Honoring my brother's legacy: "Jerry's Music For The World"
I am honored and grateful to have had the opportunity to call Jerry Olcsvary my big brother. For my 49 years on this Earth, Jerry was a source of wisdom, protection, education, entertainment, and love. He was one of my best friends. He taught me how to be a good person, and I learned many lessons on fatherhood watching him and his wife, Lisa, raise my two nieces.
Another thing Jerry bestowed upon me was a love for music. From his early days playing the clarinet in the school band to getting his first bass guitar for Christmas, learning to play complicated bass lines by ear; my memories of Jerry are full of music. Jerry was a big fan of alternative, punk, and industrial rock (along with other genres), and I grew up on hip hop. We may have gone in different directions in our musical tastes, but we occasionally introduced each other to music outside of our palates. He taught me about Portishead, The Strokes, and Rage Against the Machine while I schooled him on The Roots, Busta Rhymes, and De La Soul.
Jerry played bass in an alternative rock band in his twenties and continued to play as a source of joy throughout his life. His love of music also inspired both of his daughters, Maya and Sasha, to join their high school band. Jerry was very involved in the parent organization that assisted the band.
On September 28, 2023, Jerry passed away, and it’s been a tough time for my family and me. He was such an important figure in my daily life that it has been a huge void not being able to share jokes with him, get life advice, or just talk about our days.
Jerry was a genuine person who loved to help anyone in need. He had such a big heart and truly cared about making this planet a better place for his family and the rest of the world. After much thought, I decided the best way to honor my big brother was to do something that would help others and make a difference.
It is with a grateful heart that I am announcing the creation of “Jerry’s Music For The World.” Together with Sherry Fine, Dorothy Schwartz, and Living Water Children's Fund, my hope is to create a music program for children in need in different parts of the world. The Sherry Fine Academy is located in Tanzania, and my goal is to raise funds to obtain instruments and a music teacher for the students at the school.
I have been personally involved with The Living Water Children’s Fund for a few years as a donor, and I see the good that they do throughout the world. I appreciate the fact that all the money donated goes directly to the programs you donate to. I am hopeful that this is a program that can grow and help children in different parts of the world find the love for music that Jerry had.
Thank you in advance to all of our family, friends, and whoever else has the ability to give to this cause, make a difference, and honor Jerry's memory and love for music.
