Indy Great Pyrenees Rescue

We have been deluged with Great Pyrenees needing placement this year. The dogs without fosters stay in our boarding kennel, which in normal times is not a problem, but with the COVID 19 Pandemic, dog owners are not traveling and we have not gotten even close to the number of guests we normally get to help offset the care of the rescue dogs staying there. Currently, we have 26 dogs staying at the boarding kennel and no guests. We have 9 more dogs waiting to come into rescue.

Even though the number of our paying guests are down, we still have to have someone come in to feed them and care for the Great Pyrenees twice per day, and  still have to pay for our mortgage, and operating expenses. In addition to those expenses, the normal vet care, that goes into intaking a dog still needs to be paid for too. All dogs are spayed or neutered, heart worm and tick borne disease tested, vaccinated. They sometimes need treatment for Lyme disease, ear infections, injuries, heart worm treatment, behavior assessments, and other health issues. We provide whatever medical care is needed to help the dogs in our rescue program become healthy and adoptable dogs. Volunteer time is down too, as people are fearful of getting out due to the pandemic, and forget about the dogs in need who would so welcome someone brushing, walking them or just talking to them.

Indy Great Pyrenees Rescue, Inc. was started in 2002 and is an all volunteer based rescue with all funds generated from adoption fees and donations to help the Great Pyrenees dogs and mixed Great Pyrenees dogs in need. We have placed over 1700 dogs since we first started.IGPR is located in Indianapolis, Indiana and helps dogs from Indiana, and from surrounding states as space allows.

Tulip is a 7-8 month old Great Pyrenees mix found as stray puppy earlier this year, hiding under a large piece of equipment, in a small Indiana town. She was very scared and had not been well socialized. She spent a few months at the kennel romping and playing with other dogs and gained some confidence. She went to a foster home about a month ago with another dog to help her learn how to become a house dog. One afternoon, with her dog buddy and foster mom out in the yard, she got spooked and jumped a weak spot in the fence and escaped. Tulip stayed within a small radius of her foster home, returning to eat occassionally, but was too scared to come into the back yard. Tulip’s escape was posted on many local social media sites, and many people kept track of her in the area. Kherri Clements, of On the Run Dog Recovery, donated her time to help catch her. She set up a large trap in the foster mom’s driveway. Tulip was too leary of it to even venture in for food. Kherri tracked her paw prints in the snow and walked countless hours through wooded areas looking for her. A gate closer with a closing trigger was installed on the foster mom’s gate and she was finally trapped. She was tired, hungry, and thin, but running back and forth across a busy road caught up with her and she was hit by a vehicle at some point two days before she was caught. She would not put weight on her back leg. A trip to the veterinarian resulted in getting some pain meds to see if those and rest could help. There was little improvement. A trip to Stauffer Veterinary Surgical Center yesterday with Dr. Kent Stauffer, confirmed the worst. The damage was to her hip socket and the ball of her hip was dislodged and the blood supply to the joint was cut off resulting in necrosis of the surrounding tissue. Two options were available to help her- a total hip replacement at a cost of $5000 to $6000, or removal of the femoral head of the hip joint for $2300 to relieve the pain and give her back her mobility. If you can donate any amount towards her medical expenses, we would be very appreciative. No amount is too small! We are funded by adoption fees and donations. Mr. Happy is one of the larger of the litter of Great Pyrenees Anatolian mixes we took into rescue on August 4th. The litter of six was going to be shot by their Amish farmer owner because he no longer wanted to feed them.

Mr. Happy had a limp when he came in so we gave it a few weeks, to see if it might improve, but it has not. A trip to the Orthopedic Surgeon last  Wednesday determined he has Osteochondritis - a condition that requires surgery in order for him to not suffer from continued pain and arthritis.

He is a happy boy, hence his name, and is a big goof ball and has such a sweet and gentle temperament. His tail never stops wagging.  We have raised $994 towards the $2700 to pay for the surgery and diagnostic tests. The surgeon has been very generous in offering a 33% discount to us for the surgery.

In the mean time Happy is working on learning how to better walk on a leash. Currently he prefers the sit, "ass"ess and drag method which is hard on the handler!

Any amount of donation would be appreciated to help us raise the funds for the surgery he needs. Two of the six pups have been adopted, and one has an application on him. Happy, Henry and Diva are still in need of homes.

Matilda is a mature Great Pyrenees lady who has been in the Indy Great Pyrenees Rescue Program for two years.  (A lady never tells her age!) Although she had most likely spent her life as an outside dog,  since she smelled like a barn when we first took her in,  she now enjoys being clean, brushed and living her life as a house dog.  She spends about 15 minute outside two times a day, and that's all the time she wants out there. 

When she came into rescue, she had heartworm, and the ACLs in her legs had both been torn  long ago and never treated, and were not repairable.  Her heartworm was treated and she is cured, and she takes anti inflammatories and supplements for her arthritic rear legs and gets Autosanguinous Therapy to help keep her mobile. 

This morning she started behaving strangely.  She was would not eat her breakfast, or wet food when offered to her (She is all about wet food!)  whining, pacing, wanted out, wanted in, drank some water and vomited.  Fearing she had Gastric Torsion,  also known as bloat, we decided to take her to the emergency vet hospital.  Xrays confirmed it was indeed Gastric Torsion, an IV was started and she was rushed into surgery.  Her stomach has twisted about 270 degrees, stomach bruising was minimal, her other organs looked good.  She had her stomach unflipped and stapled to her rib cage to prevent it from happening again.  Although fer surgeon is optimistic about her recovery,  the next 48 hours will be critical. 

Please know the signs of Gastric Torsion are very minimal, and if you fear your dog has it, then the peace of mind of having them xrayed to find out is well worth the expense.  It occurs in deep chested dogs, especially Great Danes and we have seen it in all ages of Great Pyrenees.  Surgery must be done quickly if it is diagnosed, as the body starts releasing toxins into the blood stream and the tearing of blood vessels to other organs  connected to their stomach can kill them.    Do not wait a day to see if they start eating again. 

Caring for the 30+ dogs we currently have in rescue is expensive, and we need your help in paying for Matilda's surgery.  She is currently at MedVet in Indianapolis,  IN.

Jake and his littermate were rescued by a Good Samaritan in December when they were found on 2' chains on a farm with no shelter.  The farmer did not have fencing to contain them so he staked them outside of his barn, where they could not even get out of the weather.  Jake is about 10 months old and has been lame on his front right leg.  A visit to the vet confirmed he is in need of  shoulder surgery for Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD).  He has loose cartilage in his shoulder causing him pain and if not treated, will cause arthritis making him lame for life.

 Jake is the sweetest pup, who even though he is in pain, still seeks human attention and wants to be petted.  He greets you with a smile and loves attention.  He loves other animals, and will make a great addition to someone's family. 

His surgery estimate is for $3500 and we need your help in making it possible for Jake to have the surgery he needs.    No  donation amount is too small to help Jake.

Mindy is 6 year old Great Pyrenees surrendered along with two of her offspring because their owner is no longer able to keep them.  She has been bred many times, and has mammary masses that needed to be removed either from having so many pregnancies.  She also has entropian, causing her eyelids to roll in, causing the discharge around her eyes and  irritating her corneas  making calluses on them.  Her eyes constantly drain, so this needs to be surgically repaired too.  She needs spayed and chest x-rays to make sure she is a good surgical candidate.  She is in desperate in need of a groom, as she has never been groomed in her life, and smells terrible.   The one positive we can say is she is negative for heartworm. Mindy is a sweetheart who is very friendly and good  with other dogs.  She was previously a livestock guardian, but once we get her healthy, this little lady will be hoping to retire to a home with a sofa to lay on and air conditioning.

Xena is a 9 week old female Great Pyrenees puppy who was attacked  by the resident male dog over a dog bone, crushing her snout.  Her hard palate is broken along with her jaw in several places, and one of her nasal passages is injured too.  

Xena was taken to an emergency veternarian clinic, where after examining her,  it was determined that the family could not make arrangements to pay for her needed surgery, and we agreed to take her into rescue.   After discussing her situation with the  surgeon at the specialty clinic, he felt that she could have a productive life once surgery was completed being that she is so young.  

We could certainly use yoursupport, by you contributing towards her medical expenses.   Xena has won over all the staff at the clinic with her sweet demeanor and calm temperment.

We have had a inordinate amount of dogs in rescue this year needing expensive medical help, and thank you to all of you who have contributed towards their care - Moe who was shot by his owner, Leo who had osteosarcoma,  Buddy in Ohio who needed an  ACL repair,  and Heidi,  who's leg was nearly torn from her body when hit by a car.  We have also treated 10 dogs this year with heartworm,  costing about $600- $700 per dog.  We exist entirely from adoption fees and donations to care for the dogs in our rescue.  Your support is very important.
