10th Annual IGD - Support HD Research & Care
International Girlies Day ("IGD") is a holiday my friends and I created as a way to celebrate life and each other for absolutely no reason and every reason at the same time. This holiday is bigger than any birthday or bachelorette party or Bat Mitzvah one can imagine, and that is because it is SO much bigger than any one of us! IGD is a reminder of how much more enjoyable life can be when we make it about more than us—when we make it about each other.

This IGD we will be raising money for Huntington's Disease Society of America (HDSA). I personally did not know much about Huntington's Disease (HD) before learning how this disease has impacted one of our very own girlies, Aneta.

Aneta's mom Anna has been battling HD for the past few years, and Aneta's baby sister tested positive for the gene that causes HD. Huntington’s Disease is a genetic disorder that causes nerve cells in the brain to gradually stop working--affecting one's ability to move, think and function in day-to-day life. Aneta describes the past few years as a rollercoaster ride for her and her family, filled with frustration, grief, gratitude, despair, hope, acceptance, heartbreak, and DETERMINATION.

There is no effective treatment or cure--yet! In honor of our 10th Annual IGD, we've set a goal of raising $1010, with the hope of bringing us closer to the day where families like Aneta's can finally step off the HD rollercoaster.

Let's do this for Anna, Aneta and the rest of her family!!!

In Memory of Michael: Help Fight Huntington's
Michael Olateru-Olagbegi Jr., passed away on Sunday, April 27th, 2025, after a courageous battle with Huntington’s Disease. He was a beloved son, brother, friend, and a bright light in the lives of all who knew him.

Born on May 7th, 2000, Michael brought joy and energy to the world from the moment he arrived. He had a brilliant mind, a kind heart, and a unique spirit that left a lasting mark on everyone he met.

Michael cherished his early school years at Stonewall Tell Elementary and Sandtown Middle School in Atlanta, GA, later completing middle school at Nichols Middle School in Evanston, IL. He attended Evanston Township High School and graduated from Noblesville High School in Noblesville, IN. Michael proudly earned his degree from Purdue University in 2023 and was a devoted member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity at Purdue’s West Lafayette campus.

In his honor, we ask that you donate to the Huntington's Disease Society of America, in the hope that no one else has to endure this burden.

Help HD Strong Voices Fight Huntington's Disease

Huntington’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease that deteriorates an individual's psychological, physiological, and social state. Symptoms include difficulty in focusing or organizing, trouble processing thoughts and comprehending new information, and trouble with speech, swallowing, walking, posture, and balance. Other symptoms are slow or unusual eye movements, involuntary jerking movements, and muscle rigidity.

HD Strong Voices is a project that Nicolas Caraballo and Ruby Rodriguez-Valdivia developed in order to raise awareness of Huntington’s disease. Their goal is to educate as many individuals as possible about the disease, its effect on families, and increase outreach in the community. All funds from this fundraiser will go to the Huntington’s Disease Society of America, the premier non-profit organization devoted to improving the lives of those affected by Huntington's. They work with research facilities, hospitals, and community members nationwide to broaden research and increase advocacy for the disease.

We are raising money for Huntington’s disease in honor of our old college friend, Dan Propster (left in photo). Huntington’s is a horrific disease that causes degeneration of nerve cells in the brain. It has a crippling impact on one’s functional abilities and often results in severe physical, cognitive and psychiatric disorders.

Back in college, Dan was a beast of a rower, a studious chemical engineer and an active member of Phi Sigma Kappa. Post college, he went on to become a promising patent lawyer.

For those who don't know him, Dan is impossible not to like: funny, generous, loyal and caring. I can’t say I’ve met anyone with a bigger heart than his.

Crash Derby Fundraiser
To my friends and family, I am trying to raise money for something very close to my heart. On August 5th, 2023 I will be competing in the Crash Derby at Littleville Fair. I am doing this in remembrance of my uncle Marty Hutchins. Marty passed away this past December after a 20-year battle with Huntington's Disease. Huntington's is a hereditary neurological disease that directly affects my family. I have sadly lost my grandmother, (2) aunts, Marty, and one cousin so far from this disease. My goal is to help raise money to stop this. For you who did not know Marty, he drove a car pretty much like a crash derby(Don't worry he hit mostly trees and deer). He also competed in derbys at multiple fairs. He was a mechanic and truck driver by trade and loved to go watch them. I will be competing and all donations will go right to the Huntington's Disease Society of America. Please donate whatever you can. J.L Raymaakers & Sons Inc/ROAR will be matching all donations.

Hi, I am Kay Hull Phillips, RL Turner Class of 1981 President and long-time friend of Edina Welsh Sauer & Kristy Gayle Joeckel. While many of you might have heard that Edina recently passed away, you may not know that Edina suffered from Huntington's Disease, a rare and fatal genetic disorder that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain. Our beloved 1981 classmate Kristy Gayle Joeckel also suffered from HD and passed in 2016.

A GoFundMe Memorial to benefit Huntington's Disease Society of America has been created in their honor. What better way to memorialize Edina & Kristy than to be part of the solution to help find a cure and end this very vile disease? In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to HDSA. Running to Fight Huntington's Disease
Hey everyone!

I have been training for the past several months to run the Baltimore Marathon on October 15th. Running has always made me feel so good, and I like to DO some good with it too. With this run, I am looking to honor my mom and loved ones, and raise funds for a cause that has impacted my family in many ways. Huntington's Disease (HD) isn't a very well-known disease, and I am hoping to help change that.

For those who don't know--Huntington's is a progressive degeneration of brain cells, impacting a person physically and mentally over time. While symptoms can vary, some people compare it to having a combination of ALS, Parkinson's & Alzheimer's, all at once. There currently is no cure for Huntington's.

My mom, my hero and rock-star, is someone living and persevering with Huntington's. All donations to this cause will go towards the Huntington's Disease Society of America to benefit those impacted by HD and fund research initiatives.
