Code in the Schools empowers Baltimore City youth to thrive in the 21st century economy by expanding their access to computer science education. Through partnerships with school districts, community partners, and industry, Code in the Schools works to build pathways from schools to jobs and higher education for youth historically excluded from the technology sector.
Over the past decade, Code in the Schools has remained committed to diversifying the technology industry in Baltimore through eliminating barriers and inequities in computer science education. During this period, Code in the Schools has achieved the following milestones toward fulfilling its mission:
- Code in the Schools launched in April 2013 with a cohort of 20 high school students at the Digital Harbor Foundation.
- In 2015, the first cohort of the after-school Prodigy Program was launched, along with the start of Codeworks, Code in the Schools’ summer workforce development program in partnership with YouthWorks.
- CodeWorks expanded in 20216 from 10 students to 60 students through partnerships with Union Baptist Church, Betamore, and the Baltimore Robotics Center.
- Code in the Schools was named Tech Mission Organization of the Year by Technical.ly Baltimore in November of 2016.
- At Artscape 2017, Prodigy students had their games featured on the giant billboard on Charles Street.
- In 2018 Maryland Codes was finalized as the Code.Org regional partner. Additionally, Maryland passed HB281 that year, mandating Computer Science education in high schools statewide, a testament to the leadership of Code in the Schools and its supporting organizations.
- Even during the challenges posed by the pandemic, Code in the Schools continued to serve Baltimore students through virtual programs and the distribution of over 1000 devices to local families. Concurrently, Gretchen played a key role in founding the Digital Equity Coalition.
- Ahead of Code in the Schools’ 10 Year Anniversary, CITS moved into a newly renovated office in the former Odell’s Nightclub.
- After 10 years of outstanding service, Co-Founding Executive Director Gretchen LeGrand stepped down from her role and passed the torch to three new Co-Executive Directors, former COO Dianne Conley, and new team members Andrew Pham and Stephanie Alphee.
As Code in the Schools embarks on the next chapter under new leadership, the organization is excited about what accomplishments the next 10 years will bring.
