The Allegany County Animal Shelter is helping raise funds for a critical surgery for one of our shelter graduates, Huck. Huck was adopted into a loving home by two of our shelter volunteers, individuals with huge hearts who has given countless hours to the homeless pets in our shelter. Huck's surgery is very expensive, nearly $4000, but the prognosis for this sweet young boy is good, so we want to do whatever we can to help. Please read Huck's story below, as told by his mom:
In early October 2021, Animal Control received a call about a young dog who had been hit by a car. He spent the next five days at the emergency vet. He was in the process of being rehomed- for the third time in just a few months- when he was hit, but ultimately, he was surrendered to the shelter for financial reasons.
The shelter wanted him to have a soft place to land when he was discharged- and that’s when we met Huck. We had been shelter volunteers for years, ranging from walkers to foster liaison. Our other dog, Luna, gave us the thumbs up and Huck came home with us the next day.
The emergency vet had noted cataracts. Sadly, we realize that Huck’s vision is declining. He is bumping into things inside and out, in broad daylight and in the dark. We baby-proofed the house and use extra care when letting him romp outside with his sister or take walks. He saw an eye specialist in May, who delivered the sad news that Huck is completely blind in his right eye and has a cataract in his left. With surgery, he has an excellent chance of having good vision in the left eye. Without it, he will be completely blind in time.
Huck is just 15 months old now. He is the sweetest boy, despite being bounced around as a puppy, getting hit by a car, and being partially blind. He doesn’t let his disability slow him down one bit. Huck’s disposition is the perfect mix of determined puppy and complete love bug. He seems happiest when he’s touching his people and never misses an opportunity to snuggle up as closely as possible.
He is an incredibly smart dog, picking up new commands easily. He is the perfect playmate to his big sister, our first foster fail, and has really brought her out of her depression after losing her brother. He’s also been wonderful with the cats and serves as mediator when they get into scuffles. He sleeps with us every night, which we wouldn’t change for the world. His curiosity is adorable. His enthusiasm is inspiring. His determination is epic. He makes us laugh every day. We need him as much as he needs us.
We are doing everything we can to save Huck’s vision, and we appreciate any donation to keep his happy life intact.
Huck has a chance for a loving and stable life now. Can you help give him the gift of sight so that grass is always there for him to find and the sky is something he can always look up and wonder about?
