We are 50 Miles More Massachusetts. Please join our mission by helping us raise $50,000 for our upcoming march from Worcester, Massachusetts, to Smith & Wesson’s headquarters in Springfield, Massachusetts to demand that they take part in preventing gun violence .
From August 23rd to the 26th, we will begin this fifty-mile march. We march because we refuse to feel unsafe in our neighborhoods, our classrooms, our movie theaters, our restaurants and in our homes.
We are making this walk as inclusive as possible, by not charging students a fee. We will spend the funds raised on insurance, security, permits, food, transportation and supplies for the students along their 50 mile walk. Stop Handgun Violence is the fiscal sponsor for this event and will be handling all funds collected for this effort.
Background:
In March, youth activists from across Wisconsin walked 50 Miles from the Madison to Paul Ryan's hometown in Janesville, to demand that he take stronger action on gun control. Check out the video below for coverage of this. Seeing the impact of their actions, they launched the #50more in #50states campaign, calling on each of the other 49 states to host a 50 mile march.
Massachusetts is the first state to answer. For the past 4 months, youth from across Massachusetts, including activists from March For Our Lives Boston and Teens For Action Springfield have been working around the clock to plan 50 Miles More Massachusetts.
Smith & Wesson is a gun manufacturer responsible for the production and sale of the weapons using in the shootings in Parkland, Florida, San Bernardino, California, and Aurora, Colorado. The manufacturing of firearms is a multi-billion dollar industry, and this blood money continues to plague communities in Boston, in Massachusetts, and beyond. Too frequently, Smith & Wesson guns are sold legally in bordering states, and then sold illegally back into Massachusetts through the Iron Pipeline. These guns slaughter the citizens in Massachusetts, and especially people of color in urban areas like Boston, Worcester, Lawrence and Springfield. Massachusetts prides itself on progressive gun reform policies, but allows Smith & Wesson to produce illegal (in MA) weapons in our backyard.
To address the epidemic of gun violence and its intersections with economic and racial injustices, when we reach their headquarters, we will demand that Smith & Wesson invest time and money into the following:
★ Cease the manufacturing and distribution of all weapons outlawed under the 2004 Massachusetts Assault Weapons Ban including Attorney General Maura Healey’s CopyCat Weapon Enforcement.
★ Fund $5,000,000 in research to Prevent Gun Violence, as Smith & Wesson does not monitor the illegal use of their weapons, or conduct advanced research pertaining to the violence caused by their weapons. The $5,000,000 is broken down as follows:
- $1,000,000 in memory of the victims massacred in Aurora by a Smith & Wesson M&P 15;
- $1,000,000 in memory of the victims massacred in San Bernardino by a Smith & Wesson M&P 15;
- $1,000,000 in memory of the victims massacred in Parkland by a Smith & Wesson M&P 15;
- $2,000,000 in memory of the victims of countless everyday gun violence using Smith & Wesson weapons.
