2016 NYC Marathon Fund Raising

$9,136 of $5,000 goal

Raised by 66 people in 38 months
Dear Friends and Family,

I recently began training for my first New York City Marathon!

At 66 I know that this race will be both a physical and mental challenge for me, but one I am more than willing to undertake as I am running to support the charitable work of the Ridgewood Rotary Foundation.

The Foundation is a Public Charity under section 509 (a)(2) of the Internal Revenue code and is exempt from Federal Income Tax under section 501(c)(3).  This means that your donation will be tax exempt.  In addition, since the Foundation is self-administered, every dollar you donate goes directly to the programs of the Foundation.

Your support will aid local families in need of assistance…provide lifesaving heart surgery to a child from a developing country … provide clothing and medical supplies to an orphanage in Haiti … provide support for the families of our service men and women ….provide disaster relief when needed  ….help rid the world of Polio and provide scholarships to deserving students.

I believe in the work that the Foundation does and I hope that you will too.  Help make every mile that I run between now and the end of the race make a difference in someone’s life.

Please consider making a donation to this worthy cause in one of the following ways.

1.Donate online to my online fundraising page here:  https://www.gofundme.com/27vb4x8

2.Send a tax-deductible donation made out to The Ridgewood Rotary Foundation, Inc. to P.O. Box1152, Ridgewood, NJ 07450 (be sure to reference John Fowler – NYC Marathon).

3.Help me spread the word about what I am doing by mentioning it to 3 friends and ask if they would be interested in helping.

4.Many companies match their employees charitable giving.  If you decide to support me and make a donation, please ask your HR person about it and ask them to match your gift.

Thank you for considering a donation to the worthy cause.

My monthly updates have always been about how my training has progressed, how many miles I ran, my longest run and how much money had been donated to the Ridgewood Rotary Foundation. And I always ended them with the statement that “Together we are making a difference in people’s lives.”

Today I want to share with you just what that means. Because of your support of my run and the Ridgewood Rotary Foundation we were able to send immediate Financial Aid to two orphanages in Southern Haiti. Below are excerpts from two emails that we received from them.

The first is from Father Marc, the Founder of ESPWA (“HOPE’ in creole):

Sadly, the property has serious damage and the entire area faces significant destruction with a difficult recovery period ahead. Our team is working to complete a full assessment of Espwa's damage. Currently, we are aware that:
• All 20 homes in the boy’s neighborhood are damaged with roofs blown off and items in the housing such as clothing and beds ruined.
• The roofs of the 15 houses in Sitwon were torn off, too, causing interior damage from heavy rain. These were homes to many of our staff and their families.
• The secondary school and library are completely destroyed. All books, computers and furnishings will need to be replaced.
• Our agricultural sector was badly impacted by the storm with vital crops destroyed. It will take months to recuperate.
Hundreds of our neighbors have already come to us looking for shelter and food as they lost everything in the last 24 hours. We’ll do what we can, but our resources are limited.

The second is from Andy Topp, Founder of IHAF (International Humanitarian Aid Foundation:

Consolation Center that IHAF designed and helped build is reporting a similar situation, all the corrugated roofing is gone, but the containers, which are the basis of most of the buildings there, are mostly fine, a few are dented from trees falling on them and shutters are blown out of the window openings. The girls are all ok and are currently living in the community center concrete building that Eddie and Djeune Constant recently had built. But crops are destroyed, most of the trees are down or stripped bare, many of the livestock perished.
We are responding to the most urgent needs that we can help with. From reports we have, the most urgent need is food, second is clean water, third is shelter. We will be loading the IHAF Flying Mission airplane with as many high nutrition yet lightweight bars possible to help people get by until something else can be established. We are bringing Sawyer water filters, which will filter any water that they have and make it drinkable and safe. We are also bringing as many tarps as we can to help with temporary roofing and shelter.

I am happy to report that at both orphanages there were no injuries.
Thanks to your support we were able to help both of these orphanage immediately. Thank you.

I have finally reached the home stretch for both my training and fund raising efforts. The end of September marked the conclusion of my fourth month of training, leaving only five weeks until the Marathon. September ended in spectacular fashion with a 20.2 mile run, concluded in a time well within my targeted pace for the Marathon. It also was my last long training run. During the month I ran 175 miles, bring my total to 650 miles, the equivalent of 25 marathons. To date 50 people have donated $7,085 to the Ridgewood Rotary Foundation in support of my effort and more importantly the great work that the Foundation does. A special thanks to Neal Frank who made and donated Ridgewood AM Rotary running hats for the three members of the club that are running the Marathon. Once again I want to stress just how extremely grateful I am to each and every one of them and if you are one of the people who has donated, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. If you have not yet donated, please consider making your tax-deductible donation to the Ridgewood Rotary Foundation. Together we are making a difference in people’s lives.

The end of August marked the conclusion of my third month of training for the NYC Marathon. Only two more months of training before the November 6th Marathon. A trans-Atlantic voyage hindered my ability to make long runs during the month, however I was able to increase my longest run to date to 17.5 miles. The heat and humidity of late August made that run a bit of a struggle for me. I am looking forward to the cooler fall temperatures for the remaining long training runs. During the month I ran 171 miles, bring my total to 475 miles. So far 41 people have donated $5,585 to the Ridgewood Rotary Foundation in support of my effort and more importantly the great work that the Foundation does.

The end of July marked the conclusion of my second month of training for the NYC Marathon. During the month I ran 159 miles, bring my total to 304 miles. I increased my longest run to 15 miles which may seem like a lot until you realize that it is still a little bit more than 11 miles short of a full Marathon. It made me realize just how much more training I will require prior to November 6th. So far 32 people have donated $4,435 to the Ridgewood Rotary Foundation in support of my effort and more importantly the great work that the Foundation does. I am extremely grateful to each and every one of them and if you are one of the people who has donated, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. If you have not yet donated, please consider making your tax-deductible donation to the Ridgewood Rotary Foundation. Together we are making a difference in people’s lives.
