Hello all! My name is Amanda Chinyere Ichite and I am a second year Master's in Public Health (MPH) student at the University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa. At USF, in order to graduate with a concentration in Global Health Practice you must meet the international field experience (IFE) requirement. To fufill this requirement you have to spend a minimum of 8 weeks in a foreign country, volunteering with a Nongovernmental Organization (NGO) or some form of nonprofit agency. For my IFE I will be volunteering with a nonprofit organization called GoEco on their Healthcare and Community Outreach Project in Livingstone Zambia.
This project aims to provide the severely under-staffed and poorly-resourced medical clinics in Livingstone with volunteers who are eager to make a difference in peoples' lives and will give me the opportunity to be involved in many community activities. My typical weekday in Zambia will start at 7:45am and end at 5pm. Every morning I will be working on one of the healthcare projects which include assisting doctors at clinics, providing HIV education and health talks to children at schools or adults in prisons, accompanying doctors on home visits, and teaching personal health & hygiene at elderly homes. I'll have an hour lunch break at 11:45am and then, every afternoon, I will head to a different work site to work on one of the community outreach projects which include: school construction projects, farming, helping children and adults improve their literacy, helping adults find jobs, watching over children in the afterschool program, & spending time with the elderly in senior living homes.
I've been involved in numerous international service projects. This particular project is for 6 graduate credits but anyone who knows me will tell you that I am altruistic by nature. I'm a strong believer of charity begins at home, so I do what I can to positively impact the lives of people I come in contact with on a daily basis and I never hesitate to share my knowledge, skills, and experiences with others. I can't begin to explain the satisfaction I feel when I make an impact on the lives of individuals in third world countries where the things that we take for granted are the things that they pray for. Yes this is a mandatory assignment but this is what I love to do. My practice is my passion!
