Save the Al Mac's Diner sign!

In 1910, Al McDermott started with a horse drawn wagon traveling from mill to mill selling food to the millworkers during the hayday of the cotton mills. As the mills industry began changing in the 1930's he purchased a diner which he named Al Mac's Diner. In 1953, he upgraded to the current DeRaffele diner which was built in New York .
With the new building came the newly designed sign atop the diner which was made famous by the Lucinda Lewis photograph, Roadside America where the diner is flanked by classic cars including a Belair and Corvette against the night sky. Time and the New England weather have taken its toll on this icon sign. This sign has called out to many generations over the decades to come enjoy burgers, shakes and breakfast all day. Unfortunately, it has seen better days.
This sign is known around the world. It is identified around the world and has brought countless people into the diner and into Fall River.
Diners were once a common site in cities and towns in the Northeast but one by one they are closing or being move to other states to make way for other, more modern buildings and restaurants. Al Mac's Diner still serves the generations. Our customers range from newborns to 101. They consist of business people, first dates, people returning to the area, diner buffs, nostalgia lovers, families, breakfast lovers, and the "Late Night Crowd."
Today, Tuesday, May 9, 2017, the sign came down. Not because it fell down or because of its disrepair but because a new roof is being put on the diner. So while it is down, we would love to get it fixed and bring it back to its glory! The estimate to bring it back is more than we can afford since we lease the building and do not own it. But we cannot afford not to do it. This sign belongs to those in the greater Fall River area and as the current caretaker of Al Mac's Diner, I feel it is my duty and honor to make it shine in the night sky again. Now is the perfect time since the entire sign has been removed while the roof is being replaced.
