The Lotus Children's Center and Home in Accra, Ghana needs your help!
To date there has been a serious energy crisis happening in Ghana. This continues to be a big issue for the home and school. Energy prices are rising and making it difficult to keep up with the utility payments, In addition, when power outages occur and last for long periods this has lead to other expensive issues like valuable food spoiling.
To solve these problems and supply energy to the whole facility they need to get a solar energy panel. These can be quite expensive in Ghana, but they last for 18 years and the batteries for 6 years. There is already an estimate in place from a trusted contractor and some funding. But more help is needed to get the job done!
Why is this important?
I had the privilege of volunteering at Lotus from August to October of 2013. This amazing center was started to provide shelter, education, and all-round care for orphan and abandoned children in an uplifting environment. They have focused especially on looking after girls, since these are the most neglected by their families.
In addition to the children's home, the Lotus school was started in order to provide a low cost high quality education for the local children whose families are unable to afford education for their children. The government pre-schools in the area are grossly overcrowded. Their focus is on developing individuals (both children and teachers) to become creative, confident and caring members of society.
Their education is rooted in teaching student's to develop strength of character, love of learning, and a deep respect for nature and the community.
The Goal: Install the energy panel to supply energy to both school and home refridgerators, fans, lights, and the school computer.
