My name is Tammie Fields. I am the former Weekend Anchor at 10 News, WTSP-TV in the Tampa Bay area. I recently completed my graduate studies at the University of South Florida-St. Petersburg campus in Digital Journalism & Design and graduated on May 7, 2017.
As part of my final project for graduation I organized a digital multimedia campaign called the Tampa Woolworth Project to honor the courageous actions of Tampa, Florida resident Clarence Fort, Former Florida Senator Arthenia Joyner and the NAACP Youth Council with a historical marker.
As president of the youth council Fort organized and took part in the lunch counter sit-in movements along with about 40 George S. Middleton and Howard W. Blake high school students on February 29, 1960.
The Tampa Woolworth Project has spent months trying to identifying as many former members of the youth council who participated on that day. The marker includes many of their names.
Thanks to so many of you we have raised $1,300 in funds on this GoFundme site to pay for a portion of the cost for a historical marker being erected in front of Tampa's Woolworth building at 801 N. Franklin Street in Downtown Tampa.
The Hillsborough County Historical Advisory Council approved the text and photos to be used on a double sided county marker with the same text on the front and back at an initial cost of $2,340. An application was submitted on May 20, 2017 and was approved.
Since then we have incurred an extra fee from PARS International for the license agreement to use a historical photo of the lunch counter sit in that was published in the Tampa Tribune at $750. The use of 2 photos on our marker also come at an increased cost. The total cost of the marker is now $2,830.00
Hillsborough County has graciously stepped in to make $1,800 dollars available to pay for most of the remaining costs of the marker.
To commemorate the 58th Anniversary of the lunch counter sit-ins we we had a mock marker dedication ceremony on Feb. 24, 2018 at 10 a.m. at 801 N. Franklin Street in Tampa.
The permanent marker is being installed on May 19th at 10 a.m. in the same location.
