Women help immigrants in detention

My name is Carolina Rubio MacWright; I am an immigrant, mother, and an immigration attorney. With all that's happening right now in our country and at the border, I could not look away and go on with my normal life - I had to connect the dots and take action. Families need help, just as others want to lend a hand in whatever ways they can.
Some of us can offer experience, work, and knowledge - others can contribute resources. This project aims to bring all kinds of people together to help improve the situation for children and families at the border.
Within a matter of days since deciding to take action, a team of fifteen women (English-speaking lawyers, bilingual lawyers, and translators) from all over America came together to help those experiencing the crisis of family separation by volunteering at the Family Detention Center in Dilley, Texas for the week of July 22-28.
Now, we need you to join us to make this work possible.
These amazing volunteer women came together through friend networks and social media and joined forces to take action in this time of crisis at the border. Some are mothers, some are not. Most are lawyers, but some are architects, teachers, and even sales reps. The team will meet in San Antonio and drive down to Dilley, Texas, where they will all receive special training on Sunday night. The hard work begins on Monday, when we will start working 12 hour days for 5 days straight, doing work that includes listening to intense stories of war and trauma, preparing clients for asylum interviews, accompanying women and children to their asylum office interviews, and providing representation before the Immigration Judge in negative credible fear reviews and bond hearings. All of this work is incredibly important to these families in crisis, and the more support that they are given at the border, the quicker families can leave detention and be reunited. When immigrants have legal representation, their likelihood of success spikes to 85%. If mothers are bonded out of detention, they are one step closer to being reunited with their children, and their children are one step closer to living in a safe home instead of a traumatizing detention center.
One hundred percent of these funds (after GoFundMe and credit card fees) will cover travel and modest lodging expenses that will be incurred by the team for the 6 days that they will be helping immigrant families in need. If any funds remain, it will be donated to CARA, the organization that coordinates the volunteers at this Detention Center.
