Wheelchair Accessible Van for Maya

Donation protected
Meet 14 year old Maya and her loving family. Originally from Guatemala, they moved to the United States when Maya was 5 years old to seek the best medical care.  Cerebral palsy has caused Maya significant impairment of her movement including involuntary movements, floppiness and rigidity of her limbs and body. Maya is wheelchair bound and suffers from pain due to hip dysplasia and scoliosis. She is unable to produce the speech sounds for communication but Maya is bright and communicates well through the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).  She is a delight to all who know her! Anyone who spends time with Maya will experience her great determination, dry sense of humor and her awe inspiring faith.

My name is Marianne Hale, from St. Charles, IL.  Maya and her family came into my life a few years ago at the church I attend.  For the last three years we have become very close friends with Maya's parents. My best friend Carol and I have been working together to help this family in response to our  Lord's  call.  At this point it feels like we are all one big family.

Will you please consider helping Maya today?  Here’s what she needs:  After a total of 9 surgeries in her short lifetime, 3 in August for a spinal fusion, Maya and her family find themselves in urgent need of owning their own wheelchair accessible vehicle.   According to her physician it is a medical necessity for her to have a wheelchair accessible van for community access.

Maya now has several movement restrictions: she can’t bend at her hips more than 90 degrees and no twisting, bending of her spine is allowed.  Maya has no head control so a two person transfer is ALWAYS necessary; one person to hold her head and another to support her trunk and legs. These holds will keep Maya safe but are potentially unsafe for those lifting her.  The space in their current van for two people making the transfer is limited.  In short, it is an uncomfortable and unsafe situation for everyone, including Maya and the two people making the transfer.

While Maya’s father is working hard at two jobs, her mother has been her full time home caregiver. Although she is a physical therapist by education Maya’s Mom has not been able to be employed outside of the home since Maya’s birth.  Medical bills are mounting and their oldest daughter is hoping to start college in the fall. They simply can’t swing the investment of a used or new wheelchair accessible vehicle without your help.

All donations to this campaign will be deposited into a joint checking account established by Maya's mother and me. This account was opened solely for the purpose of making a purchase of a  wheelchair accessible van for Maya and her family.  Any donations big or small will be greatly appreciated as soon as you are able so we can locate a vehicle and get Maya on her way to traveling in safety and comfort for  years to come.

Thank you in advance for helping this loving and faithful family! Together we can make a difference!
