Oscar Lopez Rivera to Create Foundation for Puerto Rico’s Decolonization

Puerto Rican independence activist Oscar López Rivera was completely freed yesterday after having spent nearly 36 years in US prisons. In his first statements Lopez made it clear that he will continue his struggle and revealed that he will create a foundation of unity or the decolonization of Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rican independence activist Óscar López Rivera was released yesterday after being imprisoned in the United States more than three decades. López Rivera received the reprieve from Barack Obama last January and was soon allowed to return to Puerto Rico to serve his last three months under house arrest.

This Wednesday, at the age of 74, Lopez went to the Federal Court of the Puerto Rican capital to remove the electronic device that controlled his movement and to sign release documents.

"My spirit, dignity and my honor are much less damaged today than the day I went to prison," he said in his first statements.
The independentista leader considered that “There is sufficient love in the Boricua heart to leave behind the things that divide us and move Puerto Rico forward”.

Decolonize Puerto Rico

At the same time he expressed his desire to continue fighting for the freedom of his country: “The most important thing is unity, we are going to work, we will fight and resist until the last breath, to the independence and decolonization of Puerto Rico," exclaimed at the end of a concert held to celebrate his freedom.

López Rivera reiterated that Puerto Rico cannot continue to be colonized and that only through unity " will we empower ourselves, and make this homeland a strong homeland”.

"I feel alive and kicking and ready to embark on my new journey,” rejecting "colonialists" who, "instead of working to raise the country up, continue to promote privatization and offer incentives to Foreign investors.”

The independentista told the Metro of Puerto Rico, “We are struggling with a foundation that will seek unity within the diaspora and within the country expecting to find a common denominator, which is the decolonization of Puerto Rico” he said, adding that he will join the voices of workers and students, who are demonstrations against the decisions of the Ricardo Rosselló administration.

He asked for support of the student struggle and to sustain the University of Puerto Rico to stop the brain drain. "If we do not defend the country, if we do not defend that university, Puerto Rico will have no future," said the former member of the Puerto Rican Armed Forces of National Liberation, a clandestine independentista organization.

To close, he denied that as a member of the Puerto Rican FALN, which operated in New York and Chicago in the 1970s and 1980s, he was responsible for terrorist acts.

"I have never been a terrorist,” he said, “I spent more than 35 years imprisoned for fighting for the independence of Puerto Rico.”
