In 2016, the Village of Hesperia, Michigan, will celebrate a milestone in its history – the Sesquicentennial. The Hesperia 150 Committee, appointed in 2014 by the Hesperia Village Council, plans a model significantly different from most community anniversaries. The Hesperia 150 will feature eight themed weekends over the course of the summer, with each weekend highlighting events with a historical flavor. Kicking off over the Fourth of July, our themes focus on Main Street, Hearth and Home, Natural Resources, Sports and Recreation, Faith, Family and Military, Schools and Library, and Agriculture.
The Hesperia 150's goal is to have something for everyone, so our celebration will include not only history but also entertainment for the entire family. The Committee, in association with the Chamber of Commerce, has three objectives: to celebrate a major milestone in the life of our Village, to commemorate the men and women who built Hesperia one-hundred fifty years ago, and to invigorate a community, now struggling in a 21st century economy.
We are planning concerts and movies in the park, a 5k run, a Community Class Reunion, a picnic, a revival of our beloved Elementary School Carnival, pop-up museums, demonstrations of basket and butter making, a quilt show and bed turning, and many other events.
Some of these events will cost next to nothing to hold. Others will require money. That's where you come in.
We are holding local fund-raising events and seeking business sponsorships; with GoFundMe, we invite current area residents as well as those of you who no longer live in the area to consider helping out as well. Our goal with this campaign is modest, but the impact it will have on our celebration will be enormous.
In 1865, a man said to his son-in-law, “I know where there is a good place to start a town, on the banks of the White River where it crosses the county line.” We think Dan Weaver got it right. We hope you do too.
