Water for Sandbranch
14 miles southeast of Dallas, Texas, the 5th-richest city in America, impoverished people have NO CLEAN DRINKING WATER. America is not a 3rd-world country, and we intend to change this.
Here is how it happened. Sandbranch was founded in 1878 as a black freed slave community on land no one else wanted in the Trinity River Flood Plain. The unincorporated rural community grew to more than 500 people and flourished for more than 100 years.
Until...the city of Dallas built a state-of-the-art sewage treatment plant on their doorstep. The well water in Sandbranch, on the banks of the Trinity River, was some of the best in the county, and residents used their well water for everything. Then, when the plant opened, chemicals and bacteria from the leaching field began seeping into the water table. Today, there is no clean water to drink or bathe or do laundry in, and no water pipes to bring water into the community.
When the water went bad, everyone who could, moved away. More than a decade later, the County made an abortive attempt to relocate the remaining population, but most residents could not afford to take the offer. So the remnant of the tight-knit community remains, unable to afford anything else.
100 people live in Sandbranch today. Sandbranch is the poorest community in Dallas County. Many of them are elderly or disabled, way below the poverty line, and without transportation.
Where do they get their water from now? Volunteers for the DreamHaus project collect and distribute donated water and food most Saturdays. But never enough donated water. No city water, no sewer, no trash pickup.
In your neighborhood, in your country, the richest country in the world. Take action! to meet this most basic human need. Clean water is a human right.
