Gear for New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance
Tax deductible
Want to join me in making a difference? I'm raising money to benefit New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance (NECWA) which is an all-volunteer non-profit that is dedicated to the study and protection of marine wildlife off coastal New England. Any donation will help make an impact. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me.
This money will go towards equipment for NECWA's Southcoast Terrapin Project. Diamondback Terrapins are a species of turtle that live in coastal marshes along the Atlantic coast of the United States. They are listed as a threatened species in Massachusetts and are under the very real and immediate threat of extinction in the coming years due to habitat loss. They live most of their lives in saltmarshes and the surrounding coastal waters only coming to land to lay their eggs in undisturbed sand dunes. When trying to find a suitable nesting site, they are often forced to cross busy coastal roads and thus the species has an incredibly high road mortality rate. This is a seemingly minor issue when compared to the fact that the saltmarshes in which they reside and dunes in which they lay their eggs are disappearing at an alarming rate. Before we can properly conserve this species, we need to know how many turtles we have left and where exactly they are nesting.
Keely Ashe-Alex and I are heading a team to gauge the populations of these fascinating turtles in Pocasset on Cape Cod. NECWA has had teams working in southeastern Massachusetts for the past few years, but this is the first year that they are studying these turtles on the Cape. NECWA is very short on funds currently and have no equipment for our Pocasset team. We would need calipers, a scale, a camera, a team laptop, and PIT tags to carry out our research properly. Please help us and do your part to save these amazing animals. Feel free to message me if you have any questions about the Diamondback Terrapins, NECWA, or our work. If you can, share this post on facebook and tell your friends about our work!
Thanks again!
