Thomas Fire Relief - Tony Roberts

$5,669 of $10,000 goal

Raised by 123 people in 2 months
Created December 6, 2017

Hi Everyone,

This is the official fire relief fund for Arsen 'Tony' Roberts of Ventura, CA.

My name is Zach, and I live in a neighboring community to Tony here in East Ventura. I created this crowdfunding effort after seeing his story shared on KTLA earlier this week. His losses truly broke my heart, and I'm hoping to make a positive difference in his life after having suffered such a terrible tragedy.

Tony, 74 years old, has lived in his Ventura home since 1961. A few years ago, he retired from his local barbershop "Tony's Barbershop". Tony also lost his wife around the same time. His Ventura home, personal keepsakes, and his cats were all that he had left. Unfortunately, he lost all of them in the Thomas fire. Tony is now left with nothing, except for his truck, which he has been living in. Without close family in the area or even a cell phone it's been extremely difficult for us to find and get in touch with him. With our combined love, support, and generosity, let's show him that will always have a HOME in Ventura. ALL money raised will directly support Tony and help him rebuild his Ventura home.

Any amount of support that you can show (no matter how small) will make a big difference. THANK YOU so very much for your kindness and generosity. Please help us keep this going by sharing with others.

Thank you for your love and support. ♡

We Found Tony!!! ♡

Hi Everyone,

I am so overwhelmingly happy to be telling all of you that we have finally found Tony! After over a week of searching, I'm glad to say that he is okay. Seeing him in person for the first time has been a heartwarming experience.

I've spent the day with Tony to make sure that he has everything he needs: an ID, driver's license, cell phone, spending money, food, clothing, shelter, etc. Fortunately, an old friend of his found him sleeping in his truck in a shopping mall parking lot last week and has taken him into their home for the time being. He's reassured me that he is in good hands. A huge heartfelt "Thank You" goes out to all of you for your combined efforts, kind words, and generous offerings – I've made sure Tony knows just how many of us have been looking out for him. He couldn't find the words to express how grateful he was for all of you. He's referred to you as his "angels".

Today we were also able to visit his property - something that he has been wanting to do for days now. It was an emotional experience as you can imagine, and while we were not able to retrieve anything from the seemingly endless piles of debris, we will be back in an attempt to salvage whatever we can. We will also continue to work with local relief teams to ensure that he has everything he needs and has gone through the proper recovery channels.

PLEASE help keep this campaign going and share his story with others!!

Thank you again for everything.

Zach

Hi Everyone,

Here is the latest on where we’re currently at with Tony’s GoFundMe campaign and an update on our efforts to find him.

Last week we had a successful launch to our fundraising campaign. With your help, we’ve pulled together nearly $2k (and counting) in funding for Tony Roberts! Every bit of your support goes a long way.

Unfortunately, we have not been able to find or contact Tony. I spoke with law enforcement and they, too, have had many concerned locals reach out to them in order to ensure his comfort and safety – many of whom have generously offered food, clothing and shelter. At this point, I’ve been told that law enforcement will be asking for the Red Cross’ cooperation in finding out whether he has checked in at their Ventura County Fairgrounds shelter and go from there. I have made numerous attempts to locate Tony at the shelter myself, but to no avail. I was, however, able to leave my contact information with the Red Cross and have spoken to a couple of volunteers that are now keeping an eye out for him.

Hundreds of comments have flooded social media showing love and support for Tony, some claiming that they may have seen Tony at various posts around Ventura, but none of this information is verifiable at this point in time. I’ve handed my contact information over to the California Army National Guard with a note for Tony in the event that he visits the site of where his home once stood. Currently, the City of Ventura has only allowed escorted reentry for residents of the mandatory evacuation areas if their home is still safely standing. Gas leaks, faulty power lines, and other structural safety hazards have prohibited residents like Tony who have lost their entire home from reentry. This will change as the days progress, but at this point we are not completely certain when each phase of reentry will be rolled out to certain parts of our community.

In the meantime, I have been in contact with Tony’s neighbors (who have also lost their homes in the fire), KTLA, law enforcement, and the Red Cross. I will continue to reach out to other local organizations and individuals in the area in hopes of learning more about Tony’s whereabouts. I’ve received several questions in regards to the funds we’ve collectively raised for him – more specifically, how the money will get to him and when. I’ve worked with GoFundMe to freeze all funds until we find Tony – this means that neither myself nor any other individual than him can withdraw the funds at this time. Once we find Tony, we will give him direct access to all campaign funds by making him the sole beneficiary. The campaign will therefore remain active for the foreseeable future and donations are still accepted and encouraged.

That is all of the information that I have at this time, and I will do my best to keep all of you updated. We WILL find Tony and we WILL make sure he knows that we are looking out for him.

For those of you who are interested in a full recap of my experience in leading this campaign over the course of the past week, I’ll be rehashing the series of events in a separate update. Thank you again to everyone for your continued love and support. ♡

UPDATE:

Hi Everyone,

As the official Arsen Roberts Fire Relief Fund, we want you to be aware of potentially fraudulent GoFundMe campaigns floating around out there that we are not affiliated with. There are now 3 other relief fund pages that have popped up recently claiming to support Arsen: one from Los Angeles, another from Irvine, and a third from Porter Ranch. So far, none of these other pages have raised any funding for Arsen.

While the individuals that have set these pages up may have good intentions, we cannot verify their legitimacy. As such, we cannot endorse them. We understand that every little bit helps, but we are the ONLY page at this point in time that can guarantee that ALL funds from this campaign will be properly dispersed to Arsen Roberts. We are located in East Ventura, near Arsen’s neighborhood, and have been in close contact with his neighbors today as we continue our search for him to ensure that he knows of our efforts and is funded directly as a result.

Arsen’s story has clearly affected many of us – enough to inspire individuals from neighboring counties to pitch in – but we want to make sure Arsen’s funding is coming from a single trusted source. Concentrating efforts on a single campaign will make for a more effective end-result. Please continue to share this campaign with anyone and everyone on social media to help us keep the momentum!

We greatly appreciate your continued kindness and generosity – it truly warms our hearts and we know it will do the same for Arsen.

Thank you again, and please do not hesitate to reach out to us should you have any questions. We will do everything in our power to find Arsen as soon as possible. Be sure to stay in the loop with future updates on our campaign page or head to our sponsor’s Twitter page @805bizdev!

Kind Regards,
Zach

Quick Twitter update from earlier today. Without direct connection to Arsen and not knowing his whereabouts, it's been difficult to feel at ease about his current situation. I had to head to the Ventura County Fairgrounds evacuation shelter myself just to be sure that I could rule out the possibility of him taking refuge there. With the help of volunteers, we checked their registration log and confirmed that he in fact had not sought help there.

Seeing so many families - from small children to the elderly - displaced from their homes amongst the dozens and dozens of cots laid out for them was a sobering and saddening experience. It was a reminder of just how many have been directly affected by the fires in a matter of days. The photo posted below is capturing less than half of the building that I was standing in, right before volunteers started to shuffle around the cots to make room for more.

If anyone has any information on Arsen and his whereabouts, please contact us directly through the campaign sponsor's Twitter page @805bizdev and we will make sure he's safe and is aware of all of our combined efforts. We're confident that that's not a matter of "if" but "when". Any help that you can provide in spreading the word and sharing this with family, friends, and neighbors will be such a huge help. We'll be sure to share more updates with you as we learn more. Thank you all so much again for the continued love and support. #VenturaStrong
