UV Theater Project 2017

Hello friends --

I'm delighted to announce that The UV Theater Project is embarking on its 3rd annual site-specific/Ragdale Foundation performance!

This year we will perform Anton Chekhov's masterpiece THE CHERRY ORCHARD as a culmination of an artist residency at Ragdale, with performances on Aug. 25th and 26th.

And we need YOUR help to make it happen!

Generous contributions have made our work possible in the past, and we humbly ask if you can help make our work possible this summer.

We're conducting a 39-day fundraising campaign to complete the financing for our CHERRY ORCHARD residency/performance.  We thank you in advance for your support!  Our goal is to raise $3900 in 39 days.

$3900 by August 4th!

WHO WE ARE and HOW WE GOT HERE:

The UV Theater Project is a theater company of accomplished theater artists (most Chicago based, but some from Michigan and New York) that create unconventionally staged/presented performances of canonical plays.  We've started with our number one guy, Anton Chekhov.

Three years ago, a group of Chicago theater artists got together privately to do a reading of Anton Chekhov's UNCLE VANYA over vodka and cheese. We had so much fun we decided to have a Vanya party – inviting friends over as we read UNCLE VANYA (over Vodka and Cheese) – weaving the performance in and around them.  We found that the intimacy and informality of the performance unlocked something organic about Chekhov's work. It was exciting and fun and free.

Eventually, the Ragdale Foundation found out about our work, and awarded us their "thematic" residency for groups of artists working in collaboration. In August of 2015, we rehearsed and then performed a site-specific performance of VANYA in and around the Ragdale grounds.  The residency was so successful we were invited back the next year, and performed THE SEAGULL in the same site-specific way.

NOW:

We've been invited back by Ragdale again! This time -- THE CHERRY ORCHARD.  As ever, we'll search to find an immediate, dynamic, energized, human, and highly intimate realization of Chekhov's aching, hilarious, paradoxical, and deeply universal writing.  Performances August 25 and 26.

 WHAT'S NEW WITH US:

- The UV Theater Project is growing! We've incorporated – we are now officially a theater company! We are also expanding the rehearsal period this year by a week, and are offering our Equity actors a more substantial contract, one that allows us to invite media and potential backers to view our work.  This is all on route to eventually having a fully produced summer season.

- Part of the UV mission is to nurture promising young performers who are currently in or have just finished actor training.  Our cast will include superb young alum and student actors from both the University of Michigan, and Northwestern University, who will act side by side with renowned and seasoned theater artists.

 - The University of Michigan Office of Research has recognized the work we are doing, and has offered us a grant to keep doing that work.

This grant covers about 2/3 of our total budget for the 2017 performance and residency.

That's where you come in!

WHAT WE NEED:

We are looking to raise the $3900 of the project budget that the grant award does not cover. All of the money raised goes directly to expenses. Any money we raise above $3900 will be saved for future productions.

Pre-production officially begins August 7, the first week of rehearsal begins August 13, and our residency week August 21, with performances August 25 and 26.

There are many costs associated with the project.  Actors and the creative team must get paid.  Ragdale, while it highly subsidizes its artists, does charge a residency fee per resident.  And there are, of course, the long list of expenses – scripts, programs, props, etc – associated with any production.

With your help, we believe we can raise $3900 in 39 days!  It's our 39/3900 campaign!

We are EXTREMELY GRATEFUL for your support.  In an age of commercialism, the spirit of Chekhov thanks you too!

You can donate any dollar amount – from $1 to $1,000, or more.

Please give what you can and help breathe life into this year's residency and into a new and growing theater company, whose main goal is to create vital experiences for our audiences and ourselves.

And by all means, if you'd like, please post our link to social media, or forward to someone you think might be interested:  https://www.gofundme.com/uvtheater2017
