Uptown Tent City, a small group of local homelessness advocates need your help for the homeless people that live under the Wilson, Lawrence, and Foster Viaducts of Lake Shore Drive, and in the nearby parks along the lakefront in Chicago's Uptown Neighborhood.

These folks need tents as a short-term defense against the elements, until they can get permanent affordable housing. They also need good quality socks, personal (especially feminine) hygiene products, tarps, handwarmers, and blankets. We are estimating about 50 tent/tarp combos plus the other items.

We need funds now! Winter was late getting here, but it hit with a vengeance on Monday December 28, and the wind and sleet really tore up quite a few of the tents, soaking the few personal belongings they have, and putting them in danger of hypothermia. There are also some new arrivals that don't have tents at all.

We've spent personal money on tents and socks, helped some of them move their stuff to storage, and given rides to appointments, but our personal funds can't keep up with the needs. So we would be so grateful to be able to go to the store and buy tents and socks and mats and whatnot for our friends, to help them survive until they can get permanent affordable housing. We can't do it alone, and this is a way that YOU can help.

Friday, June 3rd, the city has another one of its destructive and abusive viaduct cleanings planned. The last one in February did over $1000 damage to the tents.

While we are hesitant to distract from fund raising abilities for the deadly cold of winter, even at this time of year, the rats and the water are very damaging to the tents, especially when moved.

Past contributions have made an amazing difference for the people experiencing homelessness at the viaducts. The tent fund is currently at zero and our tent inventory can be counted on one hand, so we are asking for a little more help reaching goal here to deal with this anticipated crisis.

Thank you very much!

UTC 'Tents for the Homeless' GoFundMe spent over $1000.00 in one day fixing the damage the city caused!

Day one we replaced about 15 tents and associated tarps. Many thanks to our donors for enabling us to be able to respond to these large scale emergencies. This weekend we will replace around 5 more tents and associated tarps. I can only imagine what the cost of 13 city vehicles and 22 city workers present at the cleaning added up to. Only about 5 workers were doing any kind of work. The city of Chicago needs to clean its own house first. When they do, maybe they will adopt a housing first model instead of the torture first model presently practiced.

Special thanks to Sandra Torres of CBS Chicago Channel 2 for a second story helping bring attention to Tents for the Homeless GoFundMe and the atrocious $15.8 million public funds giveaway for luxury housing that Alderman Cappleman and Mayor Emanuel are planning while totally ignoring freezing human beings experiencing homelessness hundreds of feet away.

With temperatures between freezing and sub-zero lately imagine what it would be like without tents, tarps and blankets. THANK YOU EVERYONE. You are saving lives and helping ease great suffering.

The need is not slowing down and we are expanding beyond Uptown. We are buying supplier inventory as fast as it is available!

Any amount you can help with, $5 or $100 or $1000, will be greatly appreciated. If you have items you would like to drop off in person or have any questions, please reach out to us on our Facebook page or website:
