Help Me Fight for Justice After a Court-Ordered C-Section

<div>On January 8, 2025, the Eaton Wildfire swept through Altadena, CA, leaving countless families devastated, including Jose Castillo and Maria Gonzalez, their two children, and their spouses. In the span of a single night, three homes belonging to this hardworking family were destroyed, along with decades of memories and dreams.

<div>Jose and Maria immigrated to the United States from Mexico 30 years ago in search of a better life. Shortly after, they bought a small, aging house in Altadena and worked tirelessly to turn it into a home full of love and possibility. As a construction worker, Jose spent countless nights and weekends repairing and improving their home. It was the house where their children, Jose and Amy, were raised, and their dreams took root.

<div>Over the years, Jose and Maria would go on to help their children build theirs too. They supported Jose (31) and Amy (28) in achieving the dream of homeownership, pitching in to repair and renovate the homes their children purchased. Amy and her husband, Fray, were just one month away from finishing the complete renovation of their first home when the fire struck. The home was set to welcome their first child and Maria and Jose’s grandchild, making the loss even more heartbreaking. Jose and his wife, Andrea, also lost their home to the fire, leaving the entire family without a place to call their own.

Help Jose and Maria's Family Recover After Eaton Fire

<div>Our family home of 22 years in Altadena has burned down and <strong>my family, Troy, Tammy, &amp; Tory Laster have literally lost EVERYTHING other than the clothes on their backs.</strong>  After mandatory evacuation, there was little time to retrieve items, leaving behind all valuables and sentimental items (some of which cannot be replaced). This wasn’t just a house; it was HOME, full of love. My stepdad Troy Laster has spent a lot of time &amp; money remodeling our home to make it comfortable for the many guests &amp; family we would welcome into our home.

My mom Tammy really nurtured the home, took pride in making sure the house was festive EVERY holiday (especially Christmas) as well as providing that warm HOME feeling for whomever walked through the door. Not to mention, so many accomplishments, plaques, medals, diplomas, degrees &amp; certificates we lived to achieve are gone now as well.

<div>On July 6th, 2024, amidst a deadly heat wave across California, we tragically lost Adrienne Boulware, affectionately known as “Twin.” Adrienne was a 47-year-old mother, grandmother, and beloved community member incarcerated at the Central California Women’s Facility (CCWF) in Chowchilla.

<div>As a recently released former prisoner, I need money for rent, utilities, food, clothing, furniture, transportation, and physical and mental health support. My family never wavered in supporting me. Since getting out, I have found my own space to live. I had a job working in a warehouse, but due to poor medical care in prison, a knee injury  limits the type of jobs I can perform. I am grateful to be going in for knee replacement surgery this week (4/23/24).

<div><strong>Imagine coming home after nearly two decades in prison. </strong>There are so many changes and challenges in adapting to this new chapter in my life. I have no savings, and every day existence has left me with pressing financial responsibilities and no real way to heal the wounds inflicted by my wrongful conviction and 18 years in prison. <div><strong>The Legal Story</strong>

<div>In 2006,  the 3-year-old son of girlfriend tragically died after falling down a flight of stairs while I was in another part of the house with my baby sister. Police and prosecutors did not believe me when I explained the accident and sought the death penalty against him. They convicted me of rape and murder in 2007 and sent me to death row. Then, in April of 2023, the prosecutors agreed that my convictions and death sentence should be overturned! After entering a plea to child endangerment and involuntary manslaughter to obtain my freedom, I was given a time-served sentence and walked out of jail on June 15, 2023.
</div>

</div>
<div>Having gone through so many twists and turns in the courts, my case is complicated. But here is a short summary. My convictions were in large part due to the testimony of a coroner who ruled the death a homicide and found rectal injuries she thought were intentionally inflicted. My appellate lawyers discovered that the coroner had not considered all of the relevant evidence. When they shared this evidence with her, she changed her official opinion. Once she saw photographs of the scene and staircase, she determined that what I said about the fall down the stairs was consistent with the injuries sustained, meaning she considered the cause of death not to be homicide. Also, after seeing medical records showing hospital staff made three unsuccessful attempts to take a temperature with a rectal thermometer – which matched up exactly with the three rectal puncture wounds she had discovered during her autopsy – she testified that these injuries were inflicted in the ER, not by my dad. Two other doctors who reviewed the records agreed that no rape occurred and the injuries were consistent with an accidental fall down the stairs.

18 Years - Innocent on Ohio's Death Row

<div>We are reaching out for your support of CRC's Black Oakland Anti-Displacement Housing Fund. The Fund will be used to assist low-income Black residents of Oakland to purchase their homes to prevent displacement.

<div>Once a home is purchased with assistance of the Fund, it will be permanently preserved as affordable housing for low-income Black Oaklanders through an affordable housing deed restriction recorded against the home that

<div>will require resale to eligible low-income purchasers.
</div>

<div>The Fund will allow assisted homebuyers to build wealth in their home but prevent real estate speculators from pricing low-income Oakland residents out of our city.
</div>

<div>The fund is designed to address situations such as that faced by <a href="https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=988268409099233" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Leslie Lewis</a>, who became a tenant in the home he was born in after his family lost ownership of the property through a predatory foreclosure. Since becoming a tenant, Mr. Lewis has had to fight 11 different eviction attempts by various speculators trying to flip the house. With assistance from the Fund and a loan from Guild Mortgage, Lewis is in the process of purchasing his life-long home.

I bought something that runs so I can move around and not be evicted by the city. It ran great for three days and guess what... the starter goes out. <div>Ahmad has many needs to re-establish his life, but he most wants to be self-sufficient. Ahmad is a Palestinian man who survived 22 years on Ohio's death row for a crime another man confessed to. He had to take a plea to a lesser offense and be sentenced to time served in order to avoid facing the possibility of a second wrongful conviction. Ahmad was deported to Jordan just before the pandemic, has struggled to find meaningful and sustaining work, and hopes now to emigrate back to North America.

<div>Ahmad Issa spent 22 years incarcerated for a crime he did not commit. Most of that time was spent on Ohio's death row. Now he is free but without many resources, and living in a country he hardly knows and hasn't been to for 30 years.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>In 2018, Ahmad's conviction and death sentence were thrown out and the state was ordered to give him a new and fair trial. As often happens in cases such as this, prosecutors threatened him with another trial and the possibility of returning to death row. This is not an uncommon practice. Prosecutors use it to keep from having admit a mistake.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>However, prosecutors gave Ahmad an option: Plead guilty to a (much) lesser offense, be sentenced to time already served, and be freed immediately. Even though the actual killer admitted to the crime and is serving a sentence of life without the possibility of parole, as a Muslim immigrant in the current atmosphere, Ahmad chose not take any chances with another Hamilton County jury.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Ahmad agreed to that offer, but because he was not a US citizen he also had to agree to be immediately deported to his home country of Jordan.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>There was one other catch:</strong> Because Ahmad agreed to plea guilty to a lesser offense, he would not be formally exonerated, and therefore he is not eligible for any compensation from the State of Ohio. Will you help Ahmad raise the start-up funds he needs to go into business for himself?

<div>Ahmad Issa now lives with his brother in Zarqa, Jordan, just outside of Amman. He continues to look for work that will sustain him, but in the era of COVID-19 he has not been successful. Ahmad knows he has what it takes to go into business for himself as an Uber driver, and he hopes to raise enough money to buy a vehicle and take care of other basic necessities of life. Please help!

Stop The Spiral: Rodrick Reed Needs Our Help

My name is Sabrina Van Tassel, I directed a documentary about Melissa Lucio called “The State of Texas Vs Melissa.” The documentary was released on HULU in 2021, and millions of people saw it. Many asked how they could help.<br /><br /> I created this GoFundMe page to support Melissa and her family members who are actively working for her freedom, and to help bring awareness to her case. Melissa and I are grateful for the many people who donated to the previous GoFundMe. We shut that page down after Melissa got her stay, nearly two years ago. We had no idea she would still be in prison nearly two years later, and that is why we have started this new page.
<br /><br /> I am in direct contact with Melissa and have been helping her for years. Only people on her visitation list can send funds to her, as required by the prison (TDCJ), and I am one of them. Melissa needs funds for hygiene items, ink for her typewriter, paper, stamps, decent food... to make her life tolerable. Writing is her only way of communicating with the outside world and she has very few visits since her family lives so far away. Remember she has mostly been alone 24 hrs a day with nearly no human contact for over 15 years! 

Now we need to start raising our voices again.<br /><br /> This fundraiser will help cover the costs of doing so. We need to help Melissa's family members continue to visit her and be active in the campaign. Cameron County is 8 hours away from the prison, so it is a long and expensive trip. <br /><br />We also want to be able to cover the costs of raising awareness and calling the public to action once again. We have local organizers who are raising awareness again right now in Cameron County, and we plan to take that effort to the rest of the world if need be. Most important, we must be ready to help Melissa resume her life in freedom when she is finally released. I believe she will soon be freed!<br /><br /> <b>BACKGROUND</b> 

In 2008, Melissa became the first Latina woman sentenced to death in Texas. From the moment of her arrest, she has steadfastly maintained her innocence. Melissa Lucio has spent over 15 years on death row for the alleged murder of her two-year-old daughter Mariah. We now know there was no murder. The film tells that story. 

Melissa's case raises many questions: no one ever saw her being violent towards any of her children, some of the kids saw Mariah fall down a flight of stairs and weren't allowed to testify at trial, her court appointed attorney willingly set aside evidence that could have dramatically changed the outcome and the District Attorney who used her case to be re-elected and was then sent to prison with a 13 year prison sentence for extortion and bribery. 

In July 2019, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals overturned her conviction and found Lucio’s right to a “complete defense” had been violated in her original trial.<br /><br /> In February 2021, a sharply divided en banc Fifth Circuit reversed the 2019 grant of relief by a vote of 10 to 7, reinstating her conviction and death sentence. Melissa’s hope for exoneration and freedom was then with the U.S. Supreme Court.<br /><br /> In November, 2021, they refused to hear the case.

On Friday January 13, 2022, Cameron County set an execution date for Melissa Lucio. Immediately, working with Death Penalty Action, I traveled with Melissa's son John and other family members all over Texas, making sure people knew that the State of Texas planned to execute an innocent woman. It was because the world was able to access her story through the film that, together with Death Penalty Action and The Innocence Project, we were able to create enough pressure that the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals halted Melissa's execution just two days before it was to happen. <br /><br />The Court ordered an evidentiary hearing to examine the evidence of Melissa's innocence, and we are all still waiting for that to happen. Melissa has been waiting nearly two years, and that is two years too long!

I am also a strong parent leader and advocate at the only Spanish immersion public school in Berkeley called Sylvia Mendez Elementary. For the last year, I have been organizing the first (of which I hope there are many) Spanish immersion trips for African American children learning Spanish. We have raised $20,000 to send 6 African American students to Costa Rica this Spring Break 2024. The trip will be monumental for these students as they will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the language and culture and create life-long memories. Our goal is that this opportunity comes available as an annual trip for students at Berkeley Unified.
