<div>Las pruebas genéticas confirmaron el mismo día que cumplió 18 años, la presencia del gen IKZF1, lo que la coloca en una categoría de alto riesgo de recaída. Por esta razón, la opción médica más segura para darle una oportunidad real de recuperación es un trasplante de médula ósea.

<div>En su proceso de tratamiento, una de las quimioterapias recibidas le generó una situación delicada de salud y se quitaron del protocolo algunas quimioterapias para evitar complicaciones, pero que ponen en riesgo el tratamiento.

<div>Mariana Ledezma Uriza, lovingly called Mari or “Cuchi,” was diagnosed in May of this year with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL).

<div>Genetic testing, performed on the very same day she turned 18, confirmed the presence of the IKZF1 gene, placing her in a high-risk category for relapse. For this reason, the safest medical option to give her a real chance at recovery is a bone marrow transplant.
</div>

<div>During her treatment, one of the chemotherapies she received caused a serious health complication, which forced doctors to remove certain drugs from her protocol in order to avoid further risks. However, this adjustment also placed her overall treatment at greater risk.
</div>

<div>In Costa Rica, bone marrow transplants are extremely limited because there is no National Bone Marrow Registry. This makes it very difficult to find compatible donors and to perform the procedure in a timely manner. Adding to this challenge, Mari is an only child.

<div>En <strong>agosto de 2022</strong>, cuando tenía <strong>34 años</strong>, Esteban fue diagnosticado con <strong>leucemia linfoblástica aguda de linfocitos B con cromosoma Philadelphia positivo</strong>, una forma muy agresiva de cáncer en la sangre. Desde ese momento, la vida de nuestra familia cambió por completo. Durante más de un año recibió quimioterapia y radioterapia en el sistema público de salud de Costa Rica, con internamientos intermitentes y un coraje inquebrantable.

<div>Tras alcanzar una remisión completa, en <strong>octubre de 2024</strong> la enfermedad regresó. En<strong> junio de 2025</strong>, se le realizó un <strong>trasplante de médula ósea</strong>, en el que tuve el honor de ser su donante. Sin embargo, lamentablemente, Esteban sufrió una recaída precoz dos meses después del trasplante.

<div>Hoy, en Costa Rica, hemos llegado al límite de las opciones médicas disponibles. Pero aún queda una esperanza: el <strong>tratamiento CAR-T</strong>, una terapia avanzada e innovadora que ha dado resultados prometedores en pacientes con leucemias como la de Esteban.

<div>Este tratamiento solo se realiza en algunos países, y uno de los centros que ya valoró su caso es el <strong>Hospital Barnaclinic+ en Barcelona, España</strong>, donde vivo actualmente. Ya tuvimos una cita virtual con el hospital, y su equipo médico ya revisó toda la documentación clínica de Esteban. Lo único que falta para iniciar es <strong>cubrir el monto inicial que permitirá comenzar los exámenes previos y dar inicio al tratamiento</strong>.

<div>Our family, friends, and even the medical staff describe him as a <strong>warrior</strong>, brave, positive, and determined. Esteban faces every challenge with admirable courage, a smile, and a spirit that brightens even the hardest days.

<div>In <strong>August 2022</strong>, at the age of 34, Esteban was diagnosed with acute <strong>lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) of B cells with the Philadelphia chromosome positive,</strong> a very aggressive form of blood cancer. From that moment, our family’s life changed completely. For more than a year, he underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy through Costa Rica’s public health system, facing repeated hospitalizations with unwavering courage.

<div>After achieving complete remission, in <strong>October 2024, the disease returned</strong>. In <strong>June 2025</strong>, he received a <strong>bone marrow transplant</strong>, and I had the honor of being his donor. Unfortunately, Esteban suffered an early relapse just two months after the transplant.

<div>Today, in Costa Rica, we’ve reached the limit of the available medical options. But there is still hope: <strong>CAR-T therapy</strong>, an advanced and innovative treatment that has shown promising results in patients with leukemias like Esteban’s.

Ayuda urgente para Esteban: tratamiento CAR-T en Barcelona

<div>Hello, my name is Germán Guerrero and I’m making this page for, my wife, Tara Guerrero (Becker) who is currently undergoing Cancer treatment. Here is her story.

<div>On 9/2 Tara went to the ER at Corewell Health/ Troy Beaumont because she had a mass growing in her right axillary(armpit)/chest wall region. The mass grew to be extremely painful prompting her ER visit. Luckily she had arrived with a mammogram, ultrasound, and CT already on record with suspicions of some type of Malignancy. On 9/3 she went through a painful CT guided biopsy of her right axilla which resulted with Berkitt’s Lymphoma (stage 4), a form of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Her PET scan shows bone and intramuscular metastasis. 9/5 she underwent 2 bone marrow biopsies because the first attempt failed. 9/10 was her first paracentesis where 6 liters of fluid was removed. This was also her first day of chemotherapy. 9/11 was her first intrathecal chemotherapy. 9/15 was the day she had a thoracentesis where 1.1L of fluid was removed. 9/12 was her second paracentesis where 2.55L of fluid was removed. 9/17 was her second intrathecal chemotherapy. 9/22 was her last chemotherapy infusion which now concludes her official first round of chemotherapy.  That day she came home to her boys. She will be going through at least 8 rounds total each with a combination of inpatient stays and outpatient appointments.

<div>Tara wanted to become a nurse after her interest in health care perked up while she watched her grandmother go through an illness and multiple hospitalizations before her passing. She has been a Registered Nurse for 12 years. Her first year of nursing was essentially unpaid aside from living stipends while serving as an RN through the Mercy Volunteer Corps (MVC). Per her own words she wanted to serve those in their most vulnerable state and maintain that mindset throughout her nursing career. She served at a free health clinic that aided individuals living below the poverty line, from all walks of life. Following, she worked on the medical surgical unit at Rush University Medical Center (her dream hospital) in Chicago for about a year. She finally made it to her dream nursing job as a circulating nurse at Troy Beaumont Hospital where she has been there for a decade this coming January. After she had Ziggy she dropped to a contingent status to raise her boys at home while working midnight weekend hours. She was able to pick up full time midnight hours (36hrs a week) with a set schedule for almost a year but due to be erroneous circumstances she was cut back down to her contingent hours. She constantly tries to be an understanding, compassionate, and advocating nurse to her patients. She can’t ever share the specifics of her patients with me, but you can absolutely tell that she has this unwavering responsibility and utmost regard for each and every patient she has ever attended to.  She’s an unforgivably compassionate, loving human being. I am lucky to call her my life partner, my wife, and an amazing mother to our sons, Oliver (11) and Ziggy (6).

<div>To say her diagnoses came as a shock to us is a complete understatement. She’s the heart of the family and the literal light of our lives. She’s been through a grueling hospital stay mentally and physically and she continues to look at each day with shinning positivity and will find at least one thing to be grateful for every single day despite her difficult road ahead.

She has taken care of her boys, myself included, and has given so much of herself to serve others in her career. Please help us take care of Tara for a change.
