- On Tuesday, January 27th, Andrew Richards - our beloved husband, dog-dad, coworker, friend, son, brother, nephew, uncle, and President of the U of M Alumni Club of Central Ohio - was involved in a very serious car accident while out of town for a work appointment. Here’s the information we have that Anna (his wife) has shared so far: He was transferred to a Trauma 1 hospital in Toledo due to the extent of his injuries, including severe fractures involving all limbs of his body as well as a head injury. To date, he has had four successful orthopedic surgeries to address his impacted limbs, plus a tracheostomy, as his need for ventilator assistance was definitely going to exceed the limit of time doctors like to keep patients intubated. A sixth surgery is expected to occur next week. It has been a slow and agonizing period of baby steps toward recovery and almost undetectable milestones of improvement (plus a few backslides fighting fevers and such). He has not regained consciousness yet, but we celebrate every small indication that he may be getting there. Once the surgeons have finished putting the pieces all together, the next step would be relocating to a Central Ohio facility closer to home for his long-term care, therapy, and rehabilitation, the extent of which is to be determined. Anna (wife) and Beckett (their dog) are doing our best to adjust to this new normal we hope is temporary and fleeting. The love and support everyone has already shown has been much appreciated. I’ve always known Andrew was amazing and the most important person in my life, but I had no idea how much he means to so many others. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
