<div>"Elaine’s husband was a proud Marine Veteran, and for 65 years, they built a life side by side. Those who knew them say they were inseparable. Two years ago, he passed away from a heart attack. Just nine months later, their son also passed, leaving Elaine to face an overwhelming loss on her own.

<div>At 86 years old, Elaine is still working a physically demanding job to survive. Despite serious health issues, including rods in her back and torn rotator cuffs, she cleans a nine-story senior living building several days a week. She lifts heavy buckets, pushes equipment down long hallways, and cleans multiple bathrooms just to make ends meet.

Each summer for the past 14 years – with the generous help of friends like you – we put together a camping trip called Washington to Washington, where we bring kids who have grown up in the city to experience the Great Outdoors. <div>Each year, with a group of amazing kids, we explore some of the country's most incredible wilderness areas. Along the way, these kids will hike up a mountain, walk through beautiful forests, swim, canoe, and fish in pristine lakes and rivers, eat new foods, ride horses, go rock climbing, watch shooting stars, make S’mores and tell ghost stories around a campfire, learn camping and wilderness skills, and basically just have fun!

We've hiked some of the tallest mountains in the Presidential Range in New Hampshire (2010); dropped by Luray Caverns and found secret swimming holes deep into the Shenandoah Valley (2011); found crawfish in the creek, tried some yoga, and hiked up Seneca Rocks in West Virginia (2012); drifted down a lazy river and explored Tracy Ridge in Allegheny National Forest (2013); completed a scavenger hunt, hit the beach, and hiked Bolar Mountain in George Washington National Forest (2014); went to a children's museum, played a pick-up game in Michigan Stadium, canoed tranquil lakes, and played in the sand around Warren Dunes in Michigan (2015); zip-lined, pet wild ponies, and trekked Mount Rogers in Virginia (2016); fished a nearby lake, rode on horseback, and hiked around Lake Sherando, Virginia (2017); spent our ride tickets at the state fair, fished a little more, competed in camp Olympics, and hiked Twin Overlook in Virginia (2018), leapt down the magnificent Sleeping Bear Dunes in Northern Michigan (2019), crafted local adventures and helped with pandemic relief (2020; 2021), hiked to the majestic Blackwater Falls (2022), and returned to summit Seneca Rocks in 2023.

<div>For this year's trip – the 15th annual – we're heading to Virginia's George Washington National Forest for a week of camping, hiking, canoeing, and much more! This year we have special adventures planned including a horseback ride up a dramatic mountain ridge and a visit with local backcountry musicians. While we won't have to dodge bears like years past, we're looking forward to seeing deer, foxes, porcupines, and even bald eagles.

<div>The trip was inspired by our friendship with D.C. native Emmanuel Durant, Jr. After his tragic death on New Year's Eve, 2009, we teamed up with Emmanuel's family to create these annual trips as a way to introduce city kids to the magic of nature, broaden perspectives, and pay tribute to Emmanuel.

<div>This year's 15th Annual Trip is also dedicated to Rayshaud Small, the son of longtime trip leader Keisha Rice, and trip leaders Angel Scroggins and Duane Little and camper Nazir Ulysse, who passed away during the Covid-19 pandemic.

<div>We have 22 wonderful, deserving kids who are excited to go on the trip this fall, but we would love to raise $18,000 by September 14th in order to make the trip happen. Thanks to some extremely generous donors, we were able to raise almost $4,000 this spring and summer to give us a head start; now, we're in the home stretch for the final $18,000. Our trips are run entirely by volunteers, so please know that 100% of your donation goes toward covering the hard costs of making the trip happen — food, gas, transportation, camping gear, special activities, etc.

On past Washington to Washington hikes, we trip leaders have seen that look of accomplishment and inspiration that fills the kids' faces when we've reached the top of a mountain. It's amazing! We always find ways to connect the triumphs the kids experience in their wilderness adventures with the goals they aim to achieve in their own lives. It's impossible to overstate just how meaningful, impactful, transformative, joyful, and special our Washington to Washington trips seem to be to these kids.

15th Annual Washington To Washington Camping Trip!

<div><strong>WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO TRULY WELCOME SOMEONE?</strong>

<div>In large parts of the world, it starts with a warm cup of chai. The word chai literally means “tea.” But culturally it means so much more. Chai symbolizes friendship, warmth, hospitality and goodwill. For family members forced -by extremists- to flee their home, to live in exile and limbo, to be separated from their loved ones, we want “chai” to be synonymous with family reunification, safety, love, and new beginnings.

<div>WE are a group of ten Ann Arbor residents who have gotten to know a resettled refugee family longing to bring two exiled family members to join them in Ann Arbor. The family has been separated for several years and those in exile remain in danger.
</div>

<div><strong>We need your help to reunite this family as quickly as possible.</strong>
</div>

<div>Thanks to WELCOME CORPS, a new program through the US State Department that facilitates private sponsorship of qualified refugees, we formed a Private Sponsorship Group called A2 CHAI. With training from WELCOME CORPS, we are eager to welcome these two newcomers and help them become self-sufficient members of our community.
</div>

<div>A2 CHAI must raise $2,425 per refugee as part of our sponsorship commitment. Therefore we need at least $4,850. As soon as we raise 60%, we can file our application and start the process of reuniting this family. All of the money raised will be used to offset the costs of addressing the refugees’ very real needs upon arrival. These include: housing, housing supplies, transportation, dental, medical, education, documentation support, etc. All funds will remain in the US; no money will be sent overseas.

Officers responded to Sonya’s 911 call for a prowler in her backyard, and shortly thereafter shot her in the face and killed her after she said, “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus." In mere moments, Sonya’s family lost a mother, a daughter and sister.

Justice for Sonya Massey

<div>On the night of Feb. 6, a computer monitor short-circuited and started a house fire at my stepson's house. We're so deeply thankful that everyone made it out safe: mom, two teen boys, and seven-month-old baby. But the damage is devastating. There's no renters' insurance or savings. The landlord already plans to sell the house, so they won't do the cleanup and repair. The family will have to relocate.

<div>Please pitch in to help this family--single mom and three boys--recover from this disaster and get on their feet in a new home. Red Cross helped some, but it will only cover the hotel bill for a week. The power's shut off at the house, and won't be checked out for at least 4 or 5 days. Then to move, they need to pay back rent, pay security deposit/first/last, pay dump fees, and replace things including a bed, mattress, bedding, dresser, clothes, and computer.

Help a Single Mom & 3 Boys Recover from a Fire

<div>Hello! My name is Daryl Longstreth and I am an educator for East Lansing Public Schools in East Lansing, Michigan. I am honored to be sponsoring this GoFundMe to support Jerolyn Keven with the costs related to completing her senior year of high school. Jerolyn came to the United States with her family in the fall of 2014 on a non-immigrant US Visa so that her father could pursue his doctoral program at Michigan State University. Jerolyn completed all of her elementary and middle school programs and most of her high school program (except for the last semester of senior year) in the States. Due to Visa requirements, Jerolyn and her family were required to return to Papua New Guinea from the United States this past fall. This resulted in Jerolyn not being able to complete her senior year in the States and also resulted in her brother, Jerome, having to delay his first year of college at California State University-Long Beach where he planned to study Business Management and Marketing.

<div>Due to Visa requirements, the family cannot return to the States until the fall of this year. Because of this, Jerolyn will have to complete her last semester of high school online through a private school (Laurel Springs High School). Private US online school is the only option available to her to complete high school outside the US. The cost of tuition, books, school materials, internet connections etc. is extremely expensive and the process of taking a loan out in Papua New Guinea makes borrowing the funds nearly impossible. The amount of time alone to get the loan could take a minimum of 4-6 months. Furthermore, due to the weak exchange rate of Kina, the local currency, the cost of Jerolyn's education, which is in US dollars, would be even higher for the family. The family even considered having Jerolyn take a year off of school and finish her last semester when they return to the States in the fall, but due to her age, she would be unable to complete school at a typical high school. Jerolyn is an exemplar student, earning mostly As throughout her school career. She is a hard worker and a dedicated learner. Her goal, once completing high school, is to attend college at either Michigan State University, Rutgers University, or California State University and study computer science and engineering. Although Jerolyn was born in Papua New Guinea, she was raised in the States, especially East Lansing, Michigan, where she really began her school career.
</div>

<div>I first met Jerolyn, her brother, Jerome, and her parents John and Adela in the fall of 2014 when they arrived in East Lansing from Papua New Guinea and enrolled in our school (Glencairn Elementary School). I was teaching 3rd grade at the time and while, age-wise, Jerome and Jerolyn should have been placed in the 5th and 4th grades, due to the difference in the school systems in Papua New Guinea and the United States, their parents felt that they would not be prepared to attend those grades. After we did some initial testing, we decided to place both students in our 3rd grade classes with the understanding that the children had several areas in math and writing where they needed significant support to even meet 3rd grade standards. John and Adela were committed to supporting their children by working at home to learn any concepts they needed to meet the objectives at school. Jerome and Jerolyn worked with tutors, including myself, outside of school that year to help bring them up to speed. Both children were extremely hard working and focused on their education, an example undoubtedly set by their parents who also hold education in high regard. By the end of the year, both children had met 3rd grade standards and were very well prepared for the rest of their schooling. This is a huge testament to the work ethic and drive of every member of this family. They are goal oriented and work together as a family unit to support one another. Despite many challenges, this family has worked so hard to pursue their dreams and they are so deserving of your support!

Help Jerolyn Keven Complete Her Senior Year of HS!

<div>Hey! Our dear friend Lisa has had a rough year. She has been hospitalized three times this year due to progressing COPD, Asthma and allergies. Thankfully she's got a great team of doctors helping her but unfortunately unpredictable flare ups have made it hard to keep a job and she's lot two jobs this year. Her COPD will continue to worsen and many things like weather, smoke, cooking fumes, COVID, dust and mold all cause flair ups which lead her to needing hospitalization again. Because of this she has made the tough decision to apply for disability.
</div>

<div>The disability process takes a <em>minimum</em> of 5 months to process. During that time Lisa has no income at all but unfortunately still has rent, bills and some out of pocket medical expenses to deal with. She needs her friends and community to help her stay afloat until her application is approved (hopefully sometime around January). She is doing all that she can to stay healthy and getting her bills paid would help keep stress down so she can focus on that.
</div>

<div>Thankfully DHS is able to help with some things but her rent and phone bill are one necessity that still needs covered. On top of that Lisa has two elderly cats and a dog who need care (two of her animals are currently on medications) and a few of her medications aren't covered by insurance.

<div>Lisa has been an amazing resource for many friends and community members. For me personally she's been a huge support with my pets, as well as just being there for me as a close friend. Help Lisa Through Her Disability Case

<p>Jazz saxophonist, landscaper, known and loved in A2 community, lost everything in a home fire Saturday morning - tools, 20 years of music, equipment, compositions, and much more. The home was completely destroyed, so he will be searching for housing, clothing for himself and his son Sebi.  
</p>

<p>Most of all,  his family is thankful that neither Dan or Sebastian were injured and they express gratitude to the AAFD for going above and beyond to rescue several of Dan’s professional saxophones.

<p>Any funds will go towards housing and belongings, winter clothing for Dan and Sebastian plus tools and equipment so Dan can work.

<p dir="ltr">Our incredible friend, Marty, was involved in a motorcycle accident today, June 8, 2017. He is currently in the ICU in an induced coma. They are monitoring the swelling on his brain.<br>
If you have met Marty, you know what an incredible man he is. He would give you the shirt off his back. He has always been there for all of us. He's an amazing person, friend, family, therapist to many of us. It's our turn to band together to be there for him. He is in need of love, prayers, and healing/positive vibes. <p>Friends &amp; Family,</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>As I complete&nbsp;the final coursework toward&nbsp;becoming a&nbsp;physical therapist, I've decided to&nbsp;put&nbsp;the pedal to the metal and see what this baby&nbsp;can do...&nbsp; </p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>This&nbsp;summer, I'm&nbsp;taking a five week trip to volunteer in a&nbsp; medical clinic in Cusco, Peru and I ask you to support me in this chance to treat children with disabilities who would otherwise have little or no access to care.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Poverty affects over 50% of the population in Peru,&nbsp;with poor economic policies and extreme inequality making life even harder for low-income families.&nbsp; Thousands of children live in complete misery with either no parents, or alcoholic ones. </p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Limited access to food&nbsp;means more than 25% of children under five are extremely malnourished.
