Our family is reaching out during a time of unexpected need. My dad, Kimo, recently underwent open heart surgery on Oahu, which has kept us away from our home in Hilo since March 1, 2026. What was supposed to be a short trip turned into a much longer stay due to his serious condition and the recent storm that cancelled flights. We are currently staying at the Ilikai Hotel, doing our best to support Kimo as he recovers, but the costs of hotel, travel, meals, and medical bills have quickly added up. Kimo has always been someone who gives selflessly to others. As a boat captain and Hawaiian Kahu, he has dedicated countless hours to organizations like The Mental Restorations Foundation, Wounded Warriors, Special needs individuals of Ohana Wa'a Laulima, and the Hawaiian Immersion Schools Nawahi and Ka Umeke Ka' eo. He often donates his time and his boat to bring joy and healing to others. Even before his surgery, he was helping with a talent show for disabled participants and offering free boat rides, never letting on how serious his own health challenges were. Now, after surgery for two aortic valves, a mitral valve, and an aneurysm in his descending aorta, we find ourselves in a position where we need help. We are grateful and humble for any support—whether it’s a donation, a prayer, or simply sharing our story. Kimo also hopes to bring more awareness to Hawaiians and local people about heart disease, so that others might be helped in the future.
