I founded <a href="https://studentloanjustice.org/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>StudentLoanJustice.org</strong></a> in 2005. I wrote the first <a href="https://www.beacon.org/The-Student-Loan-Scam-P783.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>book</strong></a> on the topic (Beacon Press, 2008). I and our group have been featured on 60 Minutes (top story), CNN, Fox News, the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Rolling Stone, Chronicle of Higher Education, The Guardian, and many, many other places. I was selected as one of 7 "financial heroes" by CNN in 2008. I created the <a href="https://change.org/cancelstudentloans" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>petition</strong></a> in 2020 that garnered 1.2 million signatures and launched the concept of cancelling student loans by executive order. My group is credited with being the inspiration behind multiple pieces of bipartisan bankruptcy legislation going back to 2005, and most recently in 2021.

My name is Jessica Fisher and I am creating this page for my brother-in-law and the whole family.  JD Fisher, age 40, was the victim of a hit and run motorcycle accident on August 16th and unfortunately lost his life.  He was a beloved son, brother, fiance’, father, uncle and cousin.  JD was a hard worker and was self employed, but did not have any life insurance.  Our family is asking for thoughts, prayers, and anything you are willing and able to assist with.  Thank you all in advance.

More than 8,000 veterans per year take their own lives.<br /><br />With those facts alone, we have work to do and we need YOUR help to do it. <br /><br />September is Suicide awareness month and although awareness is great, we need to take ACTION to stop it from happening. That’s where you and Save A Warrior come in together. <br /><br />We run what are called cohorts all around the country for active duty military, veterans, and first responders who are struggling with Post-Tramatic Stress, anxiety, depression and suicidal ideation. <br /><br />During these cohorts we bring 15 attendees together who have derived great strength to defend our country by falling in line. Upon their transition from the service, the isolation of standing out or having no line to fall in, shakes many to the core. This time of transition challenges their sense of identity; of the person they were trained to be and the warrior that they have always been. Our men and women won’t ask you for help and that’s why we are doing it for them. My time overseas was a rough combination of patrols, IEDs, and firefights. Upon returning from my first deployment I felt very different from my civilian peers. I was very jumpy and any abrupt noise would take me back. <strong>I thought about the men who were wounded and killed and day dreamed about sprinting through the fields while hearing the “SNAP CRACK!” of enemy bullets whining overhead.</strong> I kept it to myself, since I still viewed any post deployment problems as weakness. Before long, I completed Scout Sniper School and then deployed to Sangin. I was completely consumed by death and violence and although I wouldn’t admit it then, I felt an empty feeling in the pit of my stomach that never went away. I felt dead inside. After coming home and leaving the Marine Corps, my anxiety and depression became so bad that I eventually stopped attending school. I was drinking a bottle of whiskey every night just to help me sleep. When that stopped working I started using sleeping meds with the alcohol. I was ashamed of myself for being this way. Suicide was always on my mind. <strong>On a cold Friday night, I drank a bottle of whiskey, wrote my suicide letter and called the cops so they would know where to find my body.</strong> Before I was ready to take my life, a young officer showed up. I told him to turn his head away so that I could shoot myself but he wouldn’t look away. He stayed calm and talked to me. Eventually, so many police officers were there that I couldn’t bring myself to kill myself in front of so many people. This was very embarrassing. I felt like I had failed. I was forced to get help, but I was still suicidal and didn’t want to. Soon, another Marine who had a similar experienced told me about Save A Warrior. <strong>He told me about this 5-day program that would change my life.</strong> I thought it was probably some BS but he sounded like a solid guy, so I agreed to do it. I had no idea what to expect. I won’t ruin the details for you, but the next couple of days turned out to be a remarkable experience. I wasn’t completely better yet, but I had my “ah-ha” moment and I wanted to live again. <strong>The staff were amazing... they are a group of Warriors and healers that are unlike anything I have ever seen.</strong> They were mostly all returning Warriors who had been in my place at one time or another. The medical model had failed me just like it failed many others, but these guys weren’t some doctors giving me meds after seeing me for 5 minutes. <strong>These were Warriors who had been forged by the fire of combat and had persevered through their own PTS and depression.</strong> I could go on for pages about what happened during those days, but I’ll just say I learned more about myself that week than I have ever known before. <strong>Now, thanks to Save A Warrior and meditation-the greatest tool for healing-all of my anxiety is gone.” ....
