Hier haben wir in den vergangenen zehn Jahren unzählige Tango-Veranstaltungen, Seminare und internationale Events organisiert. Hier sind Freundschaften entstanden, Menschen aus vielen Ländern zusammengekommen und eine lebendige Gemeinschaft gewachsen.

Over the past ten years, we have organised countless tango events, seminars and international festivals here. Friendships have been formed, people from many countries have met, and a vibrant community has grown.

<div>This past summer we had to make an unexpected trip to the ER for a frightening unknown infection. Cristian was swelling up fast like a water balloon, and after a number of tests and hours in the ER they told us he was getting admitted to the hospital. They had him on a cocktail of IV antibiotics for 2 days and 2 nights, before letting us go. None of the doctors knew what it was, because it only partially behaved like an infection, but thankfully, Cristian got better.

<div>We never expected or wanted to be starting a go-fund-me for anything. It's especially tough to ask for help on this type of topic because we have so many more happy and exciting things we wish we could share with you and get support for instead. (We're working on building the tango community here in Richmond, Virginia - see our work at VirginiaTango.com)

<div>Because of Cristian's non-citizen status, and waiting for his green card, we didn't get his health insurance up and running until he got his Social Security number. And all this happened just before going to the hospital, so his health insurance didn't start until the following month. Since he didn't have insurance when we went to the hospital, they cut his bill in 1/2 because it started at $28,000. We still had to pay the radiology, pathology, and nursing bill separately from the big hospital bill. We are only allowed financial aid from the hospital if we lived in 1 of 4 states (NC, SC, GA, AL) and since we don't live in any of those they've been impossible to negotiate with. We've enlisted the help of multiple companies (and Resolve.com is still working away at it) but because it's Atrium Health, we're not expecting much help. They are apparently notorious for not helping patients with bills ((and that's notorious for the USA... which is notorious for putting people into medical debt.))

<div>So this Go-Fund-Me is our last resort, and we've been trying everything we can since July. The bill goes into collections on Jan 3rd, and our best bet is to sign up for a monthly payment plan just before then. With your help, we can fight this literal monster of a bill so we can focus our attention on building the tango community.

Please help us with our scary high hospital bill

<p><iframe media_type="0" media_id="6Nd25rGCcFA" class="youtube-replace" title="YouTube video player" style="margin-bottom:20px;width:560px;height:315px;" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/6Nd25rGCcFA/?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="1"></iframe><br />On March 11, tango organizers and leaders from throughout the Buenos Aires tango community met to decide what actions to take in response to the growing Covid-19 pandemic.  They concluded that, due to the great likelihood that the coronavirus would spread unchecked in tango environments, it was prudent to impose an "auto-lockdown," to shut down all activities related to tango.  It is likely that many illnesses and deaths were prevented by this action, which preceded the government lockdown by 10 days.<br /><br />By taking this unprecedented and selfless action, tango workers saved lives, but deprived themselves of their entire livelihood.  They hoped that the government of Buenos Aires would declare a state of emergency for the cultural sector generally, or the tango community specifically, and target aid to tango workers.  The organization we are raising money for<strong> Trabajadores del Tango Danza (TTD),</strong> a Buenos Aires-based nonprofit, has been advocating for such a declaration of emergency, but there has been none.<br /><br />It has been five and a half months since the tango community in Buenos Aires stopped working, and most tango workers (dancers and musicians) have received little or no financial assistance.  Some workers are lucky and have been able to monetize online activities; some tango workers have other careers to fall back on.  But some tango workers are in a desperate struggle to pay their rent and feed themselves and their families.<br /><br />TTD has been working since March to identify the tango workers, tango community members, and friends of the tango community who are in most desperate need of help.  They have been raising funds within Argentina and abroad, and using them to distribute large bags of food to individuals, couples and families.  <br /><br />The Philadelphia tango community owes so much to the Buenos Aires tango community.  So many of the great tango dance and music artists who have brought inspiration to our community over the past years either are from, or still reside in, Buenos Aires.  This fundraiser is a way for Philly tango to give back to Buenos Aires tango with love, affection and great appreciation.<br /><br />Follow Trabajadores del Tango Danza (TTD) on social media:

Launched in 2006 with the support of contemporary artist Shepard Fairey, HOPE works to help mobilize people to get involved, create, and collaborate on social issues, arts education, and community causes.<br /><br />HOPE Events is the charity that produces the HOPE (Helping Other People Everywhere) Campaign, HOPE Farmers Market, HOPE Outdoor Gallery programs, HOPE for Senegal Programs, and Hops for HOPE Annual Art &amp; Beer Show.
