What they care about

I live in the beautiful pilgrimage city of Santiago de Compostela, Spain and aim to help locals and pilgrims alike as good as I can.

Quick Pantry Update The cover/first photo of this update shows an example of what a donation of 5 Euros buys for my neighbors - A nice big repollo (cabbage) and plenty of bananas ;-) So, you see, there is nothing like a small donation, because every little helps! Cost/Donations spend for all the groceries this week: 125 Euros And if you like to help with keeping the shelves stocked, you can do so directly here on this fundraiser or via PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/EgeriaHouseSantiago Muchas Gracias from my neighbors to ALL of you for helping with keeping this little neighborhood going! All the best to you and yours, Sybille in Santiago
Groceries and in-Kind Donations Pilgrim numbers are slowly decreasing here in Santiago, so both Casa Ivar and Terra Nova Pilgrim House had a surplus of clothing, shoes and other goodies for me to pick up ;-) As you can see in the photos and the video, it was quite a lot and yes, Carrito proved once again invaluable ;-) Over the next days these shelves will be emptied by those of my neighbours that need a little bit of extra help in their lives. And I will wander down again, with Carrito, to pick up more things like clothing and shoes for them. If you can help with keeping the grocery shelves stocked, that would be a big help and frankly a load from my shoulders! You can do so directly here via this fundraiser or via PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/EgeriaHouseSantiago Cost/Donations spend (obviously for groceries only!): 110 Euros The cover photo for this update is another graffiti here in my neighbourhood of San Pedro in Santiago de Compostela. As you can see, it is not all doom and gloom here, one has just to look carefully around to find the little, hidden treasures of daily life ;-)
Pantry in between times ... I think of October and November as "in between times" here in Santiago. The pilgrim numbers are decreasing, life becomes quieter and the weather changes to wet, wetter and colder but the festive Christmas season is still many weeks away. So I thought it fitting to use, as the first photo for this update, a mural by a local artist. It shows a Galician Horreo, a traditional grain storage building, sheltering the sun from the cold rain. Heating costs money and the all so important dehumidifier needs electricity. This means it is even more difficult for some of my neighbours to make ends and needs meet during the winter months. And that is what my Little Neighbourhood Pantry is for, not to solve the big problems, but to fill the gaps and make life just a little bit more bearable for some. Cost/Donations spend this week: 120 Euros So, if it has been a while since you donated, please consider doing so if you can (if you have recently donated, please stop reading now ;-) It will help me to fill those gaps that people in my neighbourhood experience. You can do this here on this fundraiser or via PayPal https://www.paypal.me/EgeriaHouseSantiago And yes, there will be an additional fundraising "push" later in November for Advent and Christmas, you have been warned ;-) Muchas Gracias from my neighbours here in Santiago for all your support!
The pantry is still here Autumn has arrived in Santiago, the pilgrim season is winding down, and the pantry is still doing what it has been doing for 6 years: helping my neighbours here in the San Pedro barrio/neighborhood of Santiago with the groceries that keep a household (and a family!) going. Some of you have already helped again this year, and I want to say a very big Muchas Gracias. Your donations have literally turned into bags of potatoes, milk, pasta, rice, eggs, fruit, vegetables and all the other unglamorous (like cleaning supplies) but necessary things people need. Some of you haven't donated this year — and that's absolutely fine. I simply wanted to let you know that the little pantry you helped in 2025 is still going. I will be doing a special Advent/Christmas fundraiser later in November, but before then I’m making a small autumn push to keep the shelves stocked as we head towards winter. Because, heating costs money and the all so important dehumidifier needs electricity as the Galician weather gets colder and wetter by the week. This means it is even more difficult for some of my neighbours to make ends and needs meet. If you would like to help again, you can do so here via this fundraiser, via https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/EgeriaHouseSantiago or if you simply want to check out what happened at the pantry in 2026, this fundraiser https://www.gofundme.com/f/advent-christmas-and-beyond has lots of updates and photos ;-) And if you’ve already donated this year, thank you — this little pantry is still going because of people like you. Muchísimas gracias from my neighbors here in Santiago and all the best to you and yours, Sybille Yates PS Instead of a "grocery photo" I thought you might enjoy this little gem by a local artist. Now we all know what the real purpose of a horreo (traditional Galician grain storage building) is: Sheltering the sun during the rainy Galician winter ;-)
In a few days these shelves will be empty again ... But for now the pantry is ready. Muchas Gracias for all your support! Cost/Donations spend: 130 Euros If you like to help with keeping them stocked, here some ideas: PayPal (doesn't take a cut): https://www.paypal.me/EgeriaHouseSantiago You can, obviously, also donate here on this fundraiser. Sharing this post helps too ;-) All the best to you and yours from Santiago, Sybille and her neighbors
Slightly Different Pantry Updates ;-) The first photo shows an example of what one donation of 5 Euros buys for my neighbors, plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables! The next photo shows what was left from last week together with what I added with offers from my local supermarkets. The following ones show the pantry shelves fully stocked after I ordered and sorted groceries from a third supermarket. And the video shows then the "ready to go" shelves ;-) Donations spend/cost this week was 125 Euros. As these shelves will be empty again by the end of this week it would be great if you could send a donation: PayPal (doesn't take a cut): https://www.paypal.me/EgeriaHouseSantiago or simply directly via this fundraiser here. And obviously feel free to share this post, or the fundraiser itself, with your friends! All the best from Santiago de Compostela, SY
One important thing first: The pantry shelves fill and EMPTY every week. So yes, donations are always needed, no matter how small or how big. Groceries are an ongoing need, not an one-off. The photos and video show this clearly: From fully stocked beginning of the week to empty shelves after the last pick up on Sunday (yesterday). You can help by donating via Paypal https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/EgeriaHouseSantiago or here on GoFundMe Cost/donations spend: 125 Euros Muchas Gracias from my neighbours for all your support.
A bit later then usual, but you get a Pantry Photo Story I waited a bit before posting the usual update to show you how the pantry shelves look like during a typical week. The first photo shows what was left on the shelves beginning of last week, then the slow restocking, the full shelves (video) just before pick-up by the families and how the shelves looked beginning of this week aka today. If you would like to help with keeping the shelves stocked, that would be very much appreciated by my neighbors, you can donate directly here on the fundraiser or via https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/EgeriaHouseSantiago And before I forget it: Total cost/donations spend this week: 125 Euros.
