<div>Nneka Molokwu, one of the smartest, kindest, funniest people I know received devasting news that no 30-year old ever imagines: she's been diagnosed with HR+, HER2- breast cancer. After making a few jokes, her go-to coping strategy, she began a myriad of doctors' appointments and consultations. It quickly became clear to her (and her entire support system) that this is going to be a long road, with her treatment plan requiring chemo, surgeries, and radiation. <div>If you know Kathi, you know how deeply she cares about the people in her life and in the greater world, and how she uses nearly all her time, energy, intellect, and resources to help others - both personally and professionally - and to great effect. Whether it's peer reviewed articles she digs up and sends (in spades!), handmade beautiful pottery she donates for a fundraiser, a low-sugar dessert she contributes for a shower of a friend having pre-natal diabetes, or just being there to listen, Kathi always, thoughtfully and unhesitatingly, looks for how she can help.

<div>While we wish Kathi was not in a situation to be needing help herself, she is.

<div>As members of her community, you also likely know that Kathi has been contending with a breast cancer diagnosis, and related challenges, since October of 2023. While she is very fortunate to have caught the cancer early and it remains contained in the breast milk duct, her journey has not been easy. She tried a round of an experimental treatment to shrink the cancer through medication, but her body was not able to tolerate the drug, causing many challenging side effects. When it started affecting her vision, her oncologist had her stop taking it and move directly toward surgical removal of the cancer.

<div>Kathi is currently preparing for a single mastectomy surgery on June 6th, and will be incurring some significant related costs. She has chosen to work with experienced and innovative surgeons, Drs. Anne and Ziv Peled, because they are trying new approaches with nerve preservation. They have had a lot of success and Kathi has spoken with several women who had mastectomies with them and are happy with both their experience and the results. <div>Nerve preservation offers Kathi the best opportunity to be as close to her current self as possible post-surgery, but because it is a newer approach, it isn’t covered by insurance. Additional costs include items that are supportive for Kathi’s recovery such as a new, more supportive mattress, mastectomy pillows, recovery clothing to hold the drains that help move out body fluid, grocery delivery, supplements, etc. as well as her family traveling to be with her and helping to cover their stay.

<div>Kathi was very hesitant to let me set this up, but ultimately agreed because she was worried about her parents taking on too much in support of her. This gives us an opportunity to come together as her community and help share the financial burden of her journey toward health, reflecting back to her some of the incredible supportive energy she is always bringing to each of us and our shared world.

Support Kathi Schaff's Journey to Health

This campaign is organized by UNC's Entrepreneurship Center on behalf of Diana Lee.<br /><br />On April 10th, a few minutes past 10 am, there was <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2019/04/10/us/durham-explosion-north-carolina/index.html">a massive explosion</a> in downtown Durham. Kaffeinate, a beloved local coffee shop, crumbled to pieces. The owner, Kong Lee, was inside the building when it collapsed.  Minutes prior, he had called his children, Diana and Raymond, to let them know he was closing up the shop. <br /><br />Kong and his children started the coffee shop in October 2017  in order "to embrace the community by showcasing the best of what NC has to offer." Their website states,  that their family has been a part of the Triangle for over 20 years, attending school and owning businesses in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, and surrounding towns. From the warm, welcoming community to the incomparable summer nights, North Carolina quickly became the embodiment of the word "home" for them.<br /><br />Everyone who went into Kaffeinate were touched by this family's mission and passion for the community and quickly felt at "home."<br /><br />I personally know Diana Lee's beautiful heart and desire for building community from working alongside her for years to build a vocational school for homeless mothers and their children in Ghana. <br /><br />Now, Diana and Raymond need the community to support them. Kong Lee was caring for and fully supporting his elderly mother who lived in his Raleigh residence. Diana and Raymond need support to take care of their grandmother and pay for the father's funeral. <br /><br />Any amount you give means a ton to the Lee family and will be used to help them make it through the next few months.  This money will be used for living expenses like paying the mortgage of Kong's house, caring for Kong's mom, funeral expenses, and will give them time to figure out another source of income for their family until they can rebuild their coffee shop.<br /><br />Please note:<br /><a href="https://www.leefamilysupport.com">We have created a website</a>  to centralize the GoFundMe links and publicize upcoming fundraising events. Lee Family Support

Those of you who knew Luke knew what a kindhearted, fun-loving, and generous person was. Luke had an ease about him that was extraordinary—an effortless calm and grace that instantly put others at ease.  Luke was also endlessly loving and supportive of his friends and family, beloved by everyone who knew him. As Nicole put it so beautifully: "Loving Luke was the easiest, most natural thing I've ever done."<br /><br />Luke truly loved people. His favorite thing in life was connecting people—friends and colleagues alike. As a born connector, he touched the lives of tens of thousands of people. <br /><br />By now you've no doubt already heard the unthinkable news. Luke died, suddenly and unexpectedly, in the early morning hours of Tuesday, September 11th. He was only 45 years old.<br /><br />We are raising funds to help cover Luke's end-of-life expenses, including the cost of a public memorial to take place in New York in mid-October, as well as living expenses and moving costs for Nicole as she goes through this transition. Any excess funds will be donated to Luke's two favorite charities, WNYC New York Public Radio and The Natural Resources Defense Council.<br /><br />Thank you all for your love and generosity. Luke would have loved how we've all come together to support each other amid our grief and loss.

<div>Grayson Starling, one of the kindest, funniest, most open-hearted people in this world, beloved friend, son, brother and uncle, was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig's disease) at age 34. ALS is a fatal, progressive neurological condition that takes away your ability to speak, move, eat, and breathe. There is no clear disease origin and no cure. While we have hope in science pushing ALS treatments forward, there are no long term treatments available yet.

<div>Receiving this cruel diagnosis has changed his and our family's lives forever. Grayson has bravely begun to grapple with major life changes as his ALS progresses, doing so with his signature humor, surrounded by friends from all walks of life from all around the world. ALS progresses differently for every person living with it, but there is no path forward without significant changes and losses along the way.
