<div>Thank you for joining the Talbotousians in our mission and our challenge: our beloved Chapel, the Upper Room, and its relics urgently need restoration. Therefore, we are launching the “Chapel Fund” to raise €125,000 to preserve this authentic sanctuary and its priceless relics. Your contribution will ensure Talbot House can continue to fulfil its mission to inspire future generations.

<div>Talbot House is an old building - the oldest parts of the estate date from the 1750s. Not surprisingly, the building has suffered from the ravages of time. When Revd. Tubby Clayton established Talbot House in 1915, he created his Chapel in the Upper Room, the attic of the House.

<div>Tubby remembers his visitors well: “It’s beastly shaking hands with boys who come in to say “<em>Well goodbye, Padre, in case I don’t come through”, and some have such clear premonitions of death</em>.” The thousands of Talbotousians who would not make it back, led Tubby to refer to his Chapel as the Shrine of the Ypres Salient.

<div>Following the war, from 1929 onwards, the House was established as a living testimony and is still run by the non-profit Talbot House Association. Today, both the House interior and exterior are listed and regularly inspected by government agencies.
</div>
<div>In the winter of 2023, with unprecedent rainfall, water seeped through cracks in the brickwork and chimney flashing, causing significant damage to the paint and some of the textiles. Expert advice was sought and temporary repairs were carried out as soon as permission was granted from the authorities. Heritage agencies and roofers do tell us that at least part of the roof will need redoing by 2028 as a more sustainable solution. This will come at a significant cost.

<div>In September 2024, a team of dedicated volunteers, led by the Talbot House handyman, spent four weeks repainting the entire Chapel from scratch. Their exemplary work was testament to their love for the House. Although they offered free help, equipment, paint and travel expenses came at a high cost.

<div><strong>The reconstruction of textiles </strong>

<div>In this painting of the chapel from 1917 you can see beautiful red and green hangings, that surround the Chapel’s Carpenter’s Bench. These were gifted by the Bishop of Winchester, Revd. Edward Talbot. The House was founded by his son Revd. Neville Talbot and dedicated to the memory of his other son, the late Lt. Gilbert Talbot. Over time, the hangings became worn and were replaced in the 1970s with look-alikes of less quality. Only a few parts of the original hangings survive today and have been put on display in our permanent exhibition. We aim to recreate the original beauty of these hangings, as they were first seen by the soldiers over a century ago.

<div>Also visible in the painting is the altar frontal, originally blue and white, embroidered with the words Venite Adoremus Dominum (O come, let us adore him), which was also replaced in the 1970s.

<div>Thirdly, we have a banner from Ypres Cathedral, a blue and white piece with the monogram “M” for Mary. It was brought to Talbot House by the Queen’s Westminster Rifles in December 1915 and clearly visible in the 1917 painting. Fragile with age, it is carefully preserved in the archive, but we hope to create a replica to display in the Chapel once again.

<div>Next, there’s the carpet, a black and gold piece purchased in St. Omer in 1916. Hundreds of thousands have walked over it. Heavily worn, it has been thoroughly cleaned and now rests in our archives.

<div>The final piece of textile we would like to make a replica of is a purple frontal with a white cross. This was attached to the side altar during Lent.

<div>We would like to make use of the expertise of Slabbinck, a specialised firm from Bruges to make high quality replicas for all these pieces of textile. The company has an excellent reputation with clients all over the world.

<div><strong>The restoration of books</strong>
</div>
<div>Apart from the textiles, we have some very valuable books which need specialised restoration if we want to preserve them for generations to come.
</div>

<div>Firstly, there is <strong>‘The English Liturgy</strong>’, printed in 1930 under the sanction of Bishop Talbot for use in the Upper Room and blessed by him at All Hallows in 1931 in memory of his son Gilbert. Its cover and spine are heavily damaged, and loose pages need to be fixed.

<div>Secondly, ‘<strong>The Book of Remembrance and Thanksgiving’</strong> was created with exquisite calligraphy. It took 8 years to make by a team of 23 skilled calligraphists. It is both a memorial to Talbotousians who didn’t make it and a book of thanksgiving for the survivors. It contains nearly 1,000 names and was blessed by Tubby in a Ceremony at All Hallows in 1936. The parchment of this treasured piece now suffers from foxing, which causes spots. It needs careful treatment to preserve its quality.

<div>(Update: the restauration of both ‘The Book of Remembrance &amp; Thanksgiving’ and the ‘The English Liturgy’ has been paid for all ready by Mr. Gilbert Chalk, great-grandson of Bishop Talbot and volunteer at the House and also the Toc H &amp; All Hallows Trust, Tubby’s old parish on Tower Hill, in recognition of the many years of devoted service given to the Trust and Talbot House by Kenneth Prideaux-Brune).

<div>Last but not least there is what we could call our ‘masterpiece’: <strong>The Communicants’ Roll</strong>, or ‘The Red Book’. It holds the names of over 1,200 men who took communion in the Upper Room during the war. Many were killed later, as we know from Tubby’s writings, and thus it may well be that at Talbot House they put down their signature for the very last time.
</div>
<div>The book survived WW1 and the 1940 London blitz, but got heavily damaged. It has become very fragile and is in need of careful restoration. Following the advice of the Flanders Heritage Institute, we invited a specialist book restorer to write a report. The 28-page report lists more than 20 different problems. Our aim is to preserve the book, have it digitized and add the names to our online database of Talbotousians.

<div>After discussions with Peter and Michelle we would like to set up a Go fund me page to help Peter have peace of mind that when the time comes he can be rested in a place that will bring him , Michelle and Thijs comfort and for a place to visit so Michelle and Thijs can remember their wonderful husband and father . Typically on these types of groups families want to make special memories and indeed this is what the family want to do but realistically Peter is not well enough to manage trips or fulfil any bucket lists , his wishes are to spend as much family time  with his family in their home

I would like to raise money  towards a burial plot for ashes to be laid at Greenaches at Conley  woods , it’s in a lovely green burial site near a lake and is very peaceful . We would also like to raise funds for a gathering after Peter passes to celebrate his life and for us all to come together and talk about happy memories of the wonderful man Peter is , we would also like a book so friends and family can write down memories  and stories of Peter which will be a wonderful keep sake for Thijs to hear every bodies memories and stories of his kind and amazing daddy

<p>As many of you know Ryan Kinsley's van was stolen and his 3 bikes and all his equipment. This fund is to help him with the cost of repairs and replace the items stolen. If they are recovered the fund will be used as a reward to the finder or any help given towards finding them.

<strong>Replace the Harry Patch Memorial Stone</strong><br />Mid July 2018, the memorial stone bought by Harry Patch, one of the final Great War veterans, went missing. We aim to provide a copy of the stone so that Harry's story keeps on being told. <br /><br /><br />On 16 August, Harry Patch went over the top at the Steenbeek in an attack on Langemark. Later that summer, he lost three good comrades and was wounded himself by shell fire. 91 years later, aged a 110, his memories were as painful as back then.<br /><br />Having visited the site in 2007, he had mentioned the possibility of erecting a memorial to his comrades in the 7thDuke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry at the exact spot in which he had gone into action . The following year, in September 2008 , his wish was granted at a small ceremony during which he unveiled the memorial stone he had himself paid for. <br /><br />He later would visit the German cemetery in the nearby village to show his respect to his former foe as well as meet up with one of the final German veterans of the Great War. Harry became our last living link with the war in the trenches. Through his autobiography, <a href="http://www.richardvanemden.com/">The Last Fighting Tommy</a>  and the <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/guides/zpmthyc">BBC Series</a>  he reached out to future generations.<br /><br /><strong>Mid July 2018, the memorial stone was reported missing to the community of Langemark. Police were notified but no trace of the stone could be found. Hence late July, the initiative is taken by the <a href="http://www.peacevillage.be">Peace Village</a>  to crowd fund resources to replace the stone.</strong> <br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/31584776_1532510940367080_r.jpeg" alt="31584776_1532510940367080_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><br />The <a href="http://www.peacevillage.be">Peace Village Hostel</a>  in Messines not only provides group accommodation on the former battlefields but also offers education advice and activities. We frequently refer to Harry's message of peace and reconciliation in the work we do with youth groups. Through this crowd fund, we would like to do our bit to keep Harry's memory and message alive. <br /><br /><strong>The money we raise will go towards the funding of the new memorial stone. The engraving will be carried out by a local stonemason from Langemark.  The community of <a href="https://www.flandersfields.be/en/practical-info/langemark-poelkapelle">Langemark - Poelkapelle</a>  has kindly offered assistance in purchasing the stone and the installation on site.</strong> <br /><br />Any possible surplus donations will go to one of Harry's favourite charities and one of his sole good war memories, the garden of <a href="http://www.talbothouse.be">Talbot House</a>  . The Every Man's Club, run as a charity today, still offers a home from home to pilgrims who visit the battlefields. Replacing the Harry Patch Memorial

<div>According to Tubby Clayton, Edmund Street was one of the best of Talbot House’s earliest friends. Certainly, he was a great Christian, and a valiant soldier, which is why Tubby wanted his sword to rest in All Hallows. And for many years it did, in a special sword rest next to John Croke’s tomb, and the Prince of Wales’ Silver Lamp. It still rests in All Hallows stored safely in a vault, but never seeing the light of day, no longer a visible symbol of valour. And that is what this appeal is really about.

<div>It is my intention, with the co-operation of All Hallows, and Talbot House, to raise the funds required to restore the sword to its former glory. Moreover, we are looking for someone to recreate the sword rest in which it once stood.
</div>

<div> It is not clear when it was removed from the church. From the Spring of 1930 it was probably moved to the entrance of the Lady Chapel paired with that of VC winner, Sydney Woodroffe’s which stood on the opposite side (Woodroffe died at Hooge on the same day as Gilbert Talbot) . Possibly the sword was removed for protection when the Second World War broke, or maybe it was recovered from the wreckage when the church was bombed. The stand was lost and the sword ended up in a silver vault in the crypt.
</div>

<div>Now we want to restore it. The cost of getting a sword professionally refurbished is a little over £420. We also want a sum to enable the reconstruction of a metal sword stand similar to the original. I am hoping that we might find a talented soul amongst our circle of friends who could make that at cost. To allow for the raw materials and for any incidentals such as transport, I am setting the target of the GoFundMe at £800. Should we not need all of that or if we exceed the target, I will ensure all excess is split equally between All Hallows and Talbot House.

<div>Once the sword is restored, the plan is it will go to Talbot House to be displayed for long term display, after which it will return to All Hallows.
