I first met Natasha Bhalla in high school over 30 years ago. We became inseparable: sweet sixteen parties, college buddies, marriage, babies, careers. We've been through all of life’s ups and downs together. Natasha is not just my best friend—she is my little sister and soul mate. Her kindness, strength, and radiant smile have touched everyone who is privileged to know her. Through every challenge, Natasha has shown incredible resilience. Her positive attitude makes the whole world a better place. She is a fighter. And that fighting spirit has never been more challenged than now as she battles stage 4 cancer.
<br>
<br>
 After previously surviving stage 2 breast cancer, Natasha learned in 2022 that the disease had returned as stage 4 and spread to her lungs. It has since spread to her brain, and other parts of her body. Over the past year, she has endured five rounds of chemotherapy, multiple lung drains, and radiation, all while continuing to work at her job without taking time off. A few months ago, she was laid off from the job she had dedicated over 20 years to, and now her treatments have stopped working. Natasha is seeking hope through Ayurvedic cancer treatment in India, but the costs are overwhelming. The funds raised will help cover her travel to India, the Ayurvedic treatment, living expenses, medical bills, and health insurance so she can continue to fight for her life.
<br>
<br>
 Natasha’s courage and positivity inspire everyone around her, and I am asking for your support to help her continue this fight. Your generosity will give her a chance to pursue new treatment and ease the financial burden she faces. Please help keep Natasha’s light shining in this world. Thank you so much for your kindness and support.

Help Natasha Bhalla Fight Stage 4 Cancer

<div>New York Times readers this week met our friend and Columbia University classmate, the writer Jennifer Steil, through her moving essay: “Dress Rehearsal for a Wedding I’ll Never Attend,” in the Modern Love column.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>In it, Jennifer shared the story of taking her 15-year-old daughter, Theadora (aka Theo), wedding dress shopping in London — not because a wedding is imminent, but because Jennifer is battling late-stage ovarian cancer. Theo asked for this experience now, while her mother is still here, so that she will always have the memory.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>They found a dress. A luminous gown that made Theo’s eyes sparkle and her mother’s heart ache with joy and longing. But it was far beyond their means — £2,767 or about $3,800 US Dollars.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Jennifer wrote:
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong><em>“When she emerged, my eyes filled. She was radiant, a vision of youthful loveliness…. She loved the dress so much I fantasized about buying it, despite the financial impossibility. She has stopped growing, after all. Chances are it will still fit in 15 years.”</em></strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>As Jennifer’s classmates from Columbia Journalism School — and as friends who have been inspired by her words, her courage, and her love for Theo, who we've watched grow up from afar — we want to make this dream possible. This GoFundMe will cover the cost of the dress and ensure that Theo has it for the day in the future that Jennifer will likely miss.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Every contribution helps. Whether you were touched by her story as a reader or know Jennifer personally, your gift will help preserve a piece of her legacy: a dress that embodies hope, memory, and a mother’s enduring love.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Let’s help Jennifer keep this promise to her daughter.

<div>I'm based in the U.S. and am an informal representative/point person for our graduate school class. We shared Jennifer's piece via email and quickly decided we wanted to help. All funds will be sent directly to Jennifer in France via international wire transfer.

Help Jennifer Fulfill a Promise to Her Daughter

<div><em>[Please note this is NOT a fundraiser for any of the undersigned; GoFundMe language can be confusing.]</em>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>This is an appeal for donations to help a veteran journalist, in their 70s, in need of financial and medical assistance. We are a small group of concerned friends of the journalist. We have made arrangements for the funds raised to go directly to help this journalist stay out of homeless shelters and get back on their feet.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong><em>An anonymous donor, also a friend of this journalist, has agreed to match funds raised through this appeal up to $10,000. So your donation will have double its impact. </em></strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>We are keeping their identity confidential, but are willing to answer questions in private (just email <a href="https://sree.net" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">[email redacted]</a> or text +1-646-391-3526).
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>You have our personal guarantee that the money will only be used for helping this journalist. If the amount raised by this appeal exceeds the needs of this person, any excess funds will be donated to a charity to be decided at a later time. All donors will be kept appraised of the situation.

We are raising money for a journalist in need

<div>Local employees of the New York Times bureau in Kabul and their families, 127 in all, have arrived safely in Houston. Their basic needs are being met for the time being by Catholic Charities, under contract with the U.S. Government in a refugee resettlement program, with help from The Times.
</div>

<div>But to be successfully re-settled here, they have needs beyond what Catholic Charities is contracted to provide.
</div>

<div>For starters, twelve English-speaking adult members of the group who already know how to drive will need U.S. driver’s licenses. This will help them find good jobs, and to navigate life in Texas. They will have to take a short course to prepare for the test for learners' permits, and then they will need some professional instruction before they take their road tests. And they will need to use a driving school's car for the road tests, because nobody in the group has a car.
</div>

<div>So we are setting an initial fundraising goal of $8,000, which should be enough, after Go Fund Me fees, to cover their expenses for getting licenses.
</div>

<div>If we exceed the goal, money will be used to meet other needs for people in the group.
</div>

<div>Donatella Lorch and Mary Williams Walsh will audit the accounts.
</div>

<div>I will be posting reports in the Facebook group, or you can contact me directly.

Help our Afghan colleagues resettling in Houston

I'm Preet Bharara, the former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York and host of the Stay Tuned podcast. I’m hoping to aid COVID relief in India by contributing what we raise here to Indiaspora, which is doing life-saving work. The situation in India remains dire, as I discussed recently on my podcast. Here's an adapted version of what I said there: <br /><br />"For those of you who haven’t been following fully, it’s a disaster of unmitigated proportions in India after they did a pretty good job up until two months ago. The situation is really dire. The country is still reporting almost 100,000 cases a day, at least 350,000 people have died. There are thousands of deaths a day and everybody who is an expert on this kind of thing in that country says there’s a lot of undercounting. The crematoria are full. In certain cities they’re running out of wood to burn the bodies. People are just dying on the street.<br /><br />My dad, as you may know, if you listen to the show, is a doctor trained in India and he’s been talking to former colleagues and friends of his there and sadly and tragically, he lost one of his med school roommates to COVID last week. And within two days, that classmate’s wife also passed from COVID. And he and others are figuring out ways to collect money to send targeted oxygen to doctors that they know in India. So there’s a lot of work underway, and we should help that country, even as we’re starting to come out of the COVID crisis. Because as you realize, we’re all interconnected, and if we don’t solve the problem in other countries, that’s going to be a problem for Americans too.<br /><br />Indiaspora is a group of Indian leaders from around the world who have created a massive donation platform to get money to impactful nonprofits on the ground in India. I shouted them out on Stay Tuned for their remarkable work. At the end of April, they raised a million dollars in 48 hours to support families whose primary earners have lost their jobs because of the pandemic, also to help vulnerable migrant populations, and have made efforts to build makeshift hospitals."<br /><br />Please donate if you're able, and check my Twitter, @PreetBharara, for updates on our progress!

<p>We are profoundly sorry to inform you that our friend Anil Kumar Narayanan Nair from Richmond, Virginia passed away on November 10 due to a heart attack. Anil was a caring husband  of Sindhu Kumari who was 49 years old and the father of two children. Friends of Anil agreed to start a gofund  page to help cover funeral expenses that includes taking mortal remains to India.
</p>

<p>After going through the current situation , we realized there would be need of additional funds and trying to accommodate more friends have decided to increase the target fund. Any additional help to the family is to keep them away of thinking the financial aspect at this critical time period.<img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/52505350_1605189190666106_r.jpeg" alt="52505350_1605189190666106_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" />

<p>Oscar Zanoni never met a dog he didn't like. <span style="font-size:1.0625rem;">Today he was killed by a tractor trailer while riding his bike. </span>

He loved to socialize and made friends easily.  He loved Metuchen.  Most importantly, he loved Wendy and his fur babies. <br /><br />He and Wendy both have health issues but chose to handle it with smiles and kindness for others.
</p>

<p>When Oscar was 9  he survived a brain aneurysm that left him with physical and neurological impairments. He went from a coma to a vegetative state to learn how to walk and eat and talk again.  Oscar felt truly blessed that he was alive and shared that with everyone.  Due to his condition, he never drove and biked everywhere.<br /><br />I set up this fundraiser to help his wife Wendy pay for funeral, living and pet expenses.  They are a disability check family and she also has the dogs to care for.  As a community we can wrap loving arms around her at this difficult time with outreach and whatever financial support you can give. Everything matters.<br /><br />All funds raised will go directly to WENDY <br /><br />*Administered by Carla Zanoni/Family Trust Fund on Wendy's behalf, during this shocking time  <br /><br />Please take a moment and watch this you tube video of Oscar talking about his life. Oscar was truly a very inspirational,  special man who shared his story and heart freely...<br /><br />PLEASE SHARE  on your social media. Thank you for you generous donations and outreach.  <br /><br />*****There is a sweet pic of Oscar, Wendy and the pups at the very bottom of this page ****<br /><iframe media_type="0" media_id="2AuBpiu2_8w" class="youtube-replace" title="YouTube video player" style="margin-bottom:20px;width:560px;height:315px;" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/2AuBpiu2_8w/?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="1"></iframe><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/44487022_1578100279182163_r.jpeg" alt="44487022_1578100279182163_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" />

Funeral Expenses for Oscar Zanoni

My goal is to lose<strong> 20 lbs</strong>  in body weight to gain <strong>$3,500</strong>  by April 8 to benefit one of my favorite charities . I am asking you to donate <strong>$20 or more</strong> to help me reach my fundaising and health goal.<br /><br />I'm a <strong>dynamic black girl</strong> with a <strong>can do attitude,</strong> and I am asking you to support my <strong>Lose 2 Win campaign</strong> to raise funds to benefit <a href="http://www.blackgirlscode.com/" target="_blank">BLACK GIRLS CODE.</a> <br /><br />According to the National Center for Women and  Information Technology, just <strong>3 percent</strong> of the U.S. computing workforce is African-American women and <strong>1 percent</strong> is Latinas.<br /><br /><strong>"Providing young Black and Hispanic females the foundation to have successful careers in Information Technology is a fantastic start. These skills are the means to financial freedom and overall self-esteem. With these skills, these girls grow into women who can healthily contribute not just to the tech world, but to all of society."</strong><br />~<a href="http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2428084,00.asp" target="_blank">Samara Lynn, PC Magazine</a> <br /><br />Every girl I know, is engaged in a struggle to overcome gender stereotypes and barriers that can limit their ability to reach their fullest potential. <br /><br />I have a special affinity for a large segment of black and brown girls who struggle to rise above the <strong>extra weight</strong> of economic and social disadvantage and/or racial maginalization to access opportunity and resources, allowing them to become the superstars they truly are. <br /><br />I decided to <strong>tie my physical weight loss goals</strong> to my passion and desire to <strong>help black and brown girls shed the weight of low expectations</strong>. This is why I am raising money to benefit <a href="http://www.blackgirlscode.com/" target="_blank">Black Girls Code</a>  - an organization started by another dynamic black girl to provide mentors and technology skills to ebony and golden brown girls in under-served communities - positioning them to be technology leaders of the future. <br /><br /><strong>When I lose, and you donate, little black and brown girls win!</strong><br /><br /><br /><strong>ABOUT BLACK GIRLS CODE</strong><br />Black Girls CODE is devoted to showing the world that black girls can code, and do so much more. By reaching out to the community through workshops and after school programs, Black Girls CODE introduces computer coding lessons to young girls from underrepresented communities in programming languages such as Scratch or Ruby on Rails. Black Girls CODE has set out to prove to the world that girls of every color have the skills to become the programmers of tomorrow. By promoting classes and programs we hope to grow the number of women of color working in technology and give underprivileged girls a chance to become the masters of their technological worlds.
