<div>I recently had to give my 30-day notice at my current apartment (fortunately my lease was ending) because I can no longer afford the rent and was up for renewal. Thankfully, I was approved for another apartment that is significantly more affordable, in a safe place, more accessible, and would put me in a much more stable/sustainable financial position.

<div>The challenge is getting there.

<div><strong>I’m trying to raise approximately $4,000 to cover upfront costs like the security deposit, first month’s rent at the new apartment, prorated rent at my current apartment, and the other costs associated with moving into the new place.</strong>

</div>
<div><strong>And I have a deadline: I need to have the deposit and rent for the new apartment, along with the prorated rent at my current apartment, paid by September 3rd.</strong>

<div>$4,000 is a lot of money for me right now. But this move would give me something I really need right now: a more affordable home and some breathing room while I continue working to get back on my feet.

<div>Here’s how I got here.

<div>Unfortunately, my work contract was terminated in April, and since then, my full-time job has essentially been finding another job. I’ve applied for over 400 positions through LinkedIn, Indeed, ZipRecruiter, and company websites. I’ve dropped off countless résumés at local businesses, reached out directly to employers and recruiters, connected with a temp agency, and done everything I can to get my foot in the door.

<div>Through all of that, I’ve had two interviews.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Unfortunately, I had to turn one of those opportunities down because the position required more physical work than my body is capable of doing.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>That’s one of the difficult realities of my situation. I’m a quadriplegic. I am absolutely capable of working, and I want nothing more than to work and support myself and my son, but there are physical limitations I simply cannot overcome. I need to find work that I can physically perform, which means I need to work remotely and primarily on a computer. And as anyone who has searched for remote work knows, that market is incredibly competitive.

<div>But I haven’t given up.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>I’m a part-time single dad, and one of my biggest motivations is being able to provide my son with the stability and life he deserves. I want to work. I want to support myself. I want to provide for my son and give him the best life I possibly can.

</div>
<div>I’m not asking for help because I’ve given up. I’m asking because I’m trying to keep going.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Right now, I’m asking for help getting through this transition and into a home I can actually afford.

<div>I am currently receiving disability benefits; I’m grateful for that and it helps a lot, but the amount is nowhere near what could be considered a “livable” amount.

Help Me Get Into a More Affordable Home

Life has a way of opening new doors when we least expect it. As my children and I begin an exciting new chapter, we are preparing to relocate back to San Diego to be closer to family, reconnect with our roots, and build a fresh start surrounded by the people we love most.

 Before we can make that move, there are several important repairs and updates needed to prepare our home for sale. Completing these projects will help us move forward with confidence and create the best opportunity for a successful transition. Projects include repairing a driveway trip hazard, exterior house painting, HVAC repairs, carpet replacement, replacing outdated toilets, and electrical updates, including GFCI outlets and smoke detectors.

<div> My name is Lisa Troop, and I’m Tom’s older sister. I started this GoFundMe to help support Tom as he urgently fights glioma, an aggressive brain cancer discovered suddenly.

<div>In December, Tom suffered multiple seizures at work. A CT scan revealed a walnut-sized tumor in the left frontal lobe of his brain. Because it appeared to be in a good location and did not initially show characteristics of cancer, Tom and his neurosurgeon decided to try managing the seizures with medication. After being released from the hospital, Tom moved in with our mom so he could recover safely.

<div>Within a couple of weeks, it became clear something was very wrong. We rushed Tom to the ER, where scans showed swelling on his brain. He was admitted again and had surgery three days later. The neurosurgeon was able to remove about 80% of the tumor—everything he could safely remove.

<div>At first, we were hopeful, but Tom’s condition declined quickly after he was discharged. He lost his speech, became confused and nauseous, and slept most of the time. We rushed him back to the ER, where doctors found dangerously low sodium levels and significant brain swelling. That was when we received preliminary pathology results showing the tumor was a high-grade glioma that had grown rapidly in just a few weeks. This was the worst day of my life.

<div>Tom is still in the hospital, one step below the ICU, and we are hoping he can begin radiation treatment soon. He has lost much of his memory and language ability and is in daily speech therapy for aphasia. He knows what he wants to say but can’t always find the words—and if you know Tom, you know how hard that is for him.

<div>Like most of the other physically disabled kids here, Oliver goes to the one elementary school in town that is able to provide him the supports and accommodations he needs to safely go to school. It’s a place where he is lovingly cared for and educated by a staff of incredible people, who’ve become dear friends.

<div>The school itself is amazing. But there is one aspect of life there that heartbreakingly highlights the ableism that exists in our world.

<div>And that… is recess.

<div>Although this particular school houses many of wheelchair using children in the district, it doesn’t have even one piece of accessible playground equipment.
</div>

<div>I’ve watched for 4 years now as every kid in a chair sits by their (amazing) aids during recess and watches the other students play on the equipment and it breaks my heart. I don’t blame the school… it’s not a wealthy district… and the awareness around accessibility is a fairly new concept for most of society. But it IS time for change.

<div>Hi! My name is Jamie. My son Anthony - who’s friends know him as Tony the Tiger - was in a motorcycle accident in 2020 - breaking his C6 causing paralysis from his upper chest down and in his hands and triceps. With lots of help from the community he has been able to do intensive physical therapy over the last three years, and this May he was able to travel to have surgery to correct failing hardware in his neck that was creating a life-threatening situation. Now stabilized he can make greater gains in with PT, but to him more importantly he now has the opportunity to have greater involvement in adaptive sports - specifically mountain biking.

<div>This GoFundMe is to help him reach his goal of having a custom mountain bike built. And, its not just a “bike”, it's a powerful physical therapy tool that will help him regain an active lifestyle! The hand crank alone will help me build endurance and strength in his shoulders and arms. These gains and others will flow over into helping him with learning and doing things like self transfers, self propelling in a manual chair, personal care skills and other adaptive sports like surfing. Any additional funds over his goal will go to entry fees into adaptive biking races and surf competitions, and accessory equipment like helmets and specialized gloves and gear he will need.

Help Build An Adaptive Mountain Bike for Tony

<div>Picture this, last Wednesday (Sept 20), Bobby Howser was riding his bike to Cal Poly Humboldt like any other day. While gaining speed down a road that intersects with hwy 101, with a smile on his face, a car pulled out in front of him. Bobby swerved, and missed the car, but went off the road into the median and onto the asphalt. As he came too, he saw his bone sticking out of his left forearm, while his wrist was dangling below. The car didn't even know what happened and kept going. Thankfully, Bobby was able to call 911 for himself and a bystander who saw the accident ran up to check on him. Bobby was taken to St. Joseph's hospital in shock. During his 10 days in the hospital, Bobby had 3 surgeries to clean out his wound where multiple bone fragments had to be removed, a plate and 8 screws were added to support one bone, and a skin graft to close up the wound. Bobby is now at home with his buds, but will need 1, or more, surgeries to fully repair his left arm.

<div>April 22, he fractured his left ankle skateboarding, which took him out of work for multiple weeks.

<div>Aug 22, he fractured his right elbow in another road biking accident.

<div>Bobby's insurance will cover the cost of ambulance, surgeries, and PT. But, of course, Bobby will not be able to work, drive, or ride his bike. Oh yeah, his van is not running, and his bike is almost as bad off as he is. Bobby needs 4-6 months of rest and physical therapy. Not to mention at least 1 more surgery.

UH Alum Lale and Fam Affected by Maui Wildfires

Hello to everyone reading this letter. I hope that today you take a moment to spend time with the person in your life that you love so deeply; to hug them and hold their hand. That person for me is my husband of 22 years, Jason Coleman. As I type this letter to you, I sit in his room in the Neurotrauma ICU looking at him fighting to recover. Here is his story... On Thursday, June 15, Jason went to Bentonville, Arkansas to join a friend for a mountain biking trip. I had spoken with him earlier that day, he did a dual slalom race and almost won 2 out of 3 races, finishing in second place. He was having a great time doing what he has always done, riding his mountain bike with heart and soul. That was the last time I spoke with him. At 1:40 am my daughter and I were woken up by our doorbell ringing and someone banging on the door. I opened it to see two Jefferson County Sheriff's Department officers standing in front of me. They asked me to step outside as they informed me that Jason had been in a serious accident. Jason had been riding a bicycle back to his friend's house at night on a greenway he was unfamiliar with. Jason’s bicycle went off into a ditch along the side of the greenway. He was being careful and was headed home. This was a simple act turned wrong. Jason was immediately transported to a hospital in Bentonville, Arkansas. He was unconscious and unable to feel anything from his neck down. The hospital then air-lifted Jason to Cox Memorial South Hospital in Springfield, MO due to the severity of his injuries. Once he arrived at Cox South, he was admitted into the Neurotrauma ICU where MRIs were done to show where he had broken his neck. At this point, they were able to determine the injuries sustained were higher up in his cervical spine than initially expected. He was then sent into neurosurgery to have a disk removed and a metal plate put in to stabilize his neck. After the surgery was over, the neurosurgeon pulled me in a room to give me the diagnosis. Jason has a serious spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed from the shoulders down. He has severe damage to his spinal cord which is preventing messages from his brain from being sent to the rest of his body. My husband cannot breathe on his own, can't move, and can't feel his body. He has a breathing tube to keep his lungs working due to the paralysis. This man was one of the strongest men I have ever known, always taking care of himself physically and emotionally, as well as his daughter and myself. Yet, today looking at him, he can not even clear his throat to breathe with the tube inserted into him. He can't even talk to us. Sunday, June 19th Jason started to realize what was happening as the reality of it all started to hit. Jason is completely paralyzed but his mind is fully functioning. He can cognitively understand and evaluate the magnitude of this simple accident that happened on his bike. An activity he has spent his entire life doing. The anxiety started to kick in about the effect on his family, the future we have worked so hard to build, being Quadriplegic, and needing medical care for the rest of his life. In October of 2023, Jason lost his job at Penny Mac due to downsizing in the mortgage industry. He has no job or unemployment to help our family cover the costs of this new journey in life. He has no long-term benefits or money coming in to cover bills, medical costs', and future medical needs. His rehabilitation will have to be in another state to the extreme nature of his injuries. Please help Jason by sharing this Go Fund Me page with anyone and everyone willing to help him on this journey. Jason and I are asking to help raise $ 500, OOO to help cover medical needs both now and in the future. These funds will be put entirely towards years of recovery, surgeries, therapy, procedures, and rehabilitation these injuries require. <p>Our beautiful friend, sister, daughter and granddaughter, <strong>Kaitlyn McCaffery</strong>, suffered a horrific accident in Bali, Indonesia on July 31, 2021. She was in a terrible moto-scooter accident while returning home to her apartment. Two young men found her on a remote road, alone, unconscious, broken and bleeding. Without their help, she surely would have died.
</p>

<p>Kaitlyn is currently in a coma at a hospital in Denpasar, Bali. She has suffered a traumatic brain injury along with multiple other serious injuries. It has been a challenge to communicate with the hospital staff due to the immense language barrier. Kaitlyn is fighting for her life!
</p>

<p>Kaitlyn is a US citizen, having grown up and attended school at Wilcox High in Santa Clara, California and Cal State Fullerton. She graduated with a degree in business entrepreneurship and set off to travel the world. 5 years later, she has visited over 50 countries and built friendships all around the world.
</p>

<p>Due to strict Covid-19 restrictions, the Indonesian government has denied her family’s repeated requests to travel to Bali to be with Kaitlyn. Thankfully, Kaitlyn has many loving friends who are by her side in Bali and are providing the family with updates around the clock. The family is doing everything they can to get to Bali.
</p>

<p>Although Kaitlyn was smart to buy international medical insurance, the insurance company has refused to pay for the cost to evacuate her to California. The costs to evacuate her using an experienced international medevac company, such as Air Med or International SOS, are extremely daunting. Due to the distance and COVID-related border closures, it is estimated that the cost will be approx. $250,000 US Dollars. The family has found a major trauma hospital in Northern California that is able to accept and care for her.
</p>

<p>Help bring Kaitlyn home! Kaitlyn needs her family by her side. 100% of your donations will be used to assist in evacuating Kaitlyn to California and to help pay for her care.
