<div>On June 11, 2026, our family lost Matthew "Matt" Handley far too soon. His passing was completely unexpected, leaving behind his wife, Jenny, their 9-year-old son, Landon, and their 4-year-old daughter, Rylee, as they face a future no one could have imagined.

Fainting, irregular heart functions, signs of kidney trouble, critically low electrolytes and more— with no definitive diagnosis or plan of recovery yet.</strong>

<div><strong>As of a couple days ago, my mom completed a round of Vancomycin, and incredibly strong antibiotic, in an attempt to rid her of this infection. Not only has this failed, (as she found out yesterday she is still infected with C. diff.) she also learned she tested positive for a second toxin variant of the infection. This is dangerous. Her doctor has given a prescription for another antibiotic— but her pharmacy called and let her know they'd be unable to fill this and it was not reasonable as the antibiotic cost over $7,000.00. This is incredibly frustrating, as it seems my moms body did not respond to the antibiotic that her insurance covered.</strong>

<div>Despite all of the incredible challenges she's endured, she remains <strong>unequivocally good</strong>— unlike any other. For all the reasons she could be angry at the world, she spreads love instead. For the unimaginable unfairness that's unfolded before her, she'd still make sure everyones plate has something on it before her own. She's <strong><em>relentlessly</em></strong> giving. She gives her heart to her patients— to those who cannot give to themselves. She's worked long and hard hours for 30 years, to give everything she possibly can to her children and grandchildren.

<div>My mom has so much joy, light and love to continue sharing with the world— but right now she's being drained of this.

<div>In 2021, my mom checked into the ER, to be admitted for MRSA. This is a bacterial infection which can be very dangerous. Unfortunately, this would become the beginning of many visits to the ER. She overcame the infection and was discharged. We were so thankful she was ok.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>Fast forward to today— she's been in the ER at least a dozen times since January of this year (2024).

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>I'm sure many of you can sympathize, as it seems to be an infuriating inevitability that when dealing with a chronic illness, or serious health problem, it often happens to be the case that you reach <strong>more questions than you do answers. </strong>

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>My mom is now dealing with a <strong>second bacterial infection</strong>; C. diff (Clostridioides difficile). Since January of this year, my moms Potassium levels have routinely been dropping to critically low levels. This has caused my mom to become dizzy, light-headed, lethargic and daily fainting. After an infusion to get her levels back up, there were times she'd feel ok for a month, 3-6 weeks or so. As of now, her condition seems to be worsening. A week after her latest trip to the ER, turned hospital admission for 5 days, she returned home, anticipating a month or so before her routine decline. Instead, she felt her body declining in just a week. Her levels are dropping quicker each time, and to more critical levels.

<div>Recently, when her levels were the lowest they've ever been— I was driving her to the ER. We were stopped at the red light on Broadway Street, headed for Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa. There was a train— so I was waiting. As I was waiting, I look over and my moms body was jerking and twitching, her eyes closed. It looked to be a seizure. I grabbed her hand and was trying to talk to her, but she wasn't conscious, she wasn't responding to me. I was shaking her leg, trying to keep her with me, trying to let her know we were almost there, pleading that she be ok for just a few more minutes. This was terrifying— I felt I was going to lose my mom right there in the car, on our way to the ER. I felt there was no "just a minute" left. I felt in a matter of moments, there could be a million moments to come where I'd regret not having taken her to the ER sooner.

<div>When she arrives at the ER now, they know her— they recognize her and know it's likely a Potassium infusion that's needed. Apart from this, there are no further answers they can provide her. She's had every test, every assessment, multiple procedures to try to find out why this is happening. She sees her primary doctor, gets various lab testing often and still, nobody seems to be digging deep enough into why my moms body seems it cannot sustain itself.

<div>This is potentially causing irreparable damage to my moms heart, kidney, immune system and other vital bodily functions.

</div>

<div>I don't want to lose my mom— my siblings and I spend most of our time, most of our days in worry. In frustration.

<div>My mom has fought hard. Harder than anyone deserves to. She has overcome much pain and suffering. She deserves a chance at health and a return to joy. She deserves answers and stability.

<div>My mom has always loved butterflies, Monarch butterflies were her favorite. It's one of my first memories of her that I can visualize in my mind. She had this beautiful vintage book; full of every species of butterfly. From a young age, butterflies have felt like a special kind of magic that my mom and I shared. Each year we'd tell each other "I saw my first Monarch of the year today!". A moment of gratitude for things yet to come.

Support Auli'i's Fight for Health and Stability

Noah Heick is an 8th grader at West Branch Middle School in West Branch, Iowa. In February 2023, Noah was diagnosed with left ventricular hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a serious heart condition that has rapidly worsened over the past year. Once an active football player, Noah now struggles to breathe with even the slightest exertion. After extensive evaluation at the Cleveland Clinic, doctors determined that Noah needs surgery within the next 30 days to remove a mass from the septal ventricle area of his heart and repair his mitral valve. The surgery will require a lengthy hospital stay, including time in the ICU and a cardiac monitoring unit, followed by at least two weeks in Cleveland for recovery before he can return home to Iowa for rehabilitation.

 Noah’s mom, Leah, will be by his side every step of the way. The family faces significant expenses, including flights to and from Cleveland, hotel stays, meals, and other incidentals during their month-long stay away from home. In addition, Leah will need to pay her medical insurance premiums out of pocket while she is unable to work during Noah’s recovery. These costs add up quickly and create a heavy burden during an already stressful time.

Luke has been diagnosed with Stage 3 Colon Cancer, due to (only!) 1 of 19 lymph nodes removed that came back positive for cancer. We are incredibly grateful to his surgeon, Dr. Rogers at Iowa Clinic, for being so thorough during the surgery. Luckily with his initial CT Scan, there were no findings in/on his lungs or other organs that colon cancer commonly progresses to.

<div>For very basic reference: Stage 1 inside wall, Stage 2 through the wall, Stage 3 spreading to lymph nodes, Stage 4 is spreading to organs.

<div>On February 16th Luke Rauch was diagnosed with colon cancer. The C word is something no one ever wants to hear let alone when you’re only 36 yrs old. Luke will undergo surgery to remove the mass on Wednesday March 1st. Results of the tests sent to pathology will show what stage the cancer is in and what treatment will follow to fight this. Luke and his wife Angela just welcomed a beautiful baby boy named Kai in December. So Angela will be taking care of a newborn and Luke therefore they need all the support they can get. Without either of them being able to work it’s going to strap them financially. Anything anyone can do to help is greatly appreciated.

<div>I met Susanne Tolbert more than 6 years ago. We were both driving for Lyft. With countless hours of conversations while being in the queue at the airport, it didn't take long for me to determine this woman would be a friend for the rest of my life. I had no idea just how important she would become in my world, or how much I would come to respect her. We aren't two women that look like we go together: me, the frumpy, soccer grandma, and her the tattooed, free-spirit spitfire (though Susanne is a mom and grandma too). But here we are, all these years later, and you can bet I'd gladly go to battle with her at my side.
</div>

<div>And a battle is where we find ourselves today, except it's not my battle, it's Susanne's. And she needs all our help. Thoughts and prayers are good, send those along by all means, but they will not be enough. Not this time.
</div>

<div><strong>INVASIVE WELL-DIFFERENTIATED KERATINIZING SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA</strong>

<div>Seven words that have upended Susanne's life in one afternoon. I'm going to attempt to give you a layman's explanation of what this means, but it's impossible to do that without getting a little graphic: so forewarned.
</div>

<div>Essentially, this is cancer in her jaw and possibly (but hopefully not) areas around the neck. Sometime around the first part of July, Susanne will go into surgery, and it will be extensive. They will remove part of her jawbone, all the teeth on one side, and all the lymph nodes from her neck. Next, they will take bone, typically from the leg, and graph it in to become her new jaw.

</div>
<div>She will be in a medically induced coma for 24-72 hours, then in intensive care for a few days, then in a regular hospital room for about a week. That's if everything goes perfectly.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Susanne will have a tracheotomy and be on a feeding tube for a while before she can begin a strictly liquid diet. She will begin radiation therapy right away. Then, depending on biopsy results from the lymph nodes, possible begin chemotherapy. Once her mouth has healed a bit, the plastic surgeon will begin creating implanted dentures for her.
</div>

</div>
<div>That's a lot to take in, I know. It's scary. It's hard to fathom... and you and I aren't the ones facing it.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong><em>Everyone wants to know how they can help.</em></strong> In a word: money. You can be assured that everyone who is local to Colorado Springs will do whatever we can physically do to make sure Susanne has what she needs to fight this battle: rides, companionship, shoulders to cry on, and ears to listen. But what Susanne will need most is peace of mind so she can focus on healing and the one way we can help her with that is with funds.

Penelope and Ellie declared themselves besties in preschool 5 years ago, and the Pearsons -- Penelope; her brother, Theo; and her parents, Liz &amp; Todd -- have been a huge part of our lives ever since.

<div>Penelope was diagnosed with B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) on Tuesday, December 13, 2022. She was inpatient in Pediatric Oncology at the UI Children's Hospital until December 23. As of 1/16/23, she has been back for 3 clinical procedures, 2 blood transfusions, and 1 overnight inpatient stay. She has been an absolute warrior through blood tests, lumbar punctures, bone marrow tests, having a port installed, receiving chemo and steroids, and so much more. She has recently started requiring the use of a walker, due to the effects the steroids are having on her leg muscles.
</div>

<div>Penelope just finished the induction phase, and we are waiting and hoping for good results from her next set of tests before she can move to the next phase. Even if all goes according to the medical team's original plan, treatment will take 2.5 - 3 years, and Penelope's specific genetic mutation has a relapse rate around 25%. There is no way to know what bumps we will hit along the way, and it's hard to predict exactly what Penelope and her family will need over the course of this ordeal, which is why I'm starting this as an open-ended fundraiser. There will certainly be a mountain of medical bills, but it's not just that. I'm constantly discovering new needs -- items to sanitize the house and make it accessible for Penelope, repairs and maintenance on the house and the van that now has to travel to and from the hospital regularly, and simply covering for the loss of Liz's income now that she is a full-time caregiver for Penelope.

<div>If you have ever experienced live music in Ames, you are likely only a degree or two of separation from Adam Brimeyer. Many of us hold and cherish fond memories with Adam across many, many years. For some of us, he was a smiling face on stage or a blissed our guitarist jamming out. For others, he was a loyal Dungeon Master, guiding us on epic adventures through mystical lands. For yet others, he was the ears and hands bringing our sound to life on stage.

<div>There are many things Adam loved in this world, and Adam leaves behind the love of his life, fellow adventurer to the very end, Melissa Lanphere.

<div>Mel is left with many expenses at this time, including the home that she and Adam shared together and recently purchased. During this time, we want to celebrate and remember Adam by supporting Mel, his human, the partner he cherished and loved most fiercely. She deserves space to mourn without also dealing with the fear of the financial unknown at this time. We're putting together multiple opportunities to raise funds for Melissa and Adam's end-of-life arrangements. All funds raised will be directly withdrawn by Melissa herself.

<div>Melissa shared that one use of the proceeds will be to install a memorial bench for Adam at Brookside park. In her words, "It was our favorite park, just down the street from the home we built together. Having a space to sit with him will be wonderful."

<div>They were in their house when it exploded and somehow are still living. Fortunately, they just started the fight of their lives in the burn unit at St. Anthony's hospital. They are both badly burned and in critical condition. They will be in the hospital for several months trying to recover.

<div>They have lost everything except thousands of friends. These two would do anything for you, and now they need your prayers and your help.

<div>Update; I am extremely saddened to report, That Bonnie and Al have succumbed to their injuries in the explosion of their home.
