But it opened my eyes very wide to daily torment parents suffer in the unit watching their children fight for their lives.

We will forever be indebted to the nurses and Doctors who cared for Ava, they treated her like their own and cried when we lost her. They welcomed our family and friends in to meet Ava and for that we are forever grateful.

<div>The reality that we have been faced with is that you never know when you will need services like the Neo-Natal or the support of a bereavement charity, and if you are able to support in any way we would be forever grateful.

<div>Declan (Denis) O'Halloran is a 39 year old, married father of two from Newcastle, Co. Tipperary who has received a devastating diagnosis of Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), a rare and progressive Neurological disorder and needs support to complete their home and ensure that it is specially adapted to meet his future medical needs.

<div>Declan moved to Australia in 2008 as many other young adults did where he met his wife Joanne Kenneally from Middleton, Co. Cork. They got married in 2017 and have 2 beautiful kids, Ava aged 5 and Levi aged 3.

<div>In 2021, shortly after the birth of their son Levi, Declan started to develop symptoms of what was initially thought to be MS. He became unsteady on his feet and his speech started to change and he was given a diagnosis of MS in Australia.

<div>This was all happening in the midst of their plans to move back to Ireland. They had obtained planning permission to build their home and had saved over the years to prepare for the move home. Declan was working as a construction supervisor and Joanne was working as a nurse.

<div>When they returned home in 2022 Declan was referred to a Neurologist in Ireland, where further investigations began to determine whether he had MS or something else.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Since returning from Australia, Declan and Joanne have tried to continue their plans of setting up home for their two children. Unable to get a Mortgage due to his diagnosis, Declan began a self-build project, using their savings and income from employment and in the hope that treatment would relieve his symptoms and things would get back to normal. However, during that time, Declan’s symptoms began to get worse which meant he could no longer work.

<div>Now out of work Declan tried to continue working on their house while waiting for treatment for his MS to begin, however, on the 29th of May 2024, he was given the devastating diagnosis of Multiple System Atrophy (MSA).

<div>Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a progressive neurological disorder. It is caused by degeneration or atrophy (shrinking) of nerve cells in several (or multiple) areas of the brain. This can result in problems with multiple bodily functions and causes people to lose coordination and balance or become slow and stiff and also causes changes in speech and swallowing.
</div>

</div>
<div>MSA is a rare disorder and affects about 4.5 people per 100,000 so that at any one time there are only approximately 3,300 people living with MSA in the UK and Ireland, meaning even many healthcare professionals are often unfamiliar with the condition.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Unfortunately, there is currently no cure or specific treatment to modify disease progression for MSA and it comes with a short life expectancy of approximately 10 years from the onset of symptoms. This diagnosis has been devasting for Declan and all of his family.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Complications of MSA vary from person to person but for everyone with the disease, MSA symptoms get worse over time. The symptoms have made daily activities for Declan, harder as time goes on.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Currently Declan is managing some of the symptoms of MSA through making lifestyle and dietary adaptations, medications/ supplements for specific symptoms, physio and speech therapy but the illness has been progressive.
</div>

However, with the increased cost of building, and with his health deteriorating and inability to get a mortgage due to his illness, it has become increasingly difficult for Declan to continue working on his home and the stress and strain of the project is taking it's toll on him and his family.

<div>This has been devastating for Declan as he has poured his heart and soul into building this home for his family. The house is partially built but they now need help to complete their home with the additional need for the house to be adapted for his future management of symptoms. Time is of the essence as they are currently renting a home which is no longer suitable for Declan's needs.

<div>We the friends and family of Declan &amp; Joanne have come together to help them finish their home. We hope to raise sufficient funds to complete the house as soon as possible so Declan can enjoy life together with his young family in their home for as long as possible. The funds raised will go towards completing the house ensuring that it will meet his needs going forward and provide for the ongoing and future medical expenses that Declan has.

DO IT FOR DECLAN- HELP DECLAN AND FAMILY FINISH THEIR HOME

<div>Sophie is an identical twin and has been battling Wilms Tumour since she was 10 years old. She is now 16 and has encountered a series of unfortunate events with her treatments. She was cured after her first treatment but relapsed to her back muscle because of the biopsy. She was due to have surgery to her back but this was cancelled in April 2020 because of covid. Meaning she relapsed again in December 2021, she sadly relapsed again in May 2022 whilst on treatment. She has relapsed again to the same area but the NHS can’t offer much hope and there’s not any promising clinical trials available at this time. So it would be palliative chemo to buy time, which wouldn’t give her much quality of life.

<div>We have reached out to a few different medical facilities around the world and have been told of a very promising procedure that would still be curative for Sophie. We haven’t been given a final figure so have set our target at their ball park figure until we finalise the costs.

Help us save our wee girls life

<div>Our darling niece Tilly was born with a condition called Pierre Robin Sequence (PRS), which is a rare congenital birth defect characterised by an underdeveloped jaw, backward displacement of the tongue, upper airway obstruction and cleft palate. While Tilly is generally thriving she has had breathing difficulties and issues feeding, and is now learning how to swallow safely. She is currently fed via a NG feeding tube through her nostril. 
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Perhaps unsurprisingly, our beloved NHS is struggling to keep up with demand. The South West Cleft Team is unable to perform Tilly’s cleft palate repair operation before the recommended 13 month age, to avoid longer term speech delay. Desperate to give Tilly the best fighting chance of a good recovery, whereby they want to minimise inevitable speech delay, hearing loss and to aid her feeding orally, her parents, Orla and Lloyd, are having to go private for her operation.
</div>

<div>Tilly also faces the challenge of how to progress with her feeding. Ideally she would be weaning like a typical baby and not relying on her feeding tube by now but, despite the incredible care from the NHS specialists, the lack of support means Tilly is far from ready for this. She’s waiting to have a stomach peg fitted (another operation) but again the NHS waiting lists are very long and it’s impacting when to have her cleft op, and subsequently her development. Orla and Lloyd are exploring going private for this also, to speed things up.

<div>Firstly, I'd like to introduce myself: My name is Laura McKeen, and I am proud to say I am a close and dear friend to both Laura and Paul Anderson, for whom I am setting up this GoFundMe page.

<div>As many of you will know, Laura was diagnosed with a rare and incurable stage 4 neuroendocrine tumour in the pancreas with metastasis in her peritoneum back in July 2020. Initially, Laura commenced chemotherapy treatment in Edinburgh. Unfortunately, Laura's bone marrow did not tolerate it well, and she only managed 7 out of the 12 sessions, leaving her in a very vulnerable situation with little to no treatment options available in the UK.
</div>
<div>It was in July 2021, Laura sought alternative treatment at the Hope4Cancer Clinic in Cancun, Mexico, where she started immunotherapy and specific protocols with the hope of stabilising the disease and preventing further progression. Through the ongoing support and generous donations, Laura was able to purchase the necessary equipment to continue her protocol at home in Edinburgh and until recently, it had proven to be effective in stabilising the main neuroendocrine tumour.
</div>

</div>
<div>In July 2022, Laura commenced PRRT (peptide receptor radionuclide therapy) in Glasgow under the care of her NET specialist team. This is targeted radiotherapy to treat the extensive peritoneal disease as well as, the spread to her lymphatic system and liver. Laura completed the PRRT, but once again had adverse effects on her platelet count and her overall quality of life due to the side effects of the treatment.
</div>

</div>
<div>This brings us to the present situation and the challenges that Laura and Paul now face.
</div>
<div>Unfortunately, after a recent emergency CT scan in December, it has shown extensive growth to the liver lesions, which until now were stable. This is a huge cause for concern for both Laura and her oncology team.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Time is now of the essence to try and do everything we can to get Laura the treatment she so desperately needs and deserves. At present, we are looking into further immunotherapy treatment in Mexico and Germany. One of which is the Williams Cancer Institute in Mexico, which has ongoing studies and treatment options available, including intra-tumoral immunotherapy for Laura, but with a starting cost of £140,000. 
</div>

<div>Throughout her initial diagnosis and new way of life as it were, Laura has continued to show strength and courage. She is a true fighter, which is why we need to get behind our girl and do everything we can.

Help Laura Heal her NET cancer

<div><strong>Our beautiful boy Ollie is 9 years old, he was diagnosed with Juvenile Scoliosis in 2016, at 3 years old this was devastating news. Unfortunately his curve has rapidly progressed and he requires urgent spinal surgery.</strong>

</div>Winnie was diagnosed with leukemia age 11 months. She managed to get in remission but then quickly relapsed. She then got into remission again and received a stem cell transplant. However, after everything looking good, three months later she relapsed again, only with a more aggressive form of leukemia.

<div>There are few treatment options still available on the NHS and we are raising money for options abroad so that Winnie can have the best chance of beating this. As Winnie's leukaemia is very rare, in order to have CAR T therapy, a treatment for leukaemia that involves removing cells and training them to fight the leukaemia before putting them back in, we would need to pay for one of the versions of this not available in the UK, which would cost £500,000.

<div>Winnie will also have lots of long term consequences of the treatments she has received at such a young age, so should she beat this, any money left over will be used to support her with these long term issues. These are likely to include dental, fertility and learning issues due to the strong treatments she has been on.

<div>I hate to ask strangers for money for my daughter, but she is the most wonderful, kind little girl who has had the most difficult year. Unfortunately, having money money does give more options and gives Winnie a greater chance of being cured.

<div>Our daughter Fiadh O’Connor is a bright, playful two year old girl from Wexford who has been fighting one of the most aggressive forms of children’s cancer since Christmas 2019.

<div>In the space of one week, Fiadh went from being a healthy 20 month old with a swollen tummy, to being diagnosed with a 14cm cancerous tumour, neuroblastoma, that had already spread to her bones and lungs.

<div>Fiadh has had the best medical care and intensive treatment available in Ireland and she has bravely fought through many sick and worrying weeks of chemotherapy, surgeries, stem cell transplants and long hospital stays. Additionally with thanks to funds already raised, she travelled to New York a number of times to receive a pioneering cancer vaccine.

<div>On the week before Christmas 2019, at one and a half years old, we noticed that Fiadh's tummy looked a little swollen and she seemed a little out of sorts.

<div>Fiadh seemed otherwise well, so Laura booked an appointment with our GP for a check-up. Even in the waiting room, Fiadh looked like the happiest and healthiest child there, climbing on the chairs and saying hi to everyone. Little did we know how much our world was about to change.

<div>Little Fiadh was referred to Wexford General Hospital for scans, where they found a large mass in her abdomen. She was transferred by ambulance to Crumlin Children’s Hospital in Dublin where she was diagnosed with a Stage 4 neuroblastoma tumour; a rare and aggressive childhood cancer. This tumour was the size of a melon at 14cm long and had already spread to her bones, bone marrow, lungs and was pressing on her liver and bowel.

<div>Immediately, just 4 days before Christmas, little Fiadh started aggressive chemotherapy.

<div>Santa delivered a little play kitchen to St. John’s oncology ward in Crumlin on Christmas Eve, which she loved but was just too sick to play with initially.

<div>Neuroblastoma cancer is so rare; only 6 children in Ireland are diagnosed each year. From the beginning, we were told that her chances of survival were only 50:50 due to the aggressive nature of her cancer. Fiadh’s oncology doctors mapped out an aggressive treatment plan for Fiadh over an 18 month period. Despite this extensive treatment, relapse rates for this particular form of cancer are very high. The first treatment stage was to try to shrink the tumour through chemotherapy, so that it could be removed surgically.

<div>For us as Fiadh’s parents, our world has completely stopped. Our amazing little Fiadh went from being a healthy one and a half year old child with a sudden swelling in her tummy, to a child with one of the rarest and most aggressive childhood cancers. We immediately moved to Crumlin to be with Fiadh for the initial stages of treatment, leaving behind her 12 week old brother Páidí with his Nanas, Grandads and Aunties.

<div>For many weeks, Fiadh stayed in hospital getting the most intensive treatment that her tiny body could handle. She was in immeasurable pain; she stopped moving, eating and talking for periods of time and was on daily medication.

<div>Fiadh is a tough cookie and has fought through every difficult stage so far. She has made it through 50 days of chemotherapy, 3 different surgeries, two stem cell transplants, more than 30 blood and platelet transfusions, over 12 weeks of total isolation in Crumlin hospital, with only one adult allowed to be with her at a time. Fiadh has spent over 150 days in hospital since January and she missed her baby brother Páidí each time she was away.

<div>Fiadh’s grandad Jim was receiving palliative chemotherapy at the same time as Fiadh and they often spent days recuperating together. We are all so proud of Fiadh. She has taught us huge strength and courage through this heart-breaking time.

<div>Fiadh has received excellent care from all the staff in Crumlin Hospital and St. Gabriel’s ward in Wexford. We will forever be grateful for the help, support and care they have shown to Fiadh and our family. Fiadh often amazed the nurses and doctors with her ability to climb and her mischievous and kind nature keeps us all smiling.

<div>Our girl Fiadh loves dancing in the kitchen to Ed Sheeran's Galway Girl, eating her favourite ice cream, climbing anything she can and playing with her baby brother Páidí.
