Helping the Backel Family <div>Tyler Backel is a former OHS student and athlete (C/O 2014) and returned this year as a teacher at Oviedo High School.  He is the son of long-time Seminole County Public Schools educators Richard {Crooms High School and Jackson Heights Middle School} and Michelle {Lyman, Hagerty, and Seminole High Schools and Seminole County Virtual School}. After recently spending almost two weeks in the hospital with severe abdominal pain, he was diagnosed with a rare type of colon cancer. He will need to travel to Tampa several times during the 9-12 months of treatment and then continue with testing and monitoring for at least the next 5 years to prevent recurrence.  Tyler and his wife, Cindy, are already accruing monumental medical and travel expenses that are necessary but not covered by insurance. Tyler has depleted his paid sick leave, and his school family thought this was a good way to reach out to friends, family, and the community, offering a way to help.  </div><div><br></div><div>Here’s how you can help:</div><div><br></div><div>1. <div>First and foremost, we want to thank all of you who have shown your support, care, and love for Lora over these past months.  Lora and Kevin have been part of the Trinity Family now for over 17 years. Lora has been in childcare for over 20 years and has had a special connection to the Trinity Family having been the caregiver and teacher to many faculty and staff children when they were in infancy to pre-K.  Lora and Kevin also have a son Peyton in 8th grade at TPS and a daughter in 11th grade at Winter Park HS.

<div>In August, Lora was diagnosed with a rare type of slow-growing brain tumor called a Clival Chordoma. This tumor was  pressing against her brain stem causing significant pain, and beginning to affect some autonomic functions. She underwent successful surgery in October and has recovered well thus far. She is now getting ready to begin proton therapy, 
</div>
<div>Lora has decided to switch careers to nail artistry which is more compatible with her new health reality following surgery.
</div>
<div>With her physical health looking up, the current challenge is financial. The medical bills from the surgery and other therapies are proving insurmountable and are a huge stress on the Keith family.

As some of you know, our Principal at LBHS, Dr. Trent Daniel, discovered last week that her son, Britton has a rare form of bone cancer. Britton is a senior at Oviedo High School, where he excels in academics as well as athletics. He will need to undergo 12 months of treatment beginning this week. Luis is a patient of mine and a student at The Academy of Ability. His family's minivan was stolen from their apartment complex in the middle of the night. <br><br>His mother works for the school and uses this van to bring Luis and other students to school. She brings him to medical appointments and to fun places in and around Orlando. <br><br><br>Luis also uses an adaptive carseat which was funded through alternative insurance as his Medicaid does not cover this. This was stolen along with the van. <br><br><br>Luis is a bright young man who uses a communication device to talk to his friends, family, and teachers.  This family deserves a new van very much. Please donate as much or as little as you can. <br><br>Thank you and Happy Holidays!

<div><strong>Lennox was diagnosed with a brain tumor on October 21st</strong> after several days of headaches and vomiting. Thanks to the quick action of his pediatrician, Dr. Coffman, he was sent to Arnold Palmer Hospital, where imaging revealed a large suprasellar tumor blocking the drainage of cerebrospinal fluid. On October 22nd, under the care of Dr. Elbabaa, he underwent a right frontal stereotactic endoscopic biopsy, a septostomy, and placement of an external ventricular drain. He recovered well and, miraculously, continues to have a normal neurological exam.

<div>His tumor tissue was sent to Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins for genetic profiling to guide treatment, but on November 14th, the family learned that both samples were insufficient for analysis. A second biopsy is now being considered, and no treatment has started yet. The family is also pursuing evaluation at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

<div>Through all of this, Lennox has remained joyful, playful, and resilient. His T-ball team, classmates and friends, their parents, and his beloved VPK teacher have covered him in love—sending nearly 100 handmade cards, celebrating his birthday early with countless gifts, and keeping his presence alive in the classroom with his picture and a handprint to “high-five” each day. Lennox continues to brighten every room he enters with his funny, talkative self.

<div>His mother, Jamie, has spent much of the past decade as a nurse within Orlando Health and now finds herself on the other side—bringing with her a deep understanding of the weight of these decisions.

<div>The family has been lifted by the prayers, kindness, and support of their community. <strong>Funds raised will help with medical expenses, travel for specialty care, time away from work, and costs related to additional procedures or treatment planning.</strong> Lennox’s family is profoundly grateful for every act of generosity and remains focused on ensuring he receives the very best care.
