After twenty years apart, my daughter and I have finally reconnected. She reached out to me in a desperate situation, needing a safe place to live as she prepares for the arrival of her baby. I could relate to her struggle, having left a domestic situation myself just a few years earlier. When she asked for help, I knew I had to do everything I could to support her and give her a fresh start. I spent nearly $6,000 fixing up my grandma's home, which had been badly damaged by renters. I’ve done most of the work myself, even in the Oklahoma heat with no air conditioning. The house still needs essential repairs—mini splits for cooling, new interior and exterior doors, and plumbing for the new sinks. The renters took all the doors off the hinges, so even temporary fixes like window units or mini splits won’t work until the doors are replaced. Without them, it’s impossible to section off rooms and keep the house cool and safe for my daughter and her baby. I’ve put myself into debt to make this home ready, but I’m out of funds and the baby is almost here.
