In Memory of Nancy Johnson and Our Beloved Pets

<div>Howard Bass, 68, is a husband of 42 years to Ruby, and a father to his 26 year old daughter Rebecca. He has spent the last 38 days in the hospital enduring a complicated and mysterious neurological illness, for which his medical team still have no diagnosis.

<div>He is in critical condition in the neurology ICU at Westchester Medical Center and has been in a coma for over a week, on a ventilator and feeding tube. While we are doing everything we can to advocate for his care, wait for testing that leads to a diagnosis, and attempt life saving surgeries and treatments, as of right now, there is no clear path forward for recovery.

<div>At the end of June, Howie experienced a sudden onset of a rapidly progressing illness that impacted his brain and cognitive function, and ability to talk, walk and eat. After extensive and repeated cat scans, MRIs, lumbar punctures and blood tests, all results have been inconclusive. While we are still currently pursuing treatments, we have had to broach impossible conversations about transitioning Howie to comfort care so he can live as comfortably as possible until he passes on.

What was supposed to be a fun, bonding moment very quickly turned into a traumatic event that will stick with us forever. While taking the first dip of the day in deceivingly calm waters, Joanne, Jomarie's older sister, started to get swept away. With a brave loving heart and amazing courage, Jomarie, being a swimmer, instantly swam to save her sister. Both quickly got swept away into the rapids. While the river released Joanne, it is our deepest regret to inform everyone that Jomarie has not yet been found. Please continue to pray for her recovery, so that we may be reunited once more before we say our final goodbye.

<div>What was a normal workday for them became a nightmare when ICE raided the Ambiance warehouse in Downtown LA and enacted unlawful mass collateral arrests where our relatives were unjustly arrested and kidnapped.

The kidnapping of 14 of our loved ones in one swoop is leaving fifteen families with young children, elders who rely on their caretaking, without their primary breadwinners and exacerbating existing struggles to make ends meet.

Help Carla with Legal Fees for Immigration

<div>Hi everyone - I am creating this fundraiser on behalf of our dear friend Lor. For those who haven't had the pleasure of meeting Lor, they are a PhD student in sociology with me at UCLA. They are a community builder, brilliant scholar, and a firecracker of a person. They are the president of our Sociology Graduate Student Association, and have recently won awards in recognition of their incredible teaching &amp; service to our campus and undergraduate students. Under normal circumstances, it's impossible not to feel energized in Lor's presence.

<div>Unfortunately, these are not normal times. Lor has been struggling with severe health issues for many months now, and it's only gotten worse. They've been juggling coursework, teaching, and research along with an endless parade of doctors' appointments, specialists, and labs. The most recent hypothesis is that Lor is fighting "Long COVID", which has triggered exacerbation of pre-existing conditions and additional new diagnoses. Over the past few months I have watched as Lor has struggled to walk, experienced terrifying fainting spells (including one that resulted in an ambulance being called in to statistics class), and now increasingly needs support for daily activities like eating and hygiene. The ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles have worsened their situation (adding not just anxieties but also difficulties due to the air quality).
</div>

</div>
<div>So, this leads us to where we are today. It is no longer feasible for Lor to keep up their teaching and research responsibilities. They need to be able to take a medical leave of absence in order to prioritize doctor &amp; specialist visits, rest &amp; recovery, and figuring out some answers to these health mysteries. Unfortunately, the system is not set up to allow this. While our graduate student union has won 8 weeks of paid medical leave in our recent contract, we are not allowed to use this benefit while also on a leave from coursework. In order for Lor to go on a temporary leave from school, they must sacrifice their income. In a typical workplace, programs like State Disability Insurance (SDI) would be able to supplement this lost income. However, since graduate students are classified as "students" and not "employees", we are not eligible for SDI benefits. To top it all off, by going on a leave of absence from school, Lor will lose their health insurance, and along with it access to their primary care doctor and clinical coordinators at UCLA's student health center. They have the option to pay out-of-pocket for the insurance premium to keep their coverage - but the price is over $4,000 for one quarter (three months) of coverage. This outrageous price doesn't even include the cost of deductibles and copays.
</div>

<div>Lor has done all of the right things. They have continuously advocated for themselves (while suffering from extreme fatigue), and reached out to all possible avenues such as the student disability center, campus case management, academic case management, and more. While everyone recognizes how vital it is for Lor to take time off from school, no one has been able to provide an answer for how they are supposed to financially do that. I have decided to create this GoFundMe as a last resort in hopes of supporting my wonderful friend. I have set the fundraising goal to what they will need in order to simply pay for their health insurance premium and replace their lost income for one academic quarter. Anything we raise above that will go towards supporting future medical and living expenses for Lor. It's not likely that these problems will solve themselves within a one quarter leave of absence, and there is a long road ahead, but I hope that our community can come together to help Lor along this journey.

<div>For those who don't know me, my name is Ti (they/them), and I'm a Black, queer and nonbinary educator, theater maker, and performer. In July of this year, I suffered a concussion while at work. Given the demands of my job and obligations at the time, I was unable to rest and recuperate in the ways that I needed to. Because of that and the need to pay my bills, I still have not been able to fully recuperate from my concussion.

<div>Fast forward ten weeks, and I'm still experiencing the debilitating effects of the concussion: I'm extremely sensitive to lights of any kind, so I wear sunglasses indoors and outdoors, which has also made it very difficult to work on a computer; I get nauseous very easily and am on prescribed medication for it; sounds of any kind can be incredibly overwhelming, so I have high-frequency earbuds on hand at all times; I'm exhausted most of the time, but sleep is not restful; my mental capacity to have conversations or understand things has been severely impacted; I'm experiencing depression and little motivation to meet my basic needs for the first time in years, which is a direct symptom of the concussion.

<div>I've been working partly from home the last few weeks which, while helpful to a certain extent, still exacerbates my symptoms. Between the demands of work, the doctor's visits, the MRI, and scheduling appointments with a neurologist, it's getting harder to take care of myself physically, mentally, and financially.

<div>Many of you may have read the tragic news about the two Americans, Abby Lutz and John Heathco that lost their precious lives in a hotel room in Pescadero, BCS Mexico. What you may have not heard about are the two first responders that almost lost their lives as well, Fernando Valencia Sotelo and Grisel Valencia Sotelo. The brother and sister team were the attending to Abby and John when they quickly became overcome. They were able to exit the room just in time before Grisel collapsed to the ground. Fernando was able to get himself and Grisel back to their ambulance and administer oxygen to himself and to her. They were then rushed to the hospital by other team members. The hospital in La Paz did what they could but they do not have the proper treatment facilities. Today, since Grisel and Fernando were still feeling very ill and were very concerned about long-term effects, as a team we decided to take them to a private hospital in San Jose del Cabo. This is another and bigger out-of-pocket expense.

<div>The Firefighters and Paramedics of Pescadero (Bomberos Voluntarios de Pescadero) is a nonprofit, volunteer operation that has been selflessly serving the Pescadero community since 2007. Our chief, Griselda Lorena Sotelo Amaya, is the first female fire chief of Mexico and the loving mother of Fernando and Grisel. As we grieve for the families of Abby and John, we are overcome with emotion that our chief almost lost two of her own children on this terrible night.

<div>We have not received any compensation from any organization for their medical bills thus far. They were reluctant to go to the only hospital that has proper treatment facilities because of the cost so we are starting this go fund me to hopefully cover the cost of their treatment, any lost time off of work, and any ongoing medical care. Any extra money will go directly to the Bomberos Voluntarios de Pescadero to continue in their valiant efforts to try and keep this community safe. A tragedy like this must not be in vain. <div>On Thursday, April 13, 2023, my nephew Ralph P Yarl was on his way to pick up his twin younger brothers from their friend's house a few blocks away from his house. He didn't have his phone. He mistakenly went to the wrong house, one block away from the house where his siblings were. He pulled into the driveway and rang the doorbell. The man in the home opened the door, looked my nephew in the eye, and shot him in the head. My nephew fell to the ground, and the man shot him again. Ralph was then able to get up and run to the neighbor's house, looking for help.

<div>Unfortunately, he had to run to 3 different homes before someone finally agreed to help him after he was told to lie on the ground with his hands up.
</div>

<div>Ralph Pual Yarl is a fantastic kid, and I am not just saying this because he is my nephew. He truly is. At school, he is a member of the Technology Student Association and Science Olympia Team. Jazz and competition band. He is a section leader in the marching band; a scholar and one of the top bass clarinet players in Missouri. He recently earned Missouri All-State Band recognition with an honorable mention. He plays multiple instruments in the metropolitan youth orchestra. He is a 2022 Missouri scholar academy alumni. Ralph can often be found with a musical instrument. He loves them all.

<div>Last summer, Ralph attended Missouri Scholar’s Academy, where he got a full college life experience. His goal is to attend Texas A&amp;M to major in chemical Engineering. When asked how he plans to get into this university, he said, “Well, if they have a scholarship for music or academics, I know I can get it.”

<div>Ralph's teacher and friends describe him as “ a kind soul,” “quiet,” “friendly,” “well-mannered,” “always willing to help,” “super smart,” and a “musical genius.”

<div>Life looks a lot different right now. Even though he is doing well physically, he has a long road ahead mentally and emotionally. The trauma that he has to endure and survive is unimaginable. He is our miracle. We have heard these types of stories many times, and unfortunately, most black boys are not alive to get another chance.

<div>Ralph deserves to have the future that he has dreams about. He deserves to be the light that shows the world that LOVE wins and that humanity is still Good.

The intention was to repeat this trip every two years to continue to expose our students to the benefits of studying abroad. However, the pandemic interrupted global travel, and now financial constraints <strong>threaten to halt the program altogether. We just CAN'T allow this! </strong>

<div><strong>We have a significant update to the fund as of today, Dec 4, 2022.</strong> When I started this fund two weeks ago, I intended to offset a few of the expenses victims would face, hopefully. The original goal was only $5k, but community generosity far exceeded that in mere hours. To date, we have received over $850,000 in donations for the victims.
</div>

<div>I’ve spent the last two weeks meeting with community members, speaking with victims of prior mass shootings, and seeking guidance from local and national professionals. Last week, a coalition of victims from previous mass shootings came to CO to urge the State and the Colorado Healing Fund to create a centralized fund where 100% of donations will go directly to the victims, and they chose not to do so.
</div>

</div>
<div>The victims deserve 100% of what is donated to them, so I am announcing that this fund is joining forces with the National Compassion Fund (NCF) to create the Club Q Victims and Survivors Compassion Fund since our state would not. The National Compassion Fund was created after the Aurora Theater shooting by victim families after being re-victimized in Colorado and elsewhere by nonprofits. This is the only organization qualified and experienced in handling funds of this size for large groups of victims, as we have here. Our fund, any funds donated to VictimsFirst, and any funds donated directly to National Compassion Fund will all go into one centralized fund called the<strong> </strong><a href="https://nationalcompassion.org/fund/club-q-victims-survivors-compassion-fund/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>Club Q Victims and Survivors Compassion Fund</strong></a>
</div>

<div><strong>What will happen now?</strong> The fund will remain open for those who want a place to donate, where 100% of the money will go directly to the victims to use as is best for them. ONLY the victims know what the best use of the funds means for them. Not me. Not the community.
</div>

<div><strong>Then what?</strong> I have assembled a steering committee comprised of local LGBTQ community members and professionals, such as a trauma therapist, an attorney, victims from the Aurora shooting, a medical doctor, and others who have unique insight and experience so that together we can develop a protocol for the NCF to follow when administering funds. This protocol will be open for public comment and taken to the victims themselves before finalizing so that they are empowered to direct the funds meant for them. Once distributed, an audit will be completed so there is accountability on where the funds went.

<div><strong>Why can’t you just give them the money right now?</strong> The size of the fund and the number of victims does not lend itself to the same administration requirements and safeties that smaller funds do. This is no longer a few thousand dollars to offset expenses; this is an ever-growing large amount of funding that must be equitably distributed to a group of victims in the double or even triple digits, many of whom haven't been identified yet. Blindly giving it out right now will result in some victims receiving nothing or not an equitable amount. That is the opposite of the right thing to do. There are resources available in this wonderful community for those immediate needs.
</div>

</div>
<div><strong>Why can’t you just create a local trust and give it out like you originally planned?</strong> We would essentially be creating the same process that already exists with the National Compassion Fund; it would take much more time and be costly. As more and more information and experiences were shared with me, this became the clear answer to achieve our promise of 100% directly to victims.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>Who is in charge of the funds now?</strong> Control of how the funds are distributed stays with us. The NCF will administer the funds according to the protocol set by the local steering committee. NCF has the experience and the staffing to execute our protocol, validate victims to prevent fraud, and audit the fund for transparency in a way I cannot manage myself.
</div>

<div>I will continue to update regularly on when the steering committee is meeting, when the protocol is open for comment, when it is finalized, and when funds are administered. This is a longer process than you might wish it were, but this will ensure the victims receive ALL that is given to them and that our funds do NOT prevent them from receiving other help or having public aid taken away, as had happened in other shootings when funds were distributed too soon.

<div>The victims whose contact info I have will be updated privately, and their info will be shared with NCF so that a centralized list can be compiled. It may take a day or so to see the Club Q Victims and Survivors Compassion Fund appear on the NCF website.

100 percent going to the Club Q Victims

<div>For those of you that don’t know, Nancy was diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer on November 4. Not only was it devastating news, but a complete shock, as she was training for a half marathon 2 months prior and thought she had a mere cold one month before the diagnosis. In true Nancy style, after receiving the diagnosis, she “gave [herself] 30 min to cry about it alone, then decided it was time to move on and figure out the next step.” She didn’t complain once, but rather was more concerned how her family and friends would cope with the news, and wondering if she should cut off her hair immediately so she could donate it to Locks of Love. Her strength, selflessness and unwavering positive perspective are beyond inspiring. She is the ultimate role model.

<div>Although she does have health insurance, it will cover only 80% of medical costs and Nancy is liable for the remaining 20% of the costs. Costs of stage 4 cancer treatment typically range anywhere from $200,000-$500,000. Not only are the exponential treatment costs a concern, but Nancy will have to take extended time off work. Obviously Nancy would never complain or ask for anything, but we don’t want her to have to stress about finances on top of everything else… hence the reason for sending this to you. There is definitely no pressure to give money, but if you feel moved to contribute to her medical expenses, the link is below. <div>The United Order of Tents is one of the country's first Black women’s benevolent societies, initially founded in 1848 to provide aid to enslaved people via the Underground Railroad. For more than 75 years, the women of the Eastern District Tents have been quietly fulfilling their mission to feed the hungry, tend to the sick, bury the dead, help raise children and care for the elderly here in Brooklyn.

<div>Its Eastern District headquarters is the once-opulent mansion at 87 MacDonough Street, which has hosted meetings, weddings, and luncheons and has been a center for mutual aid since the Tents bought it in 1945. This historic home was built in 1863, is listed on the New York State and National Register of Historic Places, and sits in Stuyvesant Heights, a historic district. It is a beacon of history for the Tents and the community. Unfortunately, today we are struggling to save our home and rebuild our organization in the Eastern District. We hope to continue to be a beacon of hope in the Bed-Stuy community.

<div>In the last few years, the headquarters of the Brooklyn Tents has fallen into disrepair. With dues dropping due to members passing away, the society has struggled to find money to pay for the property’s upkeep.
</div>

</div>
<div>Several years ago, the Tents sold a large part of their land in Bed-Stuy to restore the historic villa to its former glory. A contractor was paid to do the work, but sadly, the women of the Tents say workers did significant damage to the building.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>The mansion is still in operation as the Tents Brooklyn headquarters, the center of the group’s mutual aid work. Still, the women now work in a building with half-done construction, boarded-up windows, a leaky roof, faulty wiring, and no radiators.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Plus, due to its location, the Tents have been repeatedly targeted by property prospectors hoping to acquire their headquarters for profit.
</div>

Help Mom get a car

<p>There are no weekends in war. There's no time off. Every day feels like the one before. You find peace in your sleep, until somewhere around the 365th day you get to go home. We spent two years like this, patrolling the Hindu Kush, dividing our time between fighting with the Taliban and talking with locals. Sometimes they were the same people. <p>Our two interpreters haven't had a weekend in years. They've been at war their whole lives. Just as their parents were. Just as their children will be. The Taliban are currently steamrolling toward Kabul. Toward our interpreters, our friends. They placed a magnetic bomb under one's car. He lost his leg and eye. His children in the back were spared.

<p>These two men have families. Each has a wife. Both have five children. That's fourteen people. Because they worked with US Army they meet the criteria to receive a visa, but without the requisite paper trail required by an out of touch and harder to reach bureaucracy their application remains in limbo. Our word wasn't sufficient. We've been waiting weeks for guidance on how to proceed. In the meantime, the country's folding in on itself.

<p>We haven't used their names yet and won't. You'll see their faces pictured here have been obscured. They're being hunted and we need to help them. We need money. We don't even know how much. If the visa application goes through, they'll need a few thousand just to get passports, documents translated, and pay for travel and accommodations. If Kabul falls in a week, we'll need to buy plane tickets to evacuate fourteen people. Pay for food and shelter until we can get their visas approved. Anything left over will be split equally among the families to resettle. They can't simply wait for refugee status. Not with targets painted on their backs.

I am starting an initiative to provide free safety alarms for Asian Americans in NYC. I am asking all of you to please help make a tangible difference and do something to #StopAsianHate.<br /><br />I’m not sure how I can even begin to describe how I’ve been feeling the past few months. Watching daily videos and news stories of our AAPI brothers and sisters get beat up on the street, set on fire, slashed with knives, called racial slurs, have their businesses destroyed, and even murdered—that takes a toll on you. It’s a mixture of debilitating grief, white-hot anger, and shock from the sobering realization of how LITTLE people in this country care about Asian American lives. But it’s also a swelling gratitude for the allies that have shown up, spoken out, and fought for us. But now what? <br /><br />After the media attention of the Atlanta mass shooting has expired, after #StopAsianHate stops trending, we see hate crimes still happening every single day. We’re left to live with this fear. I feel HELPLESS. I don’t know how to fix this. I’m not a politician or a community organizer. I’m just a native New Yorker who happens to be an Asian-American woman and I’m TIRED of seeing this happening to my community. I just want to do something tangible that serves my community. We need to take care of each other. The fear of walking outside or taking the subway right now is real. And since I can’t legally buy and distribute pepper spray, personal alarms are a great protection when walking outside alone—they emit an ear-piercing loud alarm sound when pulled which discourages attackers and draws attention to you while also notifying bystanders. It’s not perfect, but I feel a little more protected walking down the street at night.<br /><br />To request a safety alarm, email <strong>[email redacted]</strong> with your name, who the alarm is for, and mailing address and I’ll ship one to you directly. A portion of the alarms will be donated to senior community centers and pharmacies in Chinatown and Flushing. On April 11th, our 20-year-old son, Daunte Wright Sr., was fatally shot and killed by a Brooklyn Center police officer during a routine traffic stop. Our family is distraught as we struggle to understand why our loved one was taken away from us in such a senseless manner.  <br /><br />All funds raised through this site will go towards covering funeral and burial expenses, mental health and grief counseling for Daunte's family,  to help the Wright family in their fight for justice, and to provide support for family.  100% of the funds raised on this site will go to the Wright family. NO PART OF THESE FUNDS WILL BE USED TOWARDS LEGAL FEES.  The road to justice is very long, and the Wright family will not let what happened to Daunte be forgotten. The Daunte Wright Sr. Memorial Fund

My step-sister <strong>Ying Tan "Jami" Webb</strong> was the only child of Xiaojie “Emily” Tan, one of the victims of the mass shooting that occurred in Georgia on March 16th.  I am creating this campaign on Jami’s behalf.<br /><br />This unspeakable loss has left Jami in shock, trying to dealing with this incomprehensible trauma. We, her extended family, are rallying around her, attempting to comfort her, even as we try to protect her from the overwhelming attention by the press and curious, compassionate strangers. Jami is a gentle soul and normally a private person, but this has forced her into the spotlight so she can give voice to the legacy of her beloved mom. I invite you to click the links provided below to learn more about Jami’s mom.<br /><br />Jami and her mom where the only two from her family to immigrate to the US, so in the wake of this tragedy, Jami is separated from her Chinese relatives, by distance and by the pandemic. Jami’s support network here in the US is small, and we are doing our best to make sure she is taken care of, but she has suffered an immeasurable loss.  Xiaojie was an extraordinary woman--as Jami said to me, "My mom was petite and fierce! She was a feminist without meaning to be, and even gave me her name, which is rare in Chinese culture."  Xiaojie loved her life in the US, and worked really hard to provide for her family—she was financially supporting her sister and mother in China. Jami is heartbroken that she will never get to travel with her mom again, but intends to bring her mother's remains home to Nanning as soon as she can travel safely. She and her family are planning a burial and services for Xiaojie in China.<br /><br /> We recognize that this mass shooting is a hugely evocative tragedy, and that many people around the country feel affected by it. It has come to our attention that many people want to help and support Jami, and she is touched and honored by this expression of care.<br /><br /> In addition, as the days pass, and the awful reality begins to settle in, we realize that Jami has plenty of unforeseen expenses including extensive funeral costs, traveling back to China with her mom's remains, caring for her Chinese relatives as they all figure out the way forward, plus the expenses involved in settling her mother’s affairs, and potential legal fees since her mother’s death is part of a murder investigation. <br /><br /> Any sudden loss of a beloved parent is terrible, but to have it happen in this violent horrific and painfully public way is excruciating.  Jami and her adopted father (who is also my stepfather) are longing for space and peace so they can begin to heal. ATL Spa Shooting Family Survivor Fund:  Jami Webb

My mother, Hyun Jung Grant( maiden name Kim), was one of the victims of the shootings in Atlanta, Georgia at Gold Spa. This is something that should never happen to anyone. She was a single mother who dedicated her whole life to providing for my brother and I. It is only my brother and I in the United States. The rest of my family is in South Korea and are unable to come. She was one of my best friends and the strongest influence on who we are today. Losing her has put a new lens on my eyes on the amount of hate that exists in our world. As much as I want to grieve and process the reality that she is gone, I have a younger brother to take care of and matters to resolve as a result of this tragedy. Frankly, I have no time to grieve for long. I will need to figure out the living situation for my brother and I for the next few months, possibly year. As of now I have been advised to move out of my current home within the end of March to save money and find a new place to live. My biggest priority right now is to put my mother to rest and plan out the funeral but due to some legal complications, I am unable to obtain my mother's body. I don't think I'll be able to figure out this whole situation along with legal matters if given 2 weeks to move out. Any donation will be used as funds for basic living necessities for my brother and I such as food, bills, and other expenses. I wish to stay in my current home for at least one more month to sort everything out. Any amount would be forever appreciated.
