Help our friend, a rape survivor, take time off work!

Our dear friends Cynthia and River have been fighting to stay in their home for the past 3 years. They were involved in a landmark court case that set precedent in support of queer and disability housing rights in B.C. This court case drained Cynthia’s retirement savings and health. While the judge ruled in their favour, the legal process forced our friend to deplete any savings set aside for her old age and ongoing medical care. This has left Cynthia – who lives on a disability pension – in a dangerously precarious financial situation, not to mention the effects of the emotional and physical exhaustion that came with this painful case – SO THEY NEED OUR HELP! As of right now Cynthia and River don’t have the money to pay the latest bill from the lawyer’s office, and they don't have the funds to finish the legal process that is estimated to be an additional $40,000.  Let’s come together as a community to help  them cover the immediate costs  and get back some of what they have lost. (PS: Want to know more? read below to get more details) Who are Cynthia and River? Cynthia Brooke has spent her life dedicated to social justice, and working in the service of others. At only 14 she ran a soup kitchen, and co-founded a food bank. She has been a volunteer for disability access for many years, and has volunteered for the Vancouver Folk Music Festival in this role for the past 30 odd years. She spent many years working in the Downtown Eastside in low income social housing. In the 90s Cynthia was the co-owner of the much beloved Bookmantel, a queer bookstore on Commercial Drive, which was a hub for queer activism before the days of social media. In 2004, Cynthia became a proud longshore worker with ILWU, devoted herself to volunteering on the executive, and became a certified human rights officer. Since being medically retired, Cynthia continues to volunteer as a human rights advocate in her many communities, much of which she does quietly. River Tucker, formerly a journalist in Germany, moved to Canada 13 years ago and has been a competitive boxer and coach since. She has been running Queer Box Camp Vancouver for over a decade, with a commitment to make boxing and fitness more accessible for queer and trans folks and people living with chronic illness - QBC would not exist today without this house and Cynthia’s support. River volunteered as the female athlete rep on the board of BC Boxing for years, helped coach womens training camps and is currently helping to shape a new policy that will enable trans boxers to compete in BC and Canada. She also teaches a gender expansive, trans-positive boxing class for kids at a Vancouver community centre. For the last two elections River has been able to combine her dedication for queer and trans rights with disability justice by training election workers, with an emphasis on voting access.  Cynthia’s and River’s home has always been a space to create connection, foster community, and provide sanctuary for friends of friends and cats in need of a safe harbour. Their home has been a second home to many and a place of respite for friends, family, and community to gather, share food, rest and organize. Want to know more about what happened?  In 2001, four queer, working-class people, who at the time were close friends, scraped together funds to purchase a derelict, side-by-side duplex in Vancouver. None of them had ever imagined that they would be able to realize the dream of buying a home, and this was made possible by the former owners offering them the home at a significantly discounted rate.  Over the years, circumstances changed. Two friends have since died, and the remaining two parted friendship; each has their own home, separate from one another. Around 3 years ago, one of them decided they wanted to leave and started legal action against Cynthia, which would have involved Cynthia and River having to leave their home. This process has, and continues to be, holistically depleting. In March 2022, the <a href="https://www.bccourts.ca/jdb-txt/sc/22/05/2022BCSC0526.htm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">judge decided</a>  in Cynthia’s favour, saying she can stay in her home.  Cynthia has used up all of her savings, which were her disability fund, as she is expected to supplement medical care when retired.  A precedent in support of queer &amp; disability rights Justice Crerar determined in a groundbreaking, and precedent-setting ruling that a disabled person has the right to stay in their home, and a queer person has the right to stay in the safety of their queer neighbourhood. Furthermore, he ruled that while a person has a right to realize a profit in this outrageous real estate market, it is not a right to maximize profit at the expense of forcing others from their home. These precedents will have positive implications across Canada for disabled, queer, and financially marginalized folks for years to come.  Unfortunately, all of this has come at great physical, emotional, and financial cost for our dear friends. While Cynthia and River maintain the right to stay in their home, it has exhausted monies that were set aside for medical expenses as Cynthia ages and tends to her health needs. That money also falls short of what is needed to complete the process of legally separating the properties. Why is this an issue of health? Cynthia was catastrophically injured at work in 2008, and shortly after she was rehabilitated from the accident Cynthia contracted a virus that has left her chronically ill. Her doctor medically retired her from work 6 years ago. While her home has increased substantially in value over the years, she is unable to access that value as she is permanently disabled, and therefore unable to pay back any potential loans or mortgages. The true value in her house is that it is her forever home that will allow her to tend to her complex health needs. What will money raised be used for? Money raised will be used to pay the lawyers until this process is completed. Any additional funds will be used to restore some of Cynthia’s depleted savings, which were anticipated to supplement her medical costs at retirement age. The law in B/C. has changed: Cynthia will only get back 20% of the $100,000 that  she spent on legal costs because she won the case.  Cynthia and River would like to thank their lawyer Morgan Camley, and her amazing team. Morgan has done all her work pro bono, but it takes a village and the villagers must be paid (the associates and  court costs are not pro bono).

Hi there and Thank you for reading this! Please share my story! I'm currently at risk of being homeless in NY and need help ASAP raising much needed funds to pay rent. My current sublease agreement is up on November 30th, and I am not able to afford the costs of current rent, in addition to rent and moving costs to secure a new place. I don't usually ask for help and have a hard time accepting or receiving assistance, but I am running out of options and don't know how else I can keep doing this all on my own.  As a queer, lantinx artist who is self employed, I have lost wages, and countless opportunities to create the income that I usually would through grants, fellowships, commissions through museums, artist talks, and general sales of artwork due to the many closures during Covid 19. As I continue to look for more stable means of income, I am scraping by with my unemployment of $160 per week, which is no longer enough to cover my current rent, let alone prepare to move and put down a first months and security on a new space.  With these funds, I will be to pay any outstanding rent and utilities due by the 30th. Approx. $200. and provide a way to keep me from having to be out in the street looking for new a place. Most of the shared housing options that I have been in contact with run on average $700/mo plus utilities, so the remaining funds would allow me to secure a safe place through the next few months while I continue to look for work.  Since the end of the month is around the corner, I am asking that folks consider any amount to donate, ASAP. I will keep this going in the event that an eviction process begins, while not sure how long CDC Covid protection extensions will cover tenants here in New York.  I am deeply grateful and humbled by any and all financial help, generosity, and compassion shown to me during this time of immense adversity. In solidarity with and at the request of local queer and trans community organizers in West Bengal, India we are inviting international allies to support trans communities in West Bengal during the COVID-19 crisis.  India's 1.3 billion people have been ordered on a 21-day lockdown in order to slow the spread of coronavirus, a measure which is creating dangerous ripple effects for more marginalized individuals, including those with reduced access to wealth, housing, and information. Police in West Bengal reportedly <a href="https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/939vpv/indian-police-are-being-accused-of-beating-a-man-to-death-for-violating-the-coronavirus-lockdown" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">beat an individual to death</a> who went out to buy milk last Wednesday. The trans community in West Bengal is already especially susceptible to both police brutality and housing insecurity. We are calling on international allies to lend support to ensure that trans folks in West Bengal have access to housing, food, and security during this especially challenging time. Local organizers are fundraising ₹1500000 (roughly CAD$27,800) in order to provide 250 trans folk in West Bengal, each with a monthly living package of ₹2000 (roughly CAD$37) for the next three months. We seek to raise CAD$10,000 from international donors toward that goal. 


Even as we all face this crisis in our own communities, it is imperative that we share resources where possible, including across international lines. The Canadian dollar and many other international currencies can go a very long way in West Bengal and so international support stands to make a significant impact. Support West Bengal Trans Community amid COVID-19

Can you provide vital support to India’s most excluded and vulnerable people during the Coronavirus lockdown? The situation India’s Dalit and Adivasi (tribal) communities comprise millions of the population and many of these people are daily wage earners, already living hand-to-mouth. Millions of people in precarious employment have already lost their jobs due to the government-imposed lockdown, and there are no relief packages of any kind for these daily paid workers. Many families now have literally no means of purchasing or accessing food. The stigma of being a ‘Dalit’, a so-called ‘Untouchable’, is making it even harder for Dalit and tribal communities to access the most basic and essential items, such as food and healthcare. The reality for these communities is that they live in slums, in very close proximity to others; social distancing is a luxury that isn’t available to them. This is why your support is critical. What you can do You can help by giving money if you’re able to do so; a little money goes a long way in India, and the total cost to buy essential food and safety items for 50 families is just £830. If you can’t donate money, you can share this fundraiser, or ask your family and friends to donate. Vital COVID help for India's marginalised families

Two activists (anonymous) who have regularly been speaking to some of the Hijras over the phone, based in Dhaka and Joya supports,  have said that Covid-19 lockdown has been catastrophic for the girls' ability to earn money. Joya has been working tirelessly to get food to the Hijras as well as raise money to cover their rent since most of them are room bound and unable to beg or do sex work (which is their normal practices for getting a liveable income). We understand these are tricky times for everyone financially, but for those who feel able to donate some money to support Joya and keep some of the Hijras stable and fed, we would really appreciate it. When we spoke to Joya she admits that although things have been tricky during lock down to get aid to the Hijras, she has still been successful in leaving the food at drop off points. She has also been helping the girls to pay their rent with any donations. Joya said the following amounts will cover: £5 - will supply food to a Hijra for one day. £50 - will pay a Hijra’s rent for one month. Hijra definition: "In reality, ‘hijra’ is actually an umbrella term that is used to describe a group of people that may include intersex people, castrated men and also transgender women. This group of people live as a community or ‘family’, under a community leader or [a] ‘guru’. When I first joined an international NGO in Bangladesh, my office colleagues refused to communicate with me about anything except work issues, or to sit with me at the same table during lunch. A lot of women from that organisation also refused to let me use the women's toilet in that office. Because, in their perception, I am not a man or a woman and I am a Hijra which is supposed to be a bad thing (however, I Identify as a transgender-woman and not a hijra since I am not engaged in "Hijragiri", nor am I directly a part of the Hijra community). They were scared of me and I could see the fear in their eyes. It took me a while to change their misconceptions and fear about me or human beings like me in society with my logical explanations, and to bridge that distance between them and I—which wasn't created by me in the first place. I have faced this kind of discrimination in my own home, my own locality and in my own country, everywhere, from almost everyone. Now I work not just for transgender people or Hijras but for all the people coming from a diverse gender and sexual identities because I have experienced what they go through since I went through the same discrimination and pain, and I still do in many ways. Covid-19 Aid for Hijra community in Bangladesh

My name is <a href="http://www.sydneybaloue.com/">Syd</a> and I am a Fighter. I fight for racial, social, and gender justice. I fight for LGBT rights. And now I am fighting for… Trans Visibility in Boxing. I am raising $5000 before the end of 2018 to be able to train and fight in the Men’s Amateur Division of Boxing of USA Boxing. After beginning medical transition last year, I thought that I would never be able to fight again because I was transgender. I trained around the world as an amateur boxer for seven years in the Women’s Division at the best gyms in Europe, and now I am grateful to return to the famous Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn to train with my former coach, Don Saxby. After coming out to my coach as transgender and speaking with the great folks at Gleason’s, I will be able to fight again with the support of Gleason’s community, but I need your help to reach that finish line. Fighting is so important to me as a trans person as it means that I can get back in to my body and really take ownership over it. While I’ve succeeded in my first steps towards boxing again, I need your help to reach the finish line. Gym fees and trainers’ fees are pretty expensive. Your donation of $10 or more will help me pay for the following: -Gym fees -Trainer’s fees -Equipment Through supporting and believing in me as a boxer,  I will pay it forward through coaching trans and gender non-binary black and POC folks in New York City. Several had to be treated for hypothermia and one protestor who was hit directly with a grenade has reportedly had her arm amputated as a result. Everyday becomes more evident that the defenders of America must stand with the Water Protectors. Let's stop this savage injustice being committed right here at home. If not us, who?
