 I was recently selected to travel to North Carolina for a writing workshop with one of my favorite writers and thinkers, Alexis Pauline Gumbs. I applied as an absolute moonshot, and I'm in disbelief about this opportunity to work on my ancestor writing project in a sacred container. I leave in just two weeks and am seeking some help to cover the $2500 tuition and travel expenses.

Easing the Burden for Our Injured Engineer

<div>Shearing season is here and lasts all through April and May. This is also a time of planting, wool washing and processing, repair and many other ongoing tasks such as sheep herding. Resisting families will gather with locals and pods of supporters to work on these things in the busy buzz of spring.

<div><strong>Where does the money go?</strong>
</div>
<div>The majority of funds raised will go directly to families who are resisting relocation. The funds will be distributed in the form of cash and necessary seasonal supplies. We also use these funds to buy raw wool from our hosts. We then resell this wool (mostly raw), which allows us to generate more funds to recirculate back into the community through our ongoing mutual aid fund that supports resisters year round. Any funds not used during this camp will also move to our mutual aid fund for Black Mesa resisters.

<div>A small portion of funds raised will go toward camp expenses, primarily shears and shearing related supplies. Nearly all of these supplies are gifted to resisting families after shearing is complete.

<div><strong>Who are we and what do we do?</strong>
</div>
<div>Black Mesa Solidarity Network (BMSN) is a decentralized all-volunteer network from across Turtle Island that works year-round to respond to Diné families resisting relocation laws. Each year, BMSN organizes a Spring Shearing Camp with Diné families resisting relocation pressures throughout Big Mountain / Black Mesa and surrounding communities. BMSN supporters are hosted by Diné families, strengthening relationships with resistance through mutual aid.

<div><strong>Why does this matter?</strong>
</div>
<div>Elders and families of Big Mountain / Black Mesa continue to sustain their traditional Diné lifeways in the face of the devastating effects of colonial land theft and coal mining. The 1974 Navajo-Hopi Land Settlement Act redrew the boundaries of the Hopi and Navajo Reservations, which displaced hundreds of Hopi and 10,000 - 15,000 Diné. These borders reflected the colonial government's collusion with massive resource extraction.

</div>
<div>However, hundreds of families refuse to leave their ancestral homelands, which span 900,000 acres across 20 Diné communities. More than 50 years later, the coal mines are defunct, but the pressure to relocate remains. These pressures include: livestock restrictions, threats and intimidation from law enforcement and government agencies, lack of running water and electricity as well as the impacts of climate change.

<div>In March 2026, <strong>Jena Rodgers has the incredible opportunity to join a medical mission trip to Retalhuleu, Guatemala with Faith in Practice.</strong> From March 13th through March 21st, she'll be working alongside surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare volunteers to provide needed surgeries to underserved communities. They will be performing 80-90 general surgeries, including laparoscopic cholecystectomies, hernial repairs, and lipoma removals.

<div>Despite navigating neurodivergence in tough institutional setting, Timmi has a 3.1 GPA. Without the funds to pay for summer session, the School will soon unenroll Timmi from their fall courses, jeopardizing their ability to complete the program.

<div>Ironically, the School of Social Work -- which should support healthy relating -- has ignored Timmi's attempts to repair relationships and address harm in non-punitive ways. <div>My mother Louise got diagnosed with Stage 4 Pancreatic cancer and stage 4 non-alcoholic cirrhosis in December of 2024. She has been living with my family and I since June 2024. We noticed a decline in her health in September and urged her to go get seen my her primary. They sent her for test after test. They finally sent her to a liver specialist because of a low white blood cell count. They did an MRI of her abdomen and weeks later informed us that she had cirrhosis. This was a shock to see that it was already at Stage 4. They continued to run other tests and imaging to make sure there wasn't anything else. In November they found a mass on her pancreas. We went to UNMH and they did a biopsy on the mass. Shortly after the appointment we got a call from a cancer specialist and they told us that she had Pancreatic cancer. It was a waiting game for almost a month to be seen by an actual cancer specialist. When we finally were seen on December 17th, the doctor told us that she was at Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer. Unfortunately for my mother, there is no cure for her cancer. The Doctor suggested Chemotherapy to try to lengthen her life by as much as possible. She is 2 treatments in to Chemo. The first round caused her to lose 6 pounds in just 2 weeks. We had to take a break in between treatments to give her time to gain her strength back. Due to her cirrhosis and her cancer, her diet is very strict so she's not really able to eat many things. This makes it extremely hard for her to keep the strength she needs and to put any weight back on. Before she was diagnosed she weighed 180 pounds, now she is 142. She's lost over 40 pounds in just a few months.

<div>I hate to have to think about this but I know her time is very limited. I wanted to start pre-planning her funeral arrangements ahead of time so hopefully I can have them paid off and taken care of before her time actually comes. My dad passed away in 2022 and that came as a surprise, the cost to give him his funeral was ridiculous and left a financial burden on us. I don't want that to be the case this time around. That's why I'm asking for any help that we can get during this hard time.

Things such as adult diapers, Ensure drinks (These are one of the few things she's able to consume), things to help her get around our house/bathroom more easily. <div>Hello, my name is June, and I am trying to raise money to pay a retainer for an attorney to get my son back. I lost my son on a default judgment back in May of this year. I froze out of fear, and hoped his father would change his mind and it would all go away. It didn’t. I ended up losing my son to a father who hadn’t so much as text to check on his child in an entire year. To add to this, my son is trans and his father doesn’t approve; which is part of what started him taking me to court to begin with. In May of last year (2023) I got my son back from his father with a head full of lice. Upon telling his father that I was going to cut my sons very thick hair to make it easier to get the lice out, he proceeded to threaten me and tell me if I cut my sons hair he was going to take me to court for full custody. I cut his hair. My son reached out to me on social media after being taken away, and got in trouble for talking to me and I haven’t heard from him since. My son wants to be with his mama. He needs his mama, and I need my son. Please help me. I need an attorney and I can’t afford it. My son wants to talk to a judge. Please help me. <div>Here, in Rafah, from our fifth displacement, we barely have the luxury to choose which of those five displacements was less cruel, nor could we dare to whisper this word : home.

<div>Five months ago, the narrative could have been so different. This graduation photograph below must tell a lot about that. The best about it is that it truly defines me in just three words: cheerful, ambitious, and a dreamer. Yet, war always has its way of stealing your light with a trice.

It fills my heart with darkness every moment I open my phone gallery scrolling up to that promising life where I no longer belong. I used to work at Oxford, one of the leading English and training centers in Gaza, mixing commitment with pleasure to dream of a better future. Pursuing my education through a decent scholarship was always the ultimate goal I believed Oxford would secure. I started my "IELTS" preparation when the war knocked on my door with a massive "Hello"! Once Oxford was a target, my work as well as my dreams were shattered, leaving me without a heart and soul.

I can never forget his tears of bitter and deep grief especially when I lately figured out how much it meant to him. He told me that, regardless of his household goods, there was a special room left as a warehouse where he practically had lost his all investment as a newly respected merchant.

<div>The war has stolen much more than walls and doors, it has also deprived us of that sacred sense of being safe and peaceful. It left us with a pathetic feeling of loss and despair. During our exhaustive journeys between places that look like anything but home, we ended up with a poor tent where experiencing any simple daily life routine is a challenge. It takes hours to make bread and dozens of kilometers to find drinkable water. In simple words, life here is unbearable hell.

<div>On June 22nd Daryn Ladabour and Alhelí Caton-Garcia were heading home to the South Valley on their motorcycle when they were struck from behind by a hit-and-run driver who then fled the scene on foot. Although Daryn and Alhelí were thrown from the bike, wonderfully and thankfully they both survived and will make a full recovery. However, each of them sustained significant injuries and were immediately taken to the emergency room. Daryn sustained a fractured wrist, a cracked rib, and internal bleeding. Alhelí sustained a broken hand and pelvis. Both have extensive "road rash" and lacerations.

<div>Daryn has been discharged, but continues to experience intense pain and difficulty moving. Alhelí remains hospitalized and will likely require many more days of hospital care and in-patient physical and occupational rehabilitation. Medical bills and loss of income are two things we can help them with while they heal and recover from this traumatic and terrifying event.

David's Kidney Cancer Recovery

<div>Hey everyone, Andrew writing here at Jessica’s request as she’s pretty overwhelmed at the moment. Last week, her mother Kim suffered a stroke which caused her to lose her speech and mobility, and placed her in Jessica’s care. This also came amongst a home foreclosure for her mom. The stroke caused her to return to a childlike state, sometimes speaking incoherently but sometimes whispering coherent words, with half her body being numb. The treatment the hospital recommended was for Kim to receive a bed at a speech therapy clinic, but without health insurance she was denied.

<div>We’re not sure what the overall cost of recovery is going to be, but because the hospital released her mom with nowhere to go Jessica has to come up with money immediately to care for her. Jessica is currently staying in the guest room of a friend, and is now responsible for finding an assisted living facility that will house her mom (seems to be close to $4,000 a month depending on facility), paying for speech/physical therapy, and fitting housing as needed for a fall-risk patient until she can be placed in a facility, while also dealing with the foreclosure of her mother’s home and moving belongings. Anything you can give is much appreciated, and we’ll try to update with actual costs as it becomes known.

My older brother Gabriel Silva tragically passed away during the early morning hours of June 1st, 2024. Just hours after the difficult decision was made to cease medical treatment and transition to hospice care to prioritize his comfort. <br /><br />I’m so heartbroken. My father died 18 years ago and our mother suffered from addiction for her entire life. Gabriel was one of the only constants in my life, and he was always trying to take care of me. Even as we’ve grown older and he moved to Arizona, he’d always be calling me asking if all my bills were taken care of, or if I needed money for gas or fun or anything. <br /><br />Gabriel grew up with our older brother Lawrence who was diagnosed with cancer and passed away four years ago in 2020. Gabe took care of him on hospice and was there until his final moments. Lawrence’s death destroyed Gabe and his drinking began shortly after. The final straw was the death of our mother just a few weeks ago. I knew when I saw him when he came to say goodbye to our mom before she died that his drinking had spiraled and I regret not trying harder to get him help. <br /><br />Four years. That’s how long it took for alcohol to take my brothers life. Many of us have parents who’ve spent our entire lives drinking, and we foolishly fall into believing that our bodies can tollerate the same. They can’t. <br /><br />Gabriel dropped out of high school to join the work force to keep the bills paid and food on the table. He worked every single day from ages 15-27, rarely ever taking time off for holidays or vacation. I know that if the pressures of capitalism didn’t exist, If all our basic needs were met and he didn’t have to stress about rent or bills. My brother would have never picked up the bottle and would be alive right now. We have so much anger and rage. This empire of exploitation has robbed our family of so much. We will overcome this, and the pain will fuel our fight to make change. To positively impact the lives of young people who we never want to see fall down the same path as my brother.<br /><br />With tears in his eyes, one of the last coherent things my brother asked me was to put up a fundraiser in his honor. Not to help give him a beautiful funeral or reception or anything like that. But to help take care of me since he can’t anymore. Because that’s how selfless and caring he is. Even in his dying days he’s more worried about his family than his own fate. <br /><br />As selfless as his wish is, this fundraiser is to help cover the costs of laying him to rest. This the the third death our family has experienced in less than two months, over $10,000 in end of life expenses already exhausted. Any contribution or share is greatly appreciated.

<div>Originally opened by Dale Porter, later GG Hardin in 1974, then officially taken over by mariachi musician Eralico “Eric” and his partner Marcella Perez. The unit that Ren’s Den currently occupies was the famous music store known as “Cristy Records”. The record store was best known for its selection of Spanish and most importantly New Mexican music, including a recording studio in the unit next door to Ren’s, for important artists such as Al Hurricane.

Emergency Surgery for Hades

<div>Indigenous climate activist, artist, musician, and father Jacob Johns was shot in the chest this morning, Sept 28.2023, during a No Juan de Oñate statue peaceful prayer ceremony in Tewa territory (more commonly known as Española, New Mexico). Jacob put his body between women and children when the shooter charged towards the altar. Jacob prevented the shooter from harming women and children. The shooter attempted to fire again but his gun jammed preventing him from committing a mass shooting of indigenous peoples while they were in prayer and ceremony. He was air-lifted to a hospital in Albuquerque, and had surgery. The shooter, who was wearing a red MAGA hat, is in custody of tribal police. We ask everyone to please pray with us that he survives this surgery and doctors have’ the strength and wisdom to help him.

<div>Jacob, who is Hopi and Akimel O'odham, has dedicated his life to Indigenous and climate justice. He is a skilled muralist and speaker, and specializes in non-violent, peaceful “artivism”. He has a teenage daughter, she and his other family are currently flying from Washington State to Albuquerque New Mexico to be by his side.

Help Jacob Johns Recover from Terrorist Shooting

<div>Hey folks. So FRS started our spring tour with multiple fill-in horn players planned to round out the lineup and make the tour successful. All of them fell through, but with two weeks notice Eric of Los Mal Hablados and Mephiskapheles let us know he could fill the spot. The downside was that on such short notice it would be a few hundred bucks, but we bit the bullet. We booked two flights, and one would send him back home from Canada (we'd meet up with one of our horn players on the US side).

<div>Fast forward to this week, and the Canadian airline went on strike the DAY Eric was to fly home. Multiple canceled flights, bookings, re-bookings, and a stressful period later we found a way to get him home - for over 1,300 DOLLARS. People were scrambling for bookings to get home with the strike, and the price gouging is bad. This also meant finding a way to get him into the US so he could fly from Buffalo NY and not Canada, while the rest of FRS headed to Montreal. We are posting this to attempt to recover that debt if possible - but we are otherwise all well and on our way. Thanks for reading.

<div>On Thursday, April 13, 2023, my nephew Ralph P Yarl was on his way to pick up his twin younger brothers from their friend's house a few blocks away from his house. He didn't have his phone. He mistakenly went to the wrong house, one block away from the house where his siblings were. He pulled into the driveway and rang the doorbell. The man in the home opened the door, looked my nephew in the eye, and shot him in the head. My nephew fell to the ground, and the man shot him again. Ralph was then able to get up and run to the neighbor's house, looking for help.

<div>Unfortunately, he had to run to 3 different homes before someone finally agreed to help him after he was told to lie on the ground with his hands up.

<div>Ralph Pual Yarl is a fantastic kid, and I am not just saying this because he is my nephew. He truly is. At school, he is a member of the Technology Student Association and Science Olympia Team. Jazz and competition band. He is a section leader in the marching band; a scholar and one of the top bass clarinet players in Missouri. He recently earned Missouri All-State Band recognition with an honorable mention. He plays multiple instruments in the metropolitan youth orchestra. He is a 2022 Missouri scholar academy alumni. Ralph can often be found with a musical instrument. He loves them all.

<div>Last summer, Ralph attended Missouri Scholar’s Academy, where he got a full college life experience. His goal is to attend Texas A&amp;M to major in chemical Engineering. When asked how he plans to get into this university, he said, “Well, if they have a scholarship for music or academics, I know I can get it.”

<div>Ralph's teacher and friends describe him as “ a kind soul,” “quiet,” “friendly,” “well-mannered,” “always willing to help,” “super smart,” and a “musical genius.”

<div>Ralph was looking forward to graduating high school and finally getting the opportunity to visit West Africa before starting college.
</div>

<div>Life looks a lot different right now. Even though he is doing well physically, he has a long road ahead mentally and emotionally. The trauma that he has to endure and survive is unimaginable. He is our miracle. We have heard these types of stories many times, and unfortunately, most black boys are not alive to get another chance.
