<div>Yesterday on 3/15/25 Saturday night. Alyssa “Sparrow” Treadwell returned home to an electrical fire that caused her home and shop to set on fire. She lost everything she ever owned including her puppy Arrow that didn’t make it out of the home. Alyssa is one of the biggest hearts that impacted everyone that ever had the opportunity to know her. She always did her best and worked her hardest to build her life and still help others. To lose everything that she valued in that fire including her puppy that she grown so much love for is devastating for her family. Her two children and herself is left without a home, while her daughter’s sweet 16 is only weeks away. This is a tragic time for everyone that knows and loves Alyssa. As much as she has been there for us all, it’s time for us to show her we can be there for her too. Every 1$ counts towards rebuilding her and her kids lives as much as possible. Let’s show her the village she has that always supported her.

But the mission is still the same. The grind is still the same. No cold elders on Navajo land is the goal. To achieve that it takes team work, git and dedication. Chizh For Cheii (which means: firewood for grandpa in Navajo) has begun its 9th season. CFC not only strives to help high risk elders with firewood, we also help out grandma too. Other volunteer CFC initiatives have included yard clean up and small home improvements repairs to winterize for the cold season along with firewood caretaking for the last remaining Navajo Code Talkers and their widow families. Chizh For Cheii began as an idea that turned into a movement of love, hope and inspiration. Last year’s season has never stopped for CFC, as our wood hauling ended covid began to hit Navajo land and communities hard. CFC members quickly transitioned to providing mutual aid in form of giving out hundreds of food boxes, water and cleaning supplies for weeks on end. For several months the CFC team has been preparing for its biggest wood hauling effort in its history. Chizh For Cheii has collaborated with many other non profits to become more efficient in aiding our communities hit by covid and prepare for the winter season. One of our biggest collaboration is with the great people at the Cottonwood Gulch Expeditions organization. During normal circumstances the Cottonwood Gulch provides a variety of services for youth with adventure based team building and life skills. The other big collaboration is with our creator who has provided these great opportunities to join forces with organizations like the Cottonwood Gulch. There organization sits on 550 acres of mountain land with endless amount of trees needing to be cleared. So we are helping one another by reducing fire risk, increasing the conservation of the land while providing a mind blowing amount of firewood for our elders. Nothing has been coincidental in our CFC journey this year. We’ve kept to ourselves and worked hard in silence during the first half of 2020. CFC reason behind that was to protect the peace of our crew and keep the work respectable and honorable. Even those we struggled financially we managed to get to make it through the year. Every week for the past four months we’ve been stockpiling firewood to prepare for distribution. There are no words to truly describe how much physical work goes into building these massive stockpiles. To imply conservation to the land, we must climb mountains sides, hand carry logs or bundles of wood from anywhere to 100 or 400 yards to our stockpile. The “Gulch” is a big area of land with much work to be done. Our group of volunteers have ranged at the most to 30 people but on average we have a solid 9 team members every week. We venture out three days a week and try to do our best to get as much done. We already begun several distribution days to areas like Tohajiilee NM, Pinedale, NM, Tohatchi NM, Lukachukai AZ, Church Rock NM, Shiprock NM and Thoreau NM with over 250 cords of firewood. For those that have been following and supporting CFC over the years, know that years before we’ve taken care of at least 150 elders and families. So already we have surpassed our yearly quota. Which means we’re going above and beyond this season. We collectively like to service all of the eastern and northern agencies of the Navajo reservation with firewood. But we will also help others in need in other parts of the reservation. To do this we need your help. On top of our yearly operational needs we need new equipment to helps us with efficiency and safety. One of the bigger goals is to purchase a much needed work truck that’s reliable and can handle the work duty. We also need a trailer to help move more firewood out to surrounding communities. We are always underfunded but with our creator we have also remained active. When those hard days hit, we are reminded that we are saving lives by keep our relatives warm during the winter. Every contribution and donation is a part of that effort to bring warmth to our elders and families in need. It’s uncertain if we will hit our go fund me goal but just like every season before, we have maximize every dollar to keep us going.

Our needs for this season are similar to the seasons before. Operational cost of fuel, food and repairs have been a daily need for our crew. <div>our go fund me as been blowing up recently thanks to all who believe in this direct action of keeping elders warm. Since June until September we’ve been operating underfunded. That’s 3 solid months of providing firewood to elders on our own before this go fund me was created.

<div>we have a long season head of us, our project is to stay in motion until March of 2021. So that’s 6 months of much needed funding which totals $42,000.

<div>Other cost is supplies, we need to stay warm ourselves along with reliable equipment such as chainsaws, axes, sledgehammers, wedges, safety gear like gloves, shields, masks and sanitation supplies. These items aren’t cheap, a new chainsaw alone can run from $700 to $1,200. So our team does need these items. It’s a combine cost of $7,000

<div>another cost we desperately need is a trailer at the very least. We were aiming for a work truck but the clock is ticking and we have tons of wood we need to move out. A new truck, would run the total of $20,000 but if we fix up a few of our older haulers it be about $3000 to maintenance them up to par. Plus getting a trailer to haul wood to residence on the Navajo Nation would be $4000 not included the registration and insurance. We’re hopeful to get something we can use.

Chizh For Cheii - Firewood for Elders

<div>When the war began, everything changed. Schools and kindergartens were damaged or destroyed, families were displaced, and children lost homes, loved ones, and the sense of safety every child deserves. Despite these unimaginable challenges, educators continued their mission. Even in tents and temporary shelters, they organized drawing sessions, games, and storytelling circles—simple activities that gave children moments of joy and hope in the middle of chaos.

<div>Today, this work continues with children in Gaza as well as with displaced children who are struggling to rebuild their lives in safer places. Educators and community volunteers are committed to providing safe spaces where children can learn, play, and find emotional relief. These safe spaces offer more than education—they are havens of healing, resilience, and belonging.

<div>To expand these efforts, we are seeking to raise the funds for five projects that directly serve children in Gaza and displaced children. These projects will provide:

<div>Sitawa Jamaa is a beloved elder who has served 43 years in prison for a crime that someone else confessed to committing. Despite the injustice of his imprisonment, Sitawa has devoted the past 43 years of his life to creating a safer, more humane prison system in California. These decades have seen a fight against solitary confinement, an interracial commitment to ending prison violence, and the creation of rehabilitative opportunities that were once unimaginable. Each of these advancements towards safety and justice is stamped with the name Sitawa Nantambu Jamaa.

<div><strong>Now, after four decades of activism, Sitawa is finally coming home. Due to a severe stroke in 2019, Sitawa requires 24/7 nursing care to survive. <div><strong>A Wrongful Conviction</strong>

<div>At age 22, with no prior criminal record, Sitawa was convicted of murder for the tragic death of a young man. Another person admitted to committing the crime and has consistently maintained that Sitawa was not present for it. Nonetheless, Sitawa remains incarcerated more than 43 years later.

</div>

</div>

<div><strong>An Activist and Peacemaker in Prison</strong>

</div>

<div>During Sitawa’s 43 years in prison, he has worked tirelessly to promote nonviolence, rehabilitation, and racial solidarity and justice within CDCR. Through written advocacy, administrative appeals, hunger strikes, and formal litigation, Sitawa has dedicated himself to dismantling prison violence. Even though his advocacy has repeatedly cost him his freedom – and at times, nearly his life – his devotion to justice remains unceasing.

</div>

<div>In 1982, less than a year into Sitawa’s incarceration, an officer shot him during one of the largest race riots in San Quentin history. From his political education, Sitawa understood that prisons capitalized on racial hostilities in order to oppress incarcerated people; as a result, he knew that the antidote to oppression was unity, not more violence. Thus, Sitawa responded to the race riot by creating the original New Afrikan Collective Think Tank, an organization dedicated to building bridges between racial groups in prison.

</div>

<div>By 1985, 26-year-old Sitawa had earned a reputation as a revolutionary in San Quentin, and was known for educating people about their rights, the Black freedom movement, and racial unity amongst incarcerated people. Prison officials responded by throwing Sitawa into solitary confinement. They classified his politics as gang ideology and claimed that he posed a threat to the institution. When Sitawa encouraged people to read Soledad Brother, the prison insisted it was gang indoctrination. When he wrote a letter to his sister celebrating Black August, the prison charged him with promoting gang activity. The message from CDCR was clear: drop your politics, or stay in solitary.

</div>

<div>Sitawa remained in solitary confinement for 30 years, because he refused to give up his belief that prison violence – whether inflicted by incarcerated people or prison officials – must come to an end. He fought for that belief from the depths of a windowless cell, where he was confined for over 22 hours a day. He fought for that belief when the prison buried him in disciplinary reports, hoping he would give up. And he fought for that belief even when it had been decades since he last touched his loved ones, or talked with them on the phone.

</div>

<div>California prisons are different than they were 43 years ago, in significant part because Sitawa never gave up. In 2011, when Sitawa was 26 years into solitary confinement, he helped organize a series of hunger strikes challenging CDCR’s use of long-term solitary confinement. Sitawa led the strikes alongside three other people in solitary, all of whom were from historically “rivaling” racial groups. The hunger strikes drew over 30,000 incarcerated participants state-wide and inspired <em>Ashker v. Governor of California</em>, a federal class action challenging prolonged solitary confinement, in which Sitawa was a named plaintiff. During this time, the prison repeatedly charged Sitawa with disciplinary infractions for his advocacy. Still, Sitawa refused to back down. A few years later, a landmark settlement agreement in <em>Ashker</em> dealt a fatal blow to indeterminate solitary confinement in California.

<div>The peaceful, interracial movement against indefinite solitary confinement confirmed Sitawa’s belief that racial unity could overcome oppression. In 2012, Sitawa and the other hunger strike leaders published the Agreement to End Hostilities, a groundbreaking call for the end of interracial violence in California jails and prisons – a call so powerful that it even catalyzed peacebuilding efforts in the streets.

<div>In 2015, Sitawa was released from solitary confinement as a result of the <em>Ashker </em>settlement, and was soon transferred to Salinas Valley State Prison, a notoriously dangerous and racially segregated facility. Confined within a prison so violent that officials had virtually cut off all rehabilitative programming, Sitawa was a recognized peacemaker. His reputation as an advocate for interracial peace preceded him, earning him trust and respect across many racial groups, as well as from prison officials. Associate Warden Rick Mojica recalls how Sitawa’s widespread influence allowed him to “resolve several issues amongst the inmate population that could have resulted in melees or riots. [Sitawa] had a way of resolving issues amongst the population without them having to resort to violence.”

<div>As a peacebuilder within Salinas Valley, Sitawa helped reduce violence so significantly that the prison reintroduced rehabilitative programming to the yard, creating avenues for education, healing, and growth that had once seemed inconceivable. Sitawa engaged deeply with these self-help programs and encouraged others to do the same, regularly holding study sessions to help others achieve higher education and rehabilitation. In the words of Associate Warden Mojica: “I believe [Sitawa] is a model inmate because he is the type of inmate the Department expects all inmates to be, and he sets a great example for other inmates to model.”

<div>While Sitawa’s influence on Salinas Valley State Prison was enormous, his impact was not confined to prison walls. In 2015, Sitawa was instrumental in establishing Life-CYCLE, the prison’s first program dedicated to keeping young men out of prison. Associate Warden Borla describes a seminar that Sitawa facilitated for the group:

<div>"[Sitawa] sat in an intimate setting with the youth in attendance and talked to each child about their goals in life and gave them tips to prevent a future of imprisonment. [Sitawa] fielded many difficult questions from the youth and he provided a positive, carefully crafted response to each question asked. [Sitawa] was the first inmate to interact with the youth on the day of the event and he did an excellent job calming the kids[’] anxiousness of being in a prison as well as making them feel comfortable in talking with inmates."

<div>Through his continuous dedication to the group, Sitawa became certified as a Life-CYCLE Coach, allowing him to establish and run the juvenile diversion program anywhere in California, both inside and outside of prison.

<div><strong>A Debilitating Stroke</strong>

</div>

<div>In 2019, Sitawa suffered a pontine hemorrhagic stroke when a blood vessel in his brainstem ruptured and bled into his brain. After the stroke, Sitawa could not move any part of his body except for his eyes, a condition called “locked-in syndrome.” While Sitawa’s survival was a miracle, the stroke caused devastating and long-term damage. More than three years after the stroke, and despite Sitawa’s best efforts to regain functioning, he remains unable to walk, stand, bathe, toilet, dress himself, or perform any other activities of daily living independently except for eating.

<div>Unfortunately, there is no meaningful chance of Sitawa ever returning to independent functioning. Nonetheless, we are grateful that he will spend the rest of his days surrounded by those who love and cherish him as a brother, uncle, friend, mentor, and elder.
