After nearly three months in detention, Betuel is finally free and back with his community. While his release is something we are incredibly grateful to celebrate, coming home also means rebuilding after months without being able to work, earn income, or take care of everyday responsibilities. Betuel is a hardworking member of Chicago's day laborer community. During the months he was detained, bills and expenses continued to accumulate, and he is now rebuilding the stability he had before his detention. We are raising $5,000 to support Betuel directly as he gets back on his feet. On August 1, 2026, beloved Edwin Jovanny Lopez Cornejo lost his life after being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He was only 39 years old. Edwin was a loving father, a devoted son, and a hardworking member of his community who had lived in New Jersey for more than 20 years. He was a man who cared deeply for his family, especially his young daughter, and worked every day to build a better future for those he loved. On June 18, 2026, Edwin was detained by ICE outside of his home and taken to Delaney Hall detention center in Newark, New Jersey. While in detention, Edwin was reportedly denied the consistent medical care and medications he needed to manage his diabetes, high blood pressure, and seizure disorder. This is when Oscar, Edwin's brother reached out to us. On the evening of July 31, Edwin called his mother. He told her that he was feeling very sick, that he could not feel half of his face or his right hand, and that he planned to request medical attention. He hoped he would receive the care he desperately needed. The next day, his condition worsened. Even though detention staff were aware that Edwin was ill, they did not act until after he collapsed. Later that evening, Edwin's mother received a heartbreaking phone call from University Hospital in Newark informing her that her son had died and asking her to come identify his body. This came as a shock because the detention facility never told Edwin’s mother or his attorney that Edwin was even at the hospital. Today, Edwin's family is facing an unimaginable tragedy. Along with overwhelming grief, they must now carry the financial burden of funeral and burial expenses while trying to support one another through this painful loss. Oscar, Edwin's brother, is asking our community to come together to help ease this burden. Urgent Help for Wilian’s Family During His ICE Detention On January 2026, Wilian was detained by ICE as he was leaving the Pasadena courthouse. That day changed his family’s life completely. What seemed like a simple situation turned into a heartbreaking separation that has left their home emotionally and financially fragile. Wilian is a hardworking, noble man devoted to his family. Since he was young, he has faced hardships and setbacks without ever giving up, starting from the bottom in the equestrian field and slowly working his way up. No matter how difficult things became, he always found a way to support his loved ones, even selling food when there was no other work. Generous and kind-hearted, he helps others even in his own hardest moments. Wilian is the father of three daughters. One of them, 16 years old, lives in Texas, and he helps her economically. His other two daughters, ages 5 and 11, live with his current partner, Mariela, in the Pasadena area. For them, their father was their sense of safety, joy, and stability. Since his detention, the girls have fallen into deep sadness, developing anxiety, depression, and constant fear. The girls are undergoing psychological therapy because their father’s absence has deeply affected them. At such a young age, they live with overwhelming fear of just walking outside. No child should have to live with that kind of fear. Mariela: A Mother Trying to Be Strong While Falling Apart Inside Mariela has been left to carry everything on her own: The emotional stability of her two daughters The financial responsibilities of the household The legal expenses And her own pain, anxiety, and exhaustion She has sought professional help because she is suffering from insomnia, loss of appetite, hair loss, anxiety attacks, and extreme stress. She goes to work every day with a heavy heart, knowing that if either of her daughters gets sick or has an emotional crisis, there is no one else who can help. A Financial Burden She Cannot Carry Alone Before Wilian’s detention, he and Mariela shared everything: the bills, the childcare, the responsibilities of the home. Now, Mariela is struggling on her own to pay for everything, including rent, food, bills, medical needs, legal fees, all basic needs. The situation is becoming increasingly difficult, and the family needs urgent support while they fight to bring Wilian home. Isaac Villegas is home after his recent second release from immigration detention in Adelanto, California. Isaac is a dedicated worker, community member, and civil rights advocate. After his unlawful ICE arrest while waiting for work last June, Isaac became a civil rights leader when he, along with other Latino workers, filed a landmark federal lawsuit challenging racial profiling. He has shown courage and leadership in standing up for justice. On April 16, Isaac was illegally arrested a second time by ICE. A federal judge ordered his immediate release after his lawyer challenged his arrest as retaliatory and unconstitutional, but the damage was done. Isaac lost his job because of his detention, and could now lose his housing if he isn't able to pay rent. Isaac is rebuilding his life after losing his job and is focusing on his health and stability. Orlando has been the heartbeat of his family. Today, that heart is missing. His wife, who has spent the last decade and a half as a dedicated homemaker, is now stepping into the sugar processing plant to pick up shifts just to keep the lights on. But wages from temporary shifts cannot cover the thousands of dollars needed for an immigration attorney to fight Orlando's case and bring him home.
