<div>In 1952 Nat became the first African-American to dance as a corps member in the U.S. Military’s Special Services. After serving in the Army he moved to NYC, became an original member of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and appeared in twelve Broadway shows. Nat was also one of the founders of New York’s “Theatre Row” on West 42nd Street: The former Nat Horne Musical Theatre (NHMT) was NYC’s first professional school that integrated acting, singing and dance, inspiring students from all over the world.

<div>Despite exemplary bodily health at 96, Nat has recently had hip replacement surgery. He is classified as legally blind and diagnosed with dementia, requiring 24-hour attendants. His long-term care has drained his savings. Nat gave generously to his students well into his 80’s, from preschoolers to Broadway performers. Now he needs our financial help.

Marcus became confused and disoriented and could not remember simple things like his name, age or basic things such as a cat or dog.He was sent to ICU for close monitoring and is being treated conservatively with the proper medications to treat the brain bleed.

<div>A few weeks ago, Anjene “AJ” Davis experienced a massive heart attack and is now waiting on a heart transplant. He needs our support to help cover necessities for him and his family as he recovers. AJ has been working tirelessly on the frontlines in South Carolina as a public education advocate, racial justice warrior, community leader and parent organizer. He is the founder of the Lowcountry Black Parents Association and co-founder of Pro-Truth South Carolina, a statewide coalition working to protect and expand the teaching of diverse and inclusive history. AJ is dearly loved and respected by many in South Carolina and nationally.

<div>On top of working full-time at the Charleston County School District, being a father, and serving as caregiver to his mother, AJ is constantly advocating for children and families so that they may have an improved quality of life. Among the issues he champions are fully funded and equitable public education for all, affordable housing, and a living wage. He serves his community by volunteering with numerous local organizations, his membership in the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, and his leadership on several boards. <div>Hi! Since 2019, we’ve been the nation’s only all black boys gymnastics team. We’re located in Jonesboro, Georgia, about 15 miles south of Atlanta. We are also the only gymnastics club in our entire county, which includes 7 cities.

<div>On April 30, 2025, in a City of Rochester public park, a white woman <a href="https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1BS18BAwr4/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">launched a racist and hateful verbal assault on a </a> defenseless 5-year-old Black child—who, according to reports, is also on the autism spectrum. She called him the n-word, and when confronted by a bystander, she didn’t back down. Instead, she repeated the slur multiple times and attempted to justify her actions by blaming the child. At no point did she show any remorse.

<div>Let us be clear: this was not a misunderstanding or a moment of poor judgment—this was a deliberate, racist, and threatening attack on a young Black child. Public parks should be safe, welcoming places for all children and families—not sites of hate and trauma.

<div>The <a href="https://www.naacprochestermn.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rochester Branch of the NAACP</a> is taking this matter with the utmost seriousness. <div>April 29 update: I started this GoFundMe five months ago after my friend and former journalism colleague Allison Quinn’s 8-year-old son Aedrik was diagnosed with a brutal neurodegenerative disorder, X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy. It’s rare, genetic, and very often fatal. Allison, recently unemployed and coping with progressive multiple sclerosis, needed resources to get Aedrik the best care possible and a shot at survival.

<div>Nearly 500 people donated, allowing Allison to bring Aedrik from Illinois to Minnesota, where one of the best specialists in ALD works, for treatment. He underwent a risky and grueling stem cell transplant, lost his hair and an awful lot of weight, and endured a series of truly horrible side effects.

<div>The good news is that Aedrik has nearly reached the end of the high-risk 100-day post-transplant period with no major complications, and we are hopeful that it will stall the progression of this disease. In the coming weeks, with any luck, Allison and Aedrik should be able to leave the Ronald McDonald House and go home — with plans to return to Minneapolis for frequent follow-up appointments.

<div>We have increased the goal on this GoFundMe because Allison and Aedrik need extra help to get through the next few months. Medical co-pays and travel expenses consumed more than $20,000 of the original donations, and Allison still had to keep up on rent and other bills while tending to Aedrik around the clock. In addition, she’s paying COBRA premiums of $2,000 a month on private health insurance because Medicaid won’t cover out-of-state treatment.

<div>Allison has started looking for a remote position with health benefits (know of anything?) but we are asking for donations to tide her over and pay for health insurance until she lands something. I have lost most friendships, had to drop out of University, and had to stop volunteering at the wildlife center hospital where I worked every Friday.

<div>I cried last Halloween thinking it was my last. I hate roller coasters but rode one a couple of years back with my brother (when I was still able to) because I wanted him to have that memory for when I was gone. I paid for extra medical treatments so my 2 best friends would have me at their weddings, I wrote my family letters, I made a will, I save every video my best friend sends me of her daughters, I told the ocean goodbye when I went to LA to see a specialist. I tell my family I love them every day, and every day at work I stop and take a moment to look around and tell myself that even though I did not do all the good that I wanted to do for animals and this earth, I am thankful for what I got to do in my time I had.

This also means if I purchase a new plan during this current enrollment period, I will run into the same issue. I do not work full time and cannot work full time due to my health, especially not long enough for Full-Time benefits to kick in. I am not married and I am older than 26 yrs old.

<div><strong>Why No Other Surgeon? -</strong> There are no feasible surgical options for me right now aside from Houston. Los Angeles refers to Houston because of the specialty levels. This specialty surgeon in Texas is the only surgeon who can accomplish what I medically need.

<div><strong>Why Over 100k? - </strong>The hospital needs $1,462 for my pre-op appointment and $96,443.51 for the operation. This does not include additional fees and costs such as added-on hospital fees, labs, anesthesia, post-op drug treatment, etc. The financial department told moreover the phone, there is no limit for an Out-of-Network, Out-Of-Pocket Maximum, so the hospital could potentially hold me accountable for an unlimited price point.

After overcoming his recent battle with LGL Leukemia, he is now diagnosed with <strong>MDS Cancer</strong>, and faces another bout with cancer of the bone marrow.

<div>Akili Ramsess, a dear friend and colleague to so many, lost her eldest son, the beautiful and talented Taraja, and three of her grandchildren - Taraja’s 13-year-old daughter Sundari and 8-week-old daughter, and 10-year-old son Kisasi - in a horrific traffic accident on Oct. 31.  We are not sure what her immediate needs are, but we know there will be many. Anyone who knows Akili knows that her greatest joys are her three boys and 10 grandchildren. Her love and devotion to her family knows no limits.

Akili Ramsess has suffered a devastating loss

<div>Hello all. I've been diagnosed with both lung and brain cancers, and am currently undergoing treatment - both chemo and now radiation.  My doc feels like they both can be beat!  Unfortunately, the co-pays for treatment have wiped out my savings -and my home is no longer insured due to needing a new roof- so I'm reaching out for help to cover both treatment costs and to put a non-leaking roof on our home. <div>Hi, my name is Alex. My mom, Samantha, is only 46 years old, but <strong>she is facing her <em>second </em>battle with cancer. </strong>

<div>I was only 11  years old, a 5th grader, the first time she had cancer. It was <strong>stage 1 breast cancer</strong><em> and she beat it</em>. 
</div>

<div>Now, I am 20 years old and going into my third year of college. On July 31st my mom was diagnosed with <strong>stage 3 bladder cancer. </strong>
</div>

<div>Anyone who knows my mom knows how strong she is. Not only has she beat cancer once and worked her way up from a waitress to general manager at her restaurant, but she raised two wonderful kids - my brother Thomas and I. My mom is one of the most resilient people I know. Despite this, we're scared. Stage 3 bladder cancer is much different from stage 1 breast cancer. She can't get chemo again, trials are too risky, so that leaves us with surgery. <strong>On September 7th my mom will be getting her bladder removed as well as a hysterectomy. </strong>The recovery period is about 10 weeks. That's 10 weeks without work and without pay. This 10-week period is not long enough to qualify for any federal aid, but it is enough time to leave my mom stressed about money when she should be focused on recovering.

<div>We know Jack as vibrant, fun, sarcastic, and a doting father of two. Currently, he is facing a literal life and death trial. Jack has chronic kidney disease and he needs a donor kidney. His beautiful daughter Saoirse volunteered to give one of her kidneys to her father, but with one kidney 20% smaller than the other, doctors determined she could not be a donor. Meanwhile, Jack is too ill to work and spends 3 days a week on dialysis. His disability was just terminated, and he is currently living with no income. Jack is a working artist, so this situation is especially difficult, and he needs our help. Please donate what you can to help him make ends meet and regain his health and vitality. Monetary donations are needed and appreciated, and anyone who is willing or knows someone willing to donate a kidney would be considered an angel on Earth. <div>Lyndsey was a very caring, loving and thoughtful person. She was very vocal about her love for her husband and son, as she would call Delano #1 and Delano #2. She was hands down a GREAT mother, astronomical support to her son's future. Her son had a 5 year plan at just 5 years old. Lyndsey was there for all of Delano #2's milestones. Most recently, his 18th birthday and high school graduation. We are deeply saddened that she will not be there in the physical for more.

<div>Let us not forget Lyndsey's humbleness. I kept in touch with Lyndsey pretty often and we had a good relationship. And though I do not use Twitter myself, I was shocked to see the following she has. I had no idea, she never mentioned it. She never mentioned she was doing all this good work, touching people's lives across the country. The outpouring of messages and condolences from friends has been overwhelming and appreciated. It says a lot about a person when people who have never met you, want to leave a message about how you impacted their lives.

Lyndsey Vargas-Lamin

<p><br />   Nikki needs a new hip, and she has been gracious enough to let us set up a fundraiser to help her get the surgery she desperately needs to stop complete pelvic collapse. Hannah and I wanted to do this for a variety of reasons. I remember my mom struggling with pain before her hip replacement and how much of her life she got back after. Now that she’s gone, I can’t imagine not getting that extra time. I didn’t want someone like Nikki, who has molded her life around being a caregiver, not getting that same opportunity just because of where she lives. Hannah wanted to help because Nikki is a treasure and an inspiration. Also, she knows how limiting pain can be. Her Ankylosing Spondylitis causes massive issues with her spine and hips, causing her to occasionally rely on a cane and eventually look at hip replacements herself. She couldn’t sit idly by letting Nikki suffer when she could do something.
</p>

<p><br />   Nikki’s been in pain since 2018 and had a hip replacement on her left in Feb 2020. Unfortunately, once it healed, her right hip began to deteriorate. She went from expecting a return to her everyday life to dealing with pain in every step and severely limited activities. To go from being the head of a "ponderosa " actively centered as chief cook, creator of laughs, dryer of tears, and coordinator of holidays, to not being able to pick up her grandbaby, garden, work out or even stand long enough to cook the dishes she was famous for, for her extended family &amp; friends. A self-professed “southern Black grandma who carries forth the food of my family since before Emancipation.” To have that beautiful and full life ending, and to be essential homebound, is a heartbreaking loss for her and her family.<br /><br /><br />   In all that pain, Nikki still manages to care for her beloved 99-year-old mother. She has always been a caregiver. Her first child, A daughter, was born prematurely at 1lb 9oz, medically fragile, and severely handicapped. Despite over 20 hospitalizations and three brain surgeries, she died. Nikki didn’t turn that loss into a negative but blessed us all by turning her pain into a career of helping. Starting with Maternal and child health administration, Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention, Pediatric AIDS, recovering addicts, low-skilled and high-risk ex-offenders....finally finished her career teaching psychology.
</p>

<p><br />   Genuine caregivers understand the civics of care for their fellow Americans as well. The ones that care back and even those who’ve spent their lives not caring. Nikki is one of those genuine caregivers and has worked to make it better for all of us. After voting in every local, state, and national since 1976, no matter where she lived, even voting in the last election on crutches, she faces the genuine prospect of losing that as well. Serious stuff coming from a woman who was 7 when she first marched for Civil rights and went with her parents the first time they were able to vote in the Jim Crow era.
</p>

<p><br />   She tried tolerating the pain as it got progressively worse and worse, and her world narrowed with every pain-filled step. Unfortunately, referral for evaluation ultimately determined she had bone on bone arthritis, and there was no longer blood flow to her hip. Pelvic collapse is imminent without this surgery. It turned this from a 24 HR hospital stay and three months recovery to a month-long hospital stay and exponentially more recovery and therapy. Not to mention the massive increase in cost and the genuine chance of a significant decrease in quality of life after.
</p>

<p><br />   Undaunted, she took the news in stride, steadied herself to face a second surgery, and applied to have it covered by insurance, only to find out her retirement income surpassed the state's $1,500 limit. Faced with an out-of-pocket bill of over 50 thousand, she still didn’t give up. Using every means available, she managed to get that bill down to 13,000 with an additional 2,000 for aftercare. An astonishing feat but still out of reach.
</p>

Nikki’s New Hip

<div>My mother awoke the night of Wednesday, September 1 to the sound of gushing water. She stood up from bed and realized that the water was quickly rising gushing out of the toilet and through the doors nearly reaching her chest. She first tried getting out of the apartment via the front door but because of the strength of the water and the fact that the basement had already flooded the door would not open. She could not open the  window of her bedroom herself so she called out for help. A neighbor heard her and was able to rip off the screen to lift and carry her out through the window. All of our neighbors in the apartment complex had already evacuated and stood in the parking lot. No one realized that my mother was still inside the building. Had it not been for Allah waking her up, I fear for what she may have slept through...

<div>Because their apartment is located in a basement, the destruction of Hurricane Ida was particularly devastating. Nearly all of their life long possessions destroyed-obliterated-crushed. <span style="font-size:1.0625rem;">The only possessions that remained untouched were the prayers on the walls and their Quran. <br /><br /></span><span style="font-size:1.0625rem;">This couldn't have come at a more devastating time as my Ummi is also just recovering from an 8-hour surgery to repair her trachea that she had a few weeks prior to the hurricane.</span>

<div>My Ummi and Abu are currently residing in a hotel for the moment so this fundraiser is to help them with moving expenses, finding a new residence, and replacing furniture and clothes. I will also say my Ummi and Abu are still in great spirits and extremely thankful to be alive. They realize and have reiterated to me that these are only lost possessions and they still have their faith-each other-their lives.
