<div>At 4.00 am on 8 November 2024 Veronica and her husband Nate and their three school age kids, Amy, Isaac and Evelyn, were burnt out of their extremely modest little house at Melton Mowbray by an electrical fire. They lost everything except their night clothes.

<div>At the time a fundraiser made almost $38,000 to help them replace personal and living items and to buy an old bus, in which they have lived, summer and winter, since early last year.
</div>
<div>Yes the building was insured, but woefully under insured, with no hope of giving them back a  warm home they could live in. 
</div>
<div>After 12 months of red tape, work was authorised by their insurer on a kit home, but the money has run out and they are still living in the bus next to the roofed frame of the kit build. 
</div>
<div>They are doing what they can themselves, installing windows and cladding, but there is so much more needed to give them a warm living space for this winter.
</div>
<div>I know of no more beautiful, caring or deserving people. Veronica runs a small online business making soap, and she fosters cats, but she and the kids have significant health needs and the fact is that they live in poverty.

<div>I would love to write one big fat cheque but am also helping others with housing and other needs at the moment.

Family of 5 lose everything in house fire

<div>As many of you are aware, last year the City of Yarra approved a massive

<div>development next door to Atlas Vinifera on Church Street. Despite the project not
</div>
<div>conforming with the Design Development Overlay guidelines of 15m (its height is over 20m, plus a further rooftop terrace and services level), nor was adequate regard given to the impact upon the neighbourhood's amenity, safety and traffic - particularly, in regard to Ben Alexander Reserve - this sailed through council despite many residents' objections.
</div>

<div>As a result, the residents' formed Friends of Ben Alexander Reserve (FOBAR), to try to reduce the scale of the development to fit in with the DDO guidelines. The residents have engaged a town planner and have applied to VCAT to have the planning permit altered to reduce the height, the bulk and the impact on the neighbourhood. Initial negotiations with the developer were unsuccessful, and we now have to go to a VCAT hearing to fight for our neighbourhood, at a huge cost. The hearing is currently scheduled for early May.

<div>There is so much soul in this little pocket of Richmond, and we want that preserved, rather than having a massive development overshadowing our beautiful little park, the historic workers cottages that surround it, and the great businesses in this strip. It will impact everything that makes our neighbourhood special, and will risk the safety of the park with increased traffic in streets that are entirely inappropriate for such the planned size of the project. If this proceeds as currently approved, it will set a precedent for further developments along Church Street that exceed the council's own guidelines.

Help fight inappropriate development in Richmond

<strong>WE’RE APPEALING TO YOU... BECAUSE GOVERNMENT IS FAILING US</strong><br /><br />It costs money to destroy the environment and it costs money to protect it. Our law in its wisdom allows destruction by the public purse and protection at private expense. <br />And so community groups working for ecological justice must fundraise. Here is why KORS' campaign deserves your support.<br /><br />This appeal is to kick-start a <strong>LEGAL FIGHTING FUND for the TREES<br /><br /></strong>Another route can still be considered. <br /><br />All funds will be used to pay legal costs and gather independent expert opinions on what is the least impact route.<br /><br />Please help us to defend the environment in this challenge the flawed and hopelessly out-of-date environmental impact assessment legislation that underpins this and all of the Victorian Government’s decisions on environment. <br /><br />It is proposed to sacrifice all the trees and country to allow traffic to travel faster for 12 kilometres. <br /><br />Since its beginning KORS has advocated for an independent and open route review. We continue to do so. Also, we have found a route shadowing the existing highway that we think would be the most environmentally and culturally fitting and offers the least environmental impact. We want this tested by a proper review.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.fixfreewayfiasco.org">www.fixfreewayfiasco.org</a><br /><br /><br />The Victorian Supreme Court has found that destruction caused by widening of the Western Highway is legal. Subsequently KORS Inc took legal advice and decided as a community to challenge the decision in defence of the natural and ancient cultural environment. That is, we appealed that decision.<br />But of course, the price of justice is high. Even with an amazing pro bono lawyer, associated expenses—the printing of court books; the lodging of Freedom of Information requests; applications to be heard in Court—all are far from cheap.<br /><br />Looking at the updated information, we do not to accept a deviation from the existing highway is necessary. It would bulldoze carve scrape and explode through natural countryside for 5.7 kilometres. The path until now has been somewhat sleepy. So sleepy that now it sustains 90 precious large old gumtrees of which many are 500 years old; we find threatened habitat and ecosystems. Orchids, spring soaks, and the Golden Sun Moth. The eastern Djab Wurrung cultural precinct would have the road's bridge-ramp through it, lifting cars high enough from the natural terrain and close enough to the magnificent hollowed birthing tree that passengers could lob their Macca’s trash into the hollow from their windows as they sail up to Ararat at the higher speed limit of 110 kph.  The road would be 50 metres wide, and in places run along a trench cut 15 metres deep. <br /><br />This ridiculous law pretending to protect the environment is just a permit system for destruction, pushing climate closer to unlivable and species closer to extinction while enabling mega-projects funded by the public purse. If we succeed we will establish precedent and begin to turn around the ship of corporate short-termism, and give the Victorian environment half a chance in the twenty-first century.

The  legislation to stop Aboriginal women being imprisoned for non payment of fines has been passed. Thank you for all your support. This is historical - we have all been waiting for these draconian laws to end for decades. <strong>Go Fund Us… High 5s and Hand Outs</strong><br /><br /><br />We’ve been operating one of Hobart’s best live music venues (or the best as we see it) for over twelve years. We’ve fed you, hydrated you and shown you some good times and great nights (and some sore mornings). But sadly, now we need some help.<br /><br /><br />You’ve been looked after with cheap cheap beers, cheap shows, free shows, free bingo &amp; krackieoke for YEARS. We’ve provided a safe and friendly environment where everyone can come and have a drink and a dance or just chain smoke yard darts out back.<br /><br /><br />The Briz has supported bands that have had their first gigs, and for some their last shows. We’ve nurtured bands to see them mature to worldwide fame, we’ve seen generations of punters come, have a great time and for some to grow up and move on, or others who are still partying with us today. <br /><br /><br />There have been a heap of fundraisers over the years for many great and worthy causes, and this one is very close to our hearts ‘cause it is our hearts. We’ve put our blood, sweat, beers ‘n’ tears into this place. We’ve loved and lost and fought and won and lost out. Now we’re fighting to keep the doors open and to ensure we keep the rock ‘n’ roll alive.<br /><br /><br /><br />* * * * * * * *<br /><br /><br />Whilst we do not know the final dollar value on how much this will all cost, we know it’s a huge investment!!! This is an old building that needs work anyway but the old girl has plenty of life left in her. We guestimate the renos and upgrades will cost more $100,000 but we won’t know an exact figure until everything is done and dusted. The difference in classification between hotel and live entertainment venue is harsh as when it comes to the safety features required. And because we have upstairs it’s even more so. There have been thousands of band members and friends who have crashed out or partied on upstairs over the years as well as the awe and wonder of Grimoire in some of the winter years past and the scares (and maybe wee puddles left) of the Haunted House. To keep upstairs running and compliant each room, all ten of them, and the hallway that runs through them needs upgrades. And new walls and doors to be built/installed to ensure that if there was a threat of fire everyone, upstairs and down, would be safe.<br /><br /><br />As for downstairs, some of what needs to be installed will hopefully never but used but is required to be there. New exhaust systems in the windows and/or skylight in case of smoke, the real kind, not the silly fake stuff. Upgraded fire alarm systems, new exit door and lighting are needed as well. An upgrade with the most practical benefit will be the installation of a wheelchair accessible toilet and permanent wheelchair access into the pub! There are some issues as the building is Heritage Listed but we’re working with designers to make this happen.<br /><br /><br />And it’s not just the costs of the new gear needed, it’s the labour of all the tradies that will be in to make these changes - brickies, sparkies, engineers, painters, locksmiths, builders and more. The place will be a high vis party for weeks.<br /><br /><br />We’d also like to be able to recompense staff, security, promoters and bands who have or will have to lose out until this can be rectified. It’s not just us personally suffering through this tough time, it’s the full Brisso team/family and we don’t want people to miss out. The show will go on but we’ll be hitting pause on the banging setlist for a little while.<br /><br /><br />As with all business, the bills will roll in even if the rock ‘n’ roll isn’t happening.<br /><br /><br />We know that this is a lot of money needed and whilst we’ve been setting aside our own funds in preparation, we’ll need help. The Orange-bellied Parrot is critically endangered, and with a wild adult population with fewer than 15, it is one of the most threatened birds in the world.<br /><br />A vital part of the recovery program has been the involvement of volunteers who have observed the birds and collected important information each year since 1992 at Melaleuca in south west Tasmania.  Volunteer observers have also conducted searches along the Tasmanian west coast and Bass Strait Islands to find birds on the northern migration (March-May).<br /><br />My name is Mark Holdsworth and I have been involved with the Orange-bellied Parrot Recovery Program since 1980. My goal is to raise at least $30,000 to support our amazing volunteers who work so hard on Orange-bellied Parrot projects in Tasmania. <br /><br />I’m calling on everyone who cares about the Orange-bellied Parrot and the importance of volunteer involvement in Threatened Species programs to continue to contribute to this campaign so volunteers are able to continue their important work and receive the support they need. By contributing to this important cause I will ensure that information about our precious bird continues to be shared to everyone.<br /><br />My target for the 2019/20 season is to support the autumn migration surveys. Comprehensive searches have not been conducted for over a decade and we need to get as many people as possible looking for birds so we can learn what their requirements are during migration. Funding will help pay for observers to travel to remote areas including off-shore islands, training and field supplies. <img class="not-resizable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/27234486_1516851941.0483_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" /><br />Five months ago we bought Gormanston Road Store with the intention of providing employment to former refugees and asylum seekers who have settled in the local area and introducing Tasmanians to the delicious food of Afghanistan.  It was a small, dated takeaway shop and we have been renovating and trying to turn it into a fresh, friendly place for Moonah's multicultural community to eat.<br /><br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/27234486_1516851788.0541_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" /><br />Five months on, we have had a number of major equipment breakdowns  including our commercial grill which is not repairable, the tandoor oven that we bought second hand was not approved for installation and we are in desperate need of new signage, better seating and if possible some new point of sale equipment so our staff who are still learning English can use the till.<br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/27234486_1516851816.0884_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" /><br />So to meet our business goals we need to upgrade existing equipment and buy some new pieces.  <br /><br />Currently we employ 6 staff on a casual basis and if we get our equipment in place we can increase this number.  <br /><br />Its incredibly hard for former refugees and asylum seekers  to find ongoing employment in Tasmania and so many just leave to re-settle in Melbourne or Sydney.<br /><br />  We want to help keep them here by offering them ongoing employment and on the job training.<br /><br />If we have a working tandoor oven we can serve delicious naan with all of our meals and also sell it to the local community.  This would give another person a few hours of employment every day!<br /><br />So if you would like to help us, please make a donation to our campaign.<br /><br />Thank you so much for your help.<br /><br />The team at Gormanston Road Store

Hi Everyone,<br />Nearly three weeks ago my man decided he needed to leave. After 30 years of being with him, I find myself alone. At the moment we have a mediation process to work through. I am hoping that we can work things out but for the timebeing I need some help. I have a lease that runs to April and am in a position where I can't pay the full rent.<br /><br />My Son who is seventeen is currently doing a couple of summer University subjects and needs the security of a home to get through the exams that are coming up. I don't want to put him in a situation where he has no stability and is homeless.<br /><br />Over four years ago I fell over and seriously hurt my knee and hip. Apart from suffering 2 blood clots in the lungs I have a suspected tear in my hips and osteoarthritis. This severely limits the type of work I can do.<br /><br />At this moment I am getting a website together to sell my artwork. Hopefully it will help bring in some extra money in the future. <br /><br />Giving my son a stable home is my main priority while I find a way to bring in more income.
