<div>I lived this beautiful dream for a moment. And I dared to settle in and accept my favorite place on earth, my only safe space, as mine. I grew to love Altadena and all the wild creatures just outside my door. And I cannot imagine our—all indoor creatures included—lives elsewhere. Our true family, our community is here. I’m broken and going through the motions each day.

<div>Altadena is a post-apocalyptic burn zone you can’t comprehend until you’ve seen it in person. My grandmother’s ALF burned to the ground, as did nearly all of my friends’ and neighbors’ homes. “Mom” lost everything and after my dad’s sudden passing last September, the fire trauma is taking its toll on us both.

<div>Restaurants, shops, the hardware store, gas stations, public spaces, historic buildings—all ash. My home remains uninhabitable, surrounded by the rubble of my neighborhood and street. The wood beams  supporting my roof burned; a plexiglass window melted; glass doors cracked; solar panels fried; walls are smoke damaged, 1/2" of toxic ash covers my entire house and everything I own. I lost all electronics, clothing, furniture, appliances, books, etc to smoke damage. The stench is unreal. My house is so damaged it is unclear if my home needs to come down to the studs, foundation, or if everything is compromised. “Still standing” means little. What is clear is that I will not be able to go home anytime soon and it may be years.

<div>Notices remain posted around the area regarding toxins &amp; hazards. No one should enter without using full PPE—including NIOSH N95 or P100 respirators, goggles, gloves, booties, tyvek suits or other items to cover every inch of skin due to expected heavy metals, asbestos etc in the ash and VOCs (many items not measured in AQI) in the air. Initial testing inside my home shows &gt;10x EPA allowed levels of lead contaminating my property.

<div>I was sick for weeks following the fire with just 30 min smoke exposure. Even now, I cannot breathe in the area much less inside my own walls due to severe, obvious smoke damage. I leave with the area with headaches, body aches despite full PPE.  My cat has asthma and birds—including mine—have extremely delicate air sacs. Exposure could kill him.

<div>Regardless of when SCE restores the electrical grid (they’ve cut lines and must now bury them), when my gas meter is reinstalled (currently still ripped out), when usable water (which is at continual risk of recontamination in the burn scar) flows, I cannot begin to restore/rebuild my home until the surrounding neighborhood is cleared of toxins that will continue to recontaminate the area. I also need the funds to even start planning and to survive until I can finally go home.

<div>The endless traumas and financial hits of surviving cancer, an adulthood of managing chronic health issues, education/training and early career, COVID as a hospitalist, moving and taking on an elderly loved one’s needs, recent extended loss of income with rising debt, two high speed collisions resulting in totaled cars and a head injury, deaths and loss, the unexpected expenses we all encounter… have been overwhelming. Yet I was certain, as a person with a skillset and stubbornness, everything was about to turn around. I’d finally pay down debt, commit to a forever job, and reach security I’ve never felt. I’ve done the seemingly impossible before.

<div>But my life blew up on January 7, 2025. Nothing is normal. Nothing feels safe. I now have the equivalent of 2 full-time jobs outside of work in managing recovery. I’m doing this on my own and  without the support net of savings, a partner or family who can help. Not even my career is secure at this point with healthcare having devolved into this American mess. <em>(Though I am grateful for the wonderful per diem work I’ve found locally. This is the job to hang onto.) </em>I was struggling pre-fire am now am afraid all of the time. At times, I’m completely paralyzed, overwhelmed with tasks and worry.

<div>I've accepted that I simply cannot recover from this without help. I cannot do this alone. And the resources aren’t there. I was forced to buy California Fair Plan, as no one would insure my home. It won’t cover the full cost of rebuild much less remediating the property, replacing all of my personal contents, landscaping, fencing, or the ADU I’ll likely need to build to live in for a while. There’s no guarantee that they will provide what is owed. I’ve not seen a penny despite repeatedly hearing “total loss”—on personal property and even the “standing” house due to extent of fire and smoke – and am now facing needing to hire an insurance attorney.

<div>To make matters worse, LA County marked my house as “no damage” preventing me from qualifying for grants. FEMA are not assisting with housing or other needs. A complex set of circumstances mean I cannot obtain SBA loans for rebuild, mitigation, or refinancing at a lower rate. Many of us are not getting mortgage relief despite what you hear. The most we are getting is a 4 month forbearance that will end in a balloon payment or principalized interest at the end.  I will soon be paying rent on top of my mortgage. <em>(Thank goodness for friends housing me at present.)</em> And private student loans like all of my medical school debt get no relief in general. They didn’t care when I had cancer or made no money during residency and they don't care now.

<div>We are <a href="https://www.instagram.com/nocanyonhills/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NO Canyon Hills</a>: a community of plant lovers, wildlife advocates, rural land stewards, preservationists, civic scientists, residents, and allies, who have joined forces to demand a subsequent Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for 'Canyon Hills', a proposed luxury gated development of 250+ lots in the Verdugo Mountains in Tujunga.

<div>The development was approved almost 20-years ago on outdated information and threatens protected wildlife, including a young mountain lion known as #LaTunaPuma.

NO Canyon Hills: Save the Verdugo Mountains

<div>Our dear friend and colleague, Dr.Stephanie Hart, informed us that her husband, Alain, passed away unexpectedly on March 29th, 2023. Her loss is devastating and unimaginable and there are no words that can truly console someone in a tragedy like this. We have created this GoFundMe fundraiser to provide support for Stephanie and her daughter, Gillian, as they try to process this grief by assisting with the many costs that occur after a loved one passes. Stephanie just recently completed treatment for breast cancer in 2022 and had only recently returned to practice after being on disability for an extended period. In addition, during the efforts of the EMS response, extensive water damage was sustained to their home. We can not fathom trying to manage these costs, in addition to suddenly becoming the sole income earner of the household. Through this GoFundMe fundraiser, we are hoping to provide some financial stability for Stephanie and Gillian while they process this overwhelming change in their lives.

I’m Jerry Bryant host and founder of JBTV a music tv show out of Chicago  for over 35 years. Produced over 9,800 hour long episodes non stop featuring music from all over the world. Artists like Smashing Pumpkins, RadioHead, BTS, The Joy Formidable, Jeff Buckley and thousands more all have performed on JBTV.  But Covid-19 hit and changed the JBTV show, forcing the closing of the JBTV studios.  Now JBTV continues from  my home tv studio.  But building a full tv studio in a condo has taken its toll. Expenses have been non-stop and Covid-19 stopped all tours thus only Zoom interviews.  With the lack of income I desperately need to keep JBTV going but that needs a home. <p>My name is Susie Rowley and I am fundraising for my brother, Scott Morrow. As many of you know, Scott was involved in a random act of violence in Chicago on June 20th. Scott was struck by a bullet in the back and has sustained major injuries because of it. He was rushed to emergency surgery at Mt. Sanai Hospital where he lost his spleen and one kidney. The bullet also struck his stomach, abdomen, and pancreas.

<p>He survived, thank God. He is in recovery now but will have a long road ahead of him. He has already had some setbacks with infections, bleeding, discharge, etc. and he will likely have troubles for a while. He will continue to monitor for infections and will need to be very careful since he has no spleen. He will also need to monitor the pancreas to ensure it is working properly in the future.

<p>Again, we are so thankful he is still here but he will have a long road ahead to ensure he stays healthy. Medical bills will begin piling up and we wanted to start this fundraiser to help him out. On June 9th, 2021  Angel was on his way home when he was involved in a tragic motorcycle accident. The motorcycle that he rode burst into flames on impact. He is now in critical condition fighting for his life. Angel is currently suffering from 2nd and 3rd degree burns on 93% of his body as well as a few broken bones. <p>On December 15, 2020 Myon's life sentence was commuted to 20 years, 18 years of which he has already served, to be released immediately under supervision. This was not the pardon he deserves to be fully exonerated, but it is a start and means Myon was able to be released from prison that night to join his family. Life after release for Myon Burrell

On Monday, August 31, 2020, Detroit Will Breathe and fourteen individuals filed a federal lawsuit against the City of Detroit, Mayor Duggan, and Chief Craig. Detroit Will Breathe is represented by attorneys Jack Schulz and Amanda Ghannam of Schulz Law PLC, William Goodman and Julie Hurwitz of Goodman Hurwitz PLC, and Sean Riddell of the Riddell Law Firm.<br /><br />The City, through the Detroit Police Department, has continuously violated demonstrators’ First Amendment right to protest, Fourth Amendment right to be free from excessive force, unlawful arrest, and punitive conditions of detainment; and the right to be free from state-sponsored retaliation for conveying a message of racial justice under 42 U.S.C. 1981.<br /><br />This lawsuit prioritizes injunctive relief for all demonstrators, i.e., a court-ordered stop to abusive police practices including unlawful arrests, beating demonstrators with batons and shields, placing demonstrators in chokeholds, tear-gassing and pepper-spraying demonstrators, shooting demonstrators with rubber bullets, and more. <br /><br />The plaintiffs are also putting pressure on the defendants by seeking damages and financial compensation for injuries and legal expenses.<br />*The team of volunteer attorneys with the National Lawyers Guild is trying to establish the infrastructure to talk to other people with potential claims. Once this structure is in place, DWB will be sharing how other demonstrators can seek relief through legal proceedings. This lawsuit does not prevent individuals from seeking other council or retaining other attorneys outside the NLG. <br /><br />You can view the full complaint and motion for temporary restraining order <a href="http://www.detroitwillbreathe.info/assets/documents/2020-08-31-DWB-Complaint.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Here</a>  and <a href="http://www.detroitwillbreathe.info/assets/documents/2020-08-31-DWB-Motion-for-TRO-and-PI.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Here</a> . <br /><br />Detroit Will Breathe is asking supporters to donate to help with legal expenses, specifically, the costs of litigation. These costs can be high and will likely include, for example (not an exhaustive list):<br /><br />- Filing fees for court filings: for example, it costs $400 just to file a complaint.<br />- Costs of discovery: our attorneys will be taking the depositions of Mayor Duggan, Chief Craig, and the individual police officers named as defendants, some of whom are yet to be identified. More defendants may also be added as the case proceeds. Our plaintiffs will also have their depositions taken. We will have to pay court reporters for the deposition transcripts to be used in briefing and trial; which typically cost around $800-$1500 per each individual.<br />- Expert witnesses: To seek a court-ordered injunction against DPD’s abusive and unlawful tactics, we will have to employ expert witnesses which can also cost money.<br /><br />This GoFundMe has been set up separately from Detroit Will Breathe’s General Fund in an effort to be transparent.<br /><br />The money in the General Fund has already been used for other types of expenses, for example: water and snacks for participants of our marches, rent for our meeting space, gas for support cars, supplies for street medics, printing costs for flyers, megaphones and other audio equipment, etc. <br /><br />While litigation and legal costs are certainly part of the effort  to sustain and empower the movement as a whole, we want to be sure everyone is able to have as much information as possible before deciding to make their donation to a legal cause. <br /><br />We have decided to temporarily disable the donation button on the General Fund in order to focus on raising money for litigation costs exclusively. Should the DWB organizing team determine more funds are needed for general expenses, we will turn the donate button back on. Should our legal team determine more money is needed for litigation, we will raise the goal accordingly on this campaign. All funds raised on this campaign will be deposited into the Detroit Will Breathe organizational bank account, then transferred to our lawyers to pay expenses. <br /><br />If anyone has any questions about the lawsuit, please feel free to reach out to DWB leadership or on social media. Detroit Will Breathe Federal Lawsuit Fund

On January 8th, my brother Jose's condo caught on fire in River Grove. <br /><br />For those who know my brother Jose, he is a hard worker, a dedicated father, and a talented musician. He and his family (Loly and Ingrid) lost everything included his loved guitar, just in one night. His family was displaced in the night without anything.  This fire destroyed not only their unit but also all their memories. <br /><br />As Jose and his family give us kindness and love, this is our chance to hold them and give them back. We all know that Covid has affected our lives and given us the most challenging time, especially in finances.
