For Monique and Biscuits and Jams

Monique is Timeko's sweet friend, and right now Monique's business, Biscuits and Jams, is fighting to stay afloat after one heartbreak after another. This has been such a difficult year. Monique has been grieving the loss of her mother while also facing the pain and stress of her daughter's tragic accident. On top of that, the air conditioner went out at the first restaurant, creating yet another major setback at a time when payroll is due and both of Monique's businesses are already under water. The weight of personal loss and business struggles all at once has been overwhelming.

This fundraiser is being created to help Monique keep Biscuits and Jams going through this crisis. Donations will help cover the broken air conditioner, payroll, and other urgent expenses needed to keep the business running day to day. Any support will mean the world to Monique as she tries to carry so much at once and keep moving forward. Please consider giving if you can, and just as importantly, please keep Monique, her family, and her businesses in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly hard time.

Help Monique Save Biscuits and Jams

At Memphis Allies, we talk a lot about courage, sacrifice, and showing up for people when it matters most. One of our own—an exceptional staff member who puts his life on the line every single day to keep our community Safe, Free, and Alive—is now facing a heartbreaking moment no one can prepare for.

On Wednesday, he lost his mother. She was his anchor, his “why,” and the person who pushed him to keep going even when the work got heavy. She recently became ill and secured an insurance policy in May, but because the policy is less than two years old, the funeral home cannot accept it. That means the full cost of her funeral falls entirely on him, right in the middle of his grief.

This is a man who has stood in the gap for countless families… who has rushed into situations most people run away from… who has shown compassion, bravery, and commitment on levels that truly embody the spirit of Memphis Allies. Now, he needs us. We’re asking our community—those who believe in healing, hope, and honoring those who serve—to help us raise the funds needed to give his mother the respectful homegoing she deserves. No amount is too small. Every contribution helps lift a burden off his shoulders and reminds him that he is not alone. Let’s surround him with the same love and support he gives to others every single day. Thank you for giving from your heart.

Sergeant Sam Lilley of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is currently recovering from a duty accident at Regional One Medical Center. His motorcycle was hit by a vehicle when he was on his way to help another deputy. Sergeant Lilley’s life was saved with CPR on the scene, but he is still on life support and in a medical coma to help him heal. He has a long road to recovery ahead of him.

Anyone who knows Sam will tell you he’s a man who will give you the shirt off his back. He is always there for a friend or a stranger with a kind word and a smile. As a deputy, he has taught a generation of young officers how to do their job with professionalism, kindness, and compassion.

Prayers and well-wishes are deeply appreciated, but we are also planning ahead for Sam’s recovery. Once he is out of the woods medically, he will have a long way to go before he is ready to come back to work. Any donation you can make will go a long way to relieving stress from SGT Lilley and his family during his recovery.

Heal the Hood Foundation of Memphis is a not-for-profit organization that uses the arts and media science to enact change in Memphis and surrounding areas that are heavily populated by youth crime and violence. Our current location is in the Hickory Ridge Mall, which is located in one of the poorest zip codes in the city of Memphis. We run extensive arts programs which include the Evolution School of the Arts, Legacy Arts Summer Camp, and the Phases Mentoring Program.

Two weeks ago, during our next-to-last day of camp, a storm arose outside that literally flooded our entire space while the children were gathering. This ruined our entire facility. We are in the process of relocating our After School Program to another spot in the mall, but the company that installed the roof has to decide which contractor is responsible for the damage.

You can be part of a resounding movement to RALLY for REGGIE B, a 58-year-old courageous warrior fighting a relentless rare genetic condition, Neurofibromatosis (NF). This disorder caused a 49-pound tumor on his left leg, tumors disfiguring his face, and many tumors growing on the nerves inside and outside his body. Tragically, attempts to operate on these tumors in the past have proven fatal to his family members, claiming the lives of both a beloved brother and a cherished nephew.

Reggie has weathered storms of unimaginable magnitude, facing heartbreaking setbacks and unfathomable struggles. His world was shattered when his lifelong pillar of strength and love, his mother, who he had lived with his entire life, tragically succumbed to Covid.
Reggie's friends formed RALLY for REGGIE B with unwavering determination in the face of adversity. Swiftly securing an apartment and aiding his relocation before a looming eviction occurred. However, Reggie's severe disability and limited mobility render him unable to work or earn a living. Barely scraping by on meager social security funds, he now faces the harrowing reality of overwhelming rent payments, threatening his stability.

Reggie dreams of a life unburdened by the ceaseless anxiety, uncertainty, and fear he faces each day, a life many of us too often take for granted. Astonishingly, despite his battles, Reggie remains a beacon of unwavering optimism, pouring his heart into lifting others. Through social media, heartfelt phone calls, video chats and unwavering kindness, he brightens the lives of those hurting and is an inspiration to many. He embodies the essence of compassion and gratitude, leaving an indelible mark on all who encounter him.

UPDATE:

As many of you already know, Alan passed away Sunday, October 24, 2021 @ 3:30 AM.

If you are able, please donate as these funds will be used towards funeral/memorial costs, and anything leftover will go towards additional expenses needed by his family as they navigate this immeasurable loss.

********************

We're asking for your support to help Alan Tabb and his family as he was recently diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis also known as ALS and Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Alan has been a dedicated employee of Shelby County Government serving under the Division of Public Works for over 8 years but this disease has not allowed him to work and just this week he was placed on a feeding tube.

You may help in the following ways;

Prayer:

The most important way to help is by storming heaven with prayer. Please pray for healing, for hope, for a joy that surpasses all understanding, for comfort, and for strength. The prayers that have surrounded Alan already have been so evident, and we are so grateful. No matter the circumstances, we find comfort in the knowledge that:

1. God’s love for us all is perfect, His heart is so good.

2. God is in control and is sovereign over our circumstances.

3. God CAN and does heal, even miraculously.

4. Whether or not God’s plan for Alan involves a miraculous bodily healing has no impact on the truth of 1 and 2.

Financially:

With a diagnosis like this comes unexpected costs. Alan and his family are being faced with costs for co-pays, treatment, and medication not covered by insurance, as well as bridging the gap created by reduced hours and time taken off work. It will be 4 months before Long Term Disability will begin for Alan. Assisting financially if you’re able helps relieve some of the burden and stress on the Tabb Family and allows them to focus their strength and energy on Alan’s fight against this debilitating disease.

Foremost, we, his friends and co-workers, ask that you keep Alan and his whole family in prayer, may God’s eternal light and strength keep them and hold them close forever no matter where this journey may take them.

Medical Help For Alan Tabb

On February 11, 2021, our beloved Eric Cheney went peacefully into the arms of Jesus to his eternal home after losing a brutal battle with Covid and diabetes. Eric was one of the most servant-hearted men we have ever known. He served people with such love and kindness. He always loved a good story and always had one to tell. He leaves a big hole in all our hearts but none bigger than that of his love of the last 30 years, Sue.

We ask first for your prayers for Sue as she begins this new phase in her life. Sue has faithfully served alongside Eric at our church and in the community. We love her and want to help support her. These funds will help her move forward with burial, medical, and living expenses over the next few months as she seeks employment and finds her new normal in this life. Anything you can donate will mean so much!

On New Year's Day 2021, we began to grieve the loss of an amazing father, loving husband, faithful son, caring brother, steadfast friend, and hardworking colleague - Chris Harris. He unexpectedly died at the age of 49. We are devastated by the hole this has left in so many lives. Chris' peaceful, gentle strength has touched so many people across the world and now we want to honor his legacy by providing for his son, Nate, currently a high school senior.

This fund has been created to enable Nate to pursue his college goal this coming fall. Any size donation is greatly appreciated.

Our beloved friend and brother, Jeff Arick, passed away tragically and unexpectedly on August 8, 2020. Jeff was a hero serving a Fire Fighter/Paramedic for 17 years with the Memphis Fire Department and working part-time in the emergency room at St. Francis Hospital. Jeff was passionate about life and lived in service to others. This past May, he completed his nursing degree and planned to work at the Regional Medical Center in Memphis this fall. Jeff is survived by his wife Stephanie and his children Mackenzie, Garrett, and Rayven, along with his parents and brother. We are here to help Stephanie meet any immediate needs and provide college funding for Jeff's children.

Lequan’s life was taken by senseless gun violence that occurred in the evening of January 20, 2020 while in the home. He was a very outgoing teen that loved to make others laugh. As a family and community, lets pull together and help the family during their time of need. All proceeds will be given to the mother and father! We want to say thank!

Hello,
As many of you know, Lloyd and I have started the process to adopt internationally through Gladney's Asia program. This is something I have felt called to do since I was 5 years old and about 2 years ago the Lord opened Lloyd's heart to adoption as well. So, now we are on that path. The funds we are raising will be used to help us pay for this adoption as well as the required travel fees we will need when we go pick up our child(children) from their native country! Thank you all for your prayers over this. Prayer is the MOST important part! -Julia, Lloyd, Esther, and Micah

Many people are mourning the loss of Eric Janssen this week. A bright light, @webraw (as Eric was known online) touched the lives of many people from Memphis and beyond. His photography, his laugh, and his friendship brought people together and made them feel at home.

His close friend Tiffany Shea Lemmons said it best. "Many are grieving their loss of Eric in their own unique way... Every relationship is different. Every interaction holds unique qualities that grew from that particular bond."

Eric lived by the motto, "Live a Great Story." You may have known him as a friend, a confidant, a boss, or an internet connection.

Eric leaves behind three very special people who knew him as Dad.

As a final tribute, let's all pitch in and do a little something that will help his kids to Live a Great Story.

On top of the huge emotional hole that has been left, for Jordan (22), Robert (17), and Robin Marie (12), there will also be a financial hole.

Jordan has one year left of college. He landed on a sixth floor roof, the Chicago Tribune reports.

The accident happened at 3:45 p.m. Monday, a Chicago Police spokeswoman told The Commercial Appeal Tuesday.

The 44-year-old Downtown Memphis resident was most recently vice president for audience for the Sandusky Newspaper Group. But the University of Memphis journalism graduate had worked for The Commercial Appeal starting in 2000 as an online content producer and worked his way up to become vice president for digital content.

On Monday, Janssen was with some friends at a rooftop bar and grill, said his former wife, Constance Janssen of Memphis.

"And they were leaving and he said he wanted to get one last picture,'' said Constance, who heard the account from an eyewitness. "He climbed over the rail to get an interesting picture'' when he fell.

In recent years, Janssen had become a photo enthusiast and a self-described "urban explorer,'' posting numerous Instagram photos from inside such places as abandoned Memphis school buildings and atop the roofs of New Orleans and Memphis skyscrapers.

But the accident did not involve such an adventure, Constance Janssen indicated. "He was in a public place,'' she said. "He was eating. They were fixing to leave. He just crawled over the barrier to get a better picture.''

Janssen leaves three children, two daughters, Jordan, 22, and Robin, 12, and a son, Robert, 17.

Constance recalled her ex-husband as among the pioneers in digital content for newspapers. "He realized the importance of the internet,'' she said. "He was one of the people who developed what he did. He drove business to the website of the Sandusky news group.'' Janssen was often asked to speak about his expertise at conferences, she said.

Laura Cochran of New York City was a longtime friend and onetime colleague who helped Janssen start The Commercial Appeal's digital operation in the early 2000s.

"Eric was all about experience in life,'' she said. "He woke up every morning and ran. He ran along the river every morning... That was his way of greeting the day; didn't matter what happened the day before. He always wanted to get a full day in: Hiking, beach time and delicious food...

"He just really wanted to live a great life in every minute he spent living.''

Janssen loved Memphis, which is probably one reason he became an urban explorer a few years ago, she said, adding, "He met different types of people in Memphis through it.''

Janssen was born and raised mostly in Memphis. He graduated from Germantown High, said his sister, Cynthia Vukmer.

"He was passionate about Memphis,'' she said. "...He was passionate in general. He threw himself into things with full vigor.''

Janssen's Instagram account includes numerous photographs taken during his urban explorations. But the cut lines underneath often contained his motivational or philosophical writings -- or even poetry -- instead of a description of the picture.

For example, under a rooftop photo he took of a fellow explorer, Janssen wrote, "Some of the best people I've ever met don't quite fit into any particular category. They blaze their own trail (or climb their own tree in some cases) and don't seem to care whether or not they fit into a nice little preconceived notion.''

Under another photo from behind an unidentified person standing alone on a rooftop, the post asks, "Are you a lone wolf or a pack dog? Do you prefer to spend your free time alone, with your own thoughts, experiencing life on your own terms? Or do you seek out others to share in your experiences and collaborate?...''

Teddy Gorman worked for Janssen between 2007 and 2011 at The Commercial Appeal and remained a friend.

"He rediscovered himself when he discovered his passion for photography,'' Gorman said. "He constantly posted pictures where you see his moniker, "Live a great story.''
