 Born with hydrocephalus, and a number of other challenges, Benji spent his life, with a smile on his face, constantly beating the odds and rewriting medical books. In March of 2025, Benji took a turn where the complex shunting system could no longer function and he began a slow decline that would ultimately end our time with him the morning of Sept 8, 2026.

 Benji was so deeply loved, not only by us, but by the people around the world who followed his story. Benji's life brought joy, and community, to everyone who knew him and had a personality all his own – always cracking jokes and making fart noises, usually while holding or admiring a school bus.

 For 18 years, Benji was at the center of so much love and we are struggling to imagine a world without him.

 My sister, Becky, and her wife, Jo Anna, are people who have always put everyone else before themselves, especially the five amazing kids that they adopted over the years. They are the people that keep going, no matter how difficult things become, and advocate fiercely to ensure that their family is well cared for.

 As a family, we have seen the exhaustion, the tears, the worry that choosing a family like this brings and it has been our privilege to walk this journey with them – surrounding them with love and support to help ease some of the burden they carry.

He was a loving son, father, and friend whose presence left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. From the day he became a student at Texas A&amp;M to the day he passed away, he never missed attending or watching an Aggie football game. He truly lived the Aggie spirit and firmly believed in Aggies helping Aggies.

<div>Beyond Aggieland, Todd was deeply involved in the Eagle River, Alaska hockey community, where he spent two and a half decades building meaningful, long-lasting friendships. He had a place in everyone’s life he touched, and his passing has left a space that can never be filled.

Remembering Todd Blackley, Beloved Aggie and Veteran

<div>For those of you that don’t know, Josh has been extremely ill for the last month. He started experiencing pain in his back in mid June. Then difficulty breathing in late August. After several trips to the hospital, Josh was diagnosed with Metastatic Carcinoma. In layman’s terms, he has cancer and it has spread. After several biopsies, they still can’t determine where the cancer has originated. Therefore, they haven’t been able to begin treatment.

<div>For the time being, Josh’s mom and dad, Randy and Bill, have been by his side during all things medical. April, is continuing to work, and take care of their 2 year old, Hatcher. April is also pregnant with Baby Culbertson #2. When she is not working, she is by Josh’s side.

<div>Ruths medical bills are currently over $4,000,000.00 and we still have months of rehab in front of us. Who knows what it will look like once the case workers and insurance company is done ducking it out. Trust me it's not my priority at the moment.

<div>My focus still remains on getting Mrs Ruth Cusack's health back. She is getting stronger, but still wheelchair bound, and able to say 4-5 words. Ruth continues to rebuild those connections from her brain to tell the rest of her body what to do.

<div>Continued Care: Craig is also recommending a Quality-of-Life rehab facility where they said she would get the help she needs to get back to 100% as quickly as possible. They do not offer this to all of their patients, but they think it would be a great option for Ruth considering how well she is improving and responding to rehab.

<div>The Best News: One of the rehab facilities that CRAIG recommends is within 30 miles of where Ruth grew up and she still has a lot of family very close that would be able to visit and help!

<div>Update from Louis 11/15. Our welcome to the CRAIG way was pretty amazing yesterday. Ruth was fitted with a special wheel chair, she wore her own clothes for the 1st time in 50 days and she aced her speech therapy session.

<div>Update~ 11/9 After seeing Ruth a few nights ago, you just have to hear how well she is doing! She is able to wiggle her toes when she concentrates and looks at her feet! This is literally her brain re learning how to tell her body what to do. When she gets to Craig Neuro rehabilitation Hospital, Ruth will have different therapies working with her and Louis for 8 hours a day. Her choice to work hard and get better, paired with the knowledge of this type of brain injury from the experts at Craig, will advance Ruth’s progress by leaps and bounds! Her final review by Craig/medivac is scheduled for Monday, with Flight to Craig on Tuesday! <div>Ruth Cusack is an amazing outdoorsman, hunter, and all-around fantastic woman who donates an incredible amount of her time to outdoor conservation and the betterment of Alaska’s wildlife resource. Ruth, along with her husband Louis, through their work with SCI Alaska Chapter, helped raise millions of dollars to fund conservation, advocate for hunting rights, instruct outdoor education courses and—as part of SCI’s Warriors On Safari program—provide hunting opportunities for wounded veterans.

<div>On September 27th, less than 48 hours after returning from a remote Alaskan Moose hunt with husband Louis, Ruth suffered a brain aneurysm, collapsed, and was taken to Alaska Regional Medical Center in Anchorage. Ruth is a fighter. She has undergone many procedures, including coiling of the ruptured aneurysm after a subsequent stroke, intubation, drains in her cranium and lumbar, feeding tubes, tracheostomy, and more.

<div>The good news is that, despite these many challenges, Ruth is recovering! She is currently breathing on her own, eating ice chips that are fed to her, doing daily therapy, and recently said her first words since the event. She is recovering from the trauma and surgery, but she is not out of the woods yet!

<div>On November 4th Ruth will undergo another surgery to coil off a second aneurysm. She has been accepted at the Craig Neurorehabilitation Center in Denver, Colorado and she will shortly be transferred, via medevac, to their facility. Louis will accompany her and receive the training necessary to help her recover once they return home.
</div>

</div>
<div>Ruth has medical insurance, but she cannot receive the level of rehabilitation she requires in Alaska. By the time she departs for rehab, she will have already had two major surgeries and spent over 45 days in the ICU at Alaska Regional Hospital. The staff have been great, and they haven’t seen a bill yet, however accounts will need to be settled at some point in the near future. We are asking for your help with expenses that are not covered by insurance. The medivac flight–not covered by insurance–will cost over $50,000, there is also a $10,000 max out of pocket expense, flights for Louis, rental cars, meals, etc., and other costs of care that are not covered by insurance.

<div>Jonny and Jessi Schafer have three children: Lincoln (6), Walter (4), and Jane (9 months). Lincoln and Walter have both been diagnosed with autism. If you have spent any time with Jonny and Jessi, you know how inspirational it is to be around them and see the care and dedication they show towards their children. That being said, the challenges this presents for Jonny and Jessi have been enormous.
</div>

<div>A few years ago, they bought a house in the country to provide the kids a safe opportunity to play outside and be active in a way that helps regulate the more severe symptoms they experience. One being “eloping” which is where they are not very aware of danger and they can wander off easily. This has been very helpful, as this is very positive stimulation for Lincoln and Walter and a way they can spend ample amounts of time outside without Jessi having to try to take the kids to other places alone.
</div>

</div>
<div>When they first moved into the house, there were many updates that had to be made to make it a safe and comfortable environment to fit the many needs of the family. They are still working on getting additional help in the home but as of now, it’s just Jonny and Jessi. The boys are both considered nonverbal, communicating wants, even needs is difficult for them which can make it hard to accomplish even simple day to day responsibilities and tasks for them.
</div>

<div>They have also had to pay up to $500.00 a month for the boy’s nutritional supplements that insurance won’t cover. They have tried going off of the supplements because of how expensive it is, but the boys noticeably regressed without the suppliements. This has also been the case for keeping them on a strict diet which has led to more expensive grocery bills.
</div>

<div>Because of the boys’ high care needs, Jessi is unable to work outside of the home. Jonny works very hard in a manual labor job, but he often has to take time off of work to help care for the boys, as well.
</div>

</div>
<div>All of this has led to a very difficult financial situation for them. They have incurred significant debt to pay for the supplements as well as several house fixes to make their house safe for their boys.
</div>

</div>
<div>The financial situation has become unsustainable, and so Jonny and Jessi have recently made the tough decision to sell their house to help get out of debt. While financially they believe this is the choice they need to make to set their family up for a sustainable financial future, it is a really heartbreaking choice because of how well the house is set up for Lincoln and Walter. It will also require them to rent - likely in an apartment or house - for a period of time to pay off their debt and save for a down payment for a new home.

<div>We would love to see Jonny and Jessi have the community come around them and support them during this challenging time. The sacrifice, service, and love they provide to their boys every single day, now while also raising their new baby girl, is simply incredible. And we want to remind them they are not in this alone.

<div>Hi, My name is Matt Schlottmann. In April 2021, I begin to have some medical issues, thinking it was around nutrition. In July pain became severe enough that I visited the ER and begin the journey of finding out that I have stage 4 signet ring cell colorectal cancer. It is a rare type with only 1-2 percent of colon cancers being this kind. I am hopeful that it can be treated with chemotherapy and surgery.  After several procedures and surgeries, I began chemotherapy on September 8th. I am hopeful that it will be effective in shrinking this tumor. Thank you for your prayers and support.

Help Matt Fight Cancer

<div>So long story short, my family and I are currently displaced at a hotel due to a place that I rented that has very poor installation and I was lied to by the landlord about why it was cold in there. My landlord told me that she had the heat down because it was not rented to anyone there were curtains up and all the windows I couldn't see that the windows were not fueled, and there were holes around all of them. I have a two-year-old and a four-year-old and a 15-year-old. And I just paid $2100 to move into this place and had to pay my other landlord for next month as well and I thought I was moving into a nice charming place for my family. I currently cannot afford to keep paying for a hotel. My landlord has not fixed any of these issues and is not willing to replace the windows, the one upstairs in my daughters room did not even have a latch on it. It had nothing but a padlock and you could just push it open with one finger and see all the way around it outside. I am overwhelmed I'm tired. My children are tired and we are cold. My children's rooms in this house are 50° the living room is about 60°. I cannot have my family live in this place even if I get my money back from this lady right now don't have enough to go somewhere else. I have a good job I can pay monthly rent in another place. I just need the money to move, I feel really awkward and uncomfortable making this post and asking for help but I don't know what else to do. I've gotten a hold of housing. I've gotten a hold of winterization nobody will help. I feel the windows at the house I did everything I could do within my power to make this better and it didn't work. The house is still cold. I'm at a loss
