<div>Hello! We are Marya E. Gates and Robert Daniels, freelance film critics living in Chicago. You may remember that last year our cat Miss Fanny Brawne had a heart attack. The good news is she is doing much better! The bad news is she has ringworm! She has also given me (Marya) ringworm. We are both on meds and should clear up in a few weeks (or maybe months for Miss Fanny), but in order to make sure we do not reinfect each other our entire apartment has to be deep cleaned. Miss Fanny also has to go back for check-ups and tests for the next few months.

<div>This is going to cost $5000 between the doctor and vet visits (roughly ~$2000 all in), the deep cleaning ($1200 for the first time, then we'll need to have her quarantine room cleaned again for about $300) and the laundry (we have to wash every single blanket, article of clothing, or anything else that Miss Fanny or I have touched in the last few weeks and until I am no longer infectious we have to launder all my sheets daily, so we're looking at ~$300 or more there), Robert has to stay in a hotel until we get the place cleaned enough for him to be in the space, and all the other expenses that are adding up. We also have to replace Miss Fanny's beloved cat tree, which cannot be cleaned properly and has to be chucked into the trash.

<div>Robert and I are both freelancers and we have taxes coming up and if you've ever worked freelance, you know that freelance taxes are incredibly high. The cost of all this treatment has wiped out all of the money I (Marya) had saved to pay my taxes. Also, as you might know I (Marya) had to stop working for a few months last year when my Dad passed away, so my  non-tax savings has also taken a hit.

<div>On Tuesday, January 6th, at approximately 3:00 AM, a devastating fire broke out in my father’s apartment in Queens. This home has been the cornerstone of our family for decades—it’s where my father lived and where my sisters and I were raised. It is now completely destroyed.

<div>We have lost absolutely everything. All of our clothing, furniture, and personal possessions—including irreplaceable family photo albums— as well as all remnants of recently lost loved ones…all gone. The loss is immeasurable, both financially and emotionally. Our family is heartbroken and struggling to process this devastating event.

<div>A Father Who Always Gave

<div>My father is the kind of person who has spent his entire life helping others. I have never seen him turn away anyone who needed help or a shoulder to lean on. He consistently goes out of his way for friends, family, and even strangers, never asking for anything in return.

<div>His character and generosity has always been something that I’ve admired and made me the man I am today. It made my sisters into the independent, strong young women they are today. Now, in our darkest hour, we are humbly asking for support to help us.

<div>Early this morning, two of our longtime Cachapas y Más employees, Edgar Coque and Silvia Guevara, lost everything when their apartment caught fire.

<div>The fire started around 3:00 AM in a neighboring unit. Edgar, Silvia, and their two children—ages 7 and 4—were forced to run out immediately, escaping safely with only the clothes they were wearing. While we are incredibly grateful that their family made it out alive and unharmed, they lost everything inside their home: coats, clothes, toys, furniture, cash, cell phones, and irreplaceable memories built over years.

<div>Edgar and Silvia have been an integral part of the Cachapas y Más family for years. Their work ethic, respect for others, attention to detail, and genuine kindness set an example for everyone around them. Our restaurant would not be the same without them—we are better because of who they are, both as teammates and as people. Above all, they are loving, dedicated parents who work tirelessly to provide for their children.

<div>It's with my deepest regret to let you all know Harry, my basset hound, is in need of a serious operation to save his life. He's a loved dog that's known from the Upper West side to Cypress Hills and most notably as a welcoming host at Posteritati.

<div>Very recently I discovered Harry has a growth attached to his spleen that could rupture, more likely as time passes. It's very large but after x-rays and ultrasounds it's looking more benign than malignant so there's a good chance he could not only survive but be cured.

<div>Jeff was diagnosed with a stage 4 glioblastoma in April 2021. For those familiar with this disease, it is an incredibly aggressive form of brain cancer.

<div>He’s been in hospitals and rehabs for much of the past year and a half. Jeff has already shown incredible resolve in fighting this tumor, but his and his family's lives are forever changed, with their day-to-day solely focused on his care. 
</div>

<div> Jeff has been in the hospital since June, and his wife and two young daughters have been working toward the milestone of him coming home. However, when he's finally released from the rehab facility, he will need 24-hour care that insurance won’t fully cover, and his family cannot handle themselves fully. We hope the funds raised here will cover the costs of a full-time home health aid that can allow him to remain safely at home and give Traci, Vivian and Sascha peace of mind. If we meet our fundraising goal, we will also plan to invest this money on Traci's behalf so that she has a cushion when she needs it for future medical costs.
