Every day we greet new and familiar faces from young to old, always aiming to provide great food, fantastic service, and, most importantly, have our customers leave with a smile. Double Rainbow has been a pillar of San Rafael for nearly four decades not only serving our local community, but supporting our nonprofits through all their events.

<div>My name is Forrest Manning. I started working at Double Rainbow in 1993. I was 16, and it was my first real job. Joanne Webster and Charlie Garfink, the original owners, and my fellow employees instilled in me a work ethic and understanding that ALL customers are to be treated like kings and queens (it even says so on the application), and these early years laid the groundwork for what was to come.

<div>There was the running joke that one day I would take over from Joanne and Charlie; it looks like a premonition now. After two years away at college, I came back to Marin, which had become my second home at Double Rainbow. For almost every person who has ever worked at Double Rainbow, it has been their favorite job and a second family.

<div>In 2011 I took over the cafe, cementing my love and dedication to Double Rainbow Cafe, and in turn my deep connection to the community of San Rafael.
</div>

<div>Now, 13 years later, Double Rainbow is on the brink of another significant change after battling the pandemic and rising costs due to inflation. Our business, like so many others, have had significant financial struggles, even while we managed to survive the pandemic. To keep our business viable, we need something to change. Enter Autistry Studios.

<div>Autistry Studios is a remarkable non-profit organization that offers programs for autistic and neurodivergent individuals. Established in 2008 by LMFT Janet Lawson and Daniel Swearingen, the program assists students in successfully transitioning into adulthood with confidence and independence. The studio provides a "maker space," a collaborative workplace led by skilled craftspeople offering therapeutic, educational, and vocational support. Autistry also maintains a retail marketplace and coffee shop at their 4th Street location.

<div>About a year and a half ago, Autistry approached me about collaborating on their vocational program by running their coffee shop. I was extrermely flattered, because they seemed to understand that community and working with youth is so important to me.
</div>
<div>As I deepened into the project, I grew even more grateful to be involved with such an amazing organization of individuals.
</div>

<div>When Double Rainbow had an especially brutal winter in 2023, Janet proposed moving the ice cream shop into their space, it was a perfect fit: a win-win.
</div>

<div>Our final day at the current location is Saturday, August 24th. An ”aloha” party will be held to say goodbye and celebrate the space that has given the Double Rainbow community so much joy and purpose over many years, as well as welcome in the new with a preview of the exciting new space and collaboration.
</div>
<div>The fundraiser's purpose is to continue supporting those who support us. While we submitted our plans for the minor buildout in May, we are still awaiting the county's approval. We estimate a two-month delay in opening the ice cream shop (the cafe will remain open) during some of our busiest months. We want to take care of our employees whose hours will be shortened, pay our insurance, stay current with vendors, and make payments on the lease we had to break to move.

However, thanks to the advancements in research and medications, we've been able to prolong her ability to be with us and cherish precious moments, like seeing my kids' births through their start of elementary school.

<div><strong>On June 20th, 2024 the Alzheimer’s Association celebrates one of their biggest fundraisers </strong>- <strong>The Longest Day© </strong>which is the summer solstice - the day with the most light. The Longest Day participants fight the darkness of Alzheimer's and all other dementia through a fundraising activity of their choice on a day that works for them. And today is the day for our family. <strong>We seek to raise $2000 by 6/20/24 to support The Longest Day. </strong>

<div>I'm beyond grateful to be here today, a stomach cancer survivor, ready to embark on a monumental journey towards making a difference in the lives of those affected by stomach cancer. With your support, we can truly bring about a positive change.

<div>Did you know that stomach cancer receives only a fraction of funding? In fact, according to the National Cancer Institute's 2018 budget, stomach cancer ranked 18th out of 19 categories, with a mere 0.23% dedicated to its research. This staggering statistic propelled me to take action and initiate a campaign that aims to transform the landscape of stomach cancer research forever.

<div>My goal is ambitious but undeniably worthwhile: to raise $10,000 for important stomach cancer research and to help establish an endowment of $1.5 million. This endowment will enable The Centre for Translational Cancer Research to conduct long-term investigations into Hereditary Diffuse Gastric Cancer (HDGC), offering hope and options to patients seeking to live their lives without the grip of stomach cancer.

<div>To help launch this campaign and create much-needed awareness, I have committed myself to an incredible feat—the IRONMAN triathlon. But there's an extraordinary twist: I'll be racing without a stomach, as I underwent a total gastrectomy due to stomach cancer in 2018. An IRONMAN is a grueling endeavor, one that no one, to my knowledge, has successfully accomplished without a stomach. Yet, the significance of this challenge pales in comparison to the struggles faced by those battling stomach cancer every single day.

Remembering Blake Buchbinder: Honoring a Life Cut Short On June 14, 2023, our community suffered a heartbreaking loss when Blake, a vibrant and beloved teenager, was tragically killed in a bicycle accident. In his short time with us, Blake touched the lives of many with his infectious laughter, crazy jokes, kindness, and zest for life and all things sports. As we grieve this unimaginable loss, we come together to support Blake’s family, Darren, Amy and Alexis, in their time of need. The sudden and unexpected nature of this tragedy has placed an immense burden on them and we want to alleviate some of that burden by raising funds to show our support and love. Blake, you’ve brought us so much laughter, smiles, and you’ve always kept us on our toes. Your love for sports is infectious and you are incredible at everything you put your mind to. We’ve loved watching you grow into such a wonderful young man, son, brother, grandson and friend and we will miss you more than we could ever put into words. <div>In 2020 we had a vision for our community... Buy an Ice Cream Truck and use it to pass out hot lunches to the kids and, of course, free ice cream! We were given a great deal on this truck and got it remodeled and ready to go. Each Summer is so much fun taking it out and passing out food and ice cream!

AIM Outreach Ice Cream Truck

<div>Close your eyes. Picture yourself 7,000 miles from your homeland, doing difficult, manual labor in a factory. You’re working to learn the language and someday hope to use your education as a medical professional to serve in the medical field. Right now though, you are manufacturing wire and are at the mercy of expensive and sometimes unreliable ride-sharing services to get to and from work.<br /><br />This is the daily reality for an Afghan family that immigrated to Nebraska in late 2021.<br /><strong><br /></strong>
</div>

<div><strong>The goal of this GoFundMe is to purchase a vehicle for an Afghan refugee family we are helping to sponsor</strong> and to cover the first-year costs of insurance, registration, gas, and associated fees. Any additional funds raised will go directly to the family to use at their discretion.
</div>

<div>We met Z and S (names anonymized, per their request) in March of 2022. We walked into their apartment in Lincoln, holding a hastily purchased house plant to thank them for hosting us, not knowing what to expect. We entered the living room to find a wonderful spread of Afghan food laid out on a tablecloth on the floor. We asked our sons to follow their lead and sat down on the floor, ready to make new friends while experiencing another culture.

<div>In 2021, our family began volunteering with the <a href="https://refugeeempowerment.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Refugee Empowerment Center</a>, where we committed to sponsoring refugees fleeing the Taliban. We didn’t know when that sponsorship would happen or who it would be.
</div>

<div>The N family arrived from Afghanistan in November of 2021. The father was a nurse, the mother a midwife, and two boys of high school age. They fled Afghanistan with a suitcase each, and even those were lost in transit. Our volunteer team immediately provided support with clothing, household goods, and gift cards.
</div>

<div>That night in March, we finally met in person. Over rice, dates, and walnuts, we learned Z and S had found work. They were employed together at a wire manufacturing factory outside of Lincoln. There was no public transportation to the factory, so they had to take Ubers an hour in each direction. Their rides never showed up a few times, and they were warned that they could lose those entry-level jobs if it became a pattern.
</div>

<div><strong>We walked away from that dinner with a mission: the N family needed a car.</strong> They need the independence offered by a driver's license and vehicle. They are learning English to become a part of the community. And to be car-less in suburban Nebraska is the biggest obstacle we could see to their success.

<div>Hi, my name is Megin and I am starting this fund for my mother, Shirley.  As many of you may know I have been managing my mothers care for the past eleven years, and it has been an up and down experience to say the least. It has come to a point where I must reach out and ask for help.  A few years ago my mother had a down-turn from a reaction to one of her medications which has left her in a rehabilitation facility. With no real progress in sight, I have been actively looking for a place with the type of specialized care she needs, and I have found it! I want to see my mother heal back to a stable and healthy life. With your help we can make this happen! Your donations will cover the extended costs we are unable to handle for the next 3 years.

<div>Eleven years ago I moved to Salt Lake City from the East Coast to manage my mothers care after her friends reached out telling me she needed help as her dementia was starting to surface. My mother suffers from dementia &amp; mental illness. She has been in care facilities for the past eight years. Some of these years were positive and she lived independently and could care for all of her needs; which is not the case now. She has suffered a roller coaster ride of side effects from the prescribed medications. Around a year and a half ago she was put on a drug that resulted in her pulling her hair out, this went on for 5 months. During the Covid lock down she contracted Covid. After being cooped up with no activities for months, her roommate’s paranoia increased, and she came after my mother with a butter knife. Her second roommate ended up dying from Covid. All of these events added to my mothers anxiety.

<div>From swelling, to tremors, to isolating, to compulsive behavior, I have seen the gamut of side effects from the various drugs. She is in fact the 1% that ends up with the very obscure side effects. When she finally seemed stable, the team of mental health practitioners decided to stop prescribing one of her medications which eventually left my mother in a state of anxiety and paranoia. 
</div>

<div>During her recovery from Covid she fell four times. I was not permitted to see her in person, so through face time I was able to see the damage the fourth fall caused.  She broke her nose and knocked out four teeth from her bridge. There have been too many negative life altering experiences that have taken place in her current facility. I understand care providers do the best they can do. Now it is time for a new chapter,  a different road for my mother to heal, and the opportunity to work with a team and a facility where her care and medications will not be administered as a factory produced one size fits all. I have found a facility that has one of the best psychiatric team of doctors in Salt Lake City. She would have her own room and live just two blocks from me. So, I am asking for help with the expenses that are over and above what our family can handle financially at this point in the journey. With your help your funds will cover the extra cost needed for the next 3 years. At that point we have been assured that the new choice waiver program will become available to her and her care will be completely covered. Your prayers and help are much appreciated!
