Child Killed - System Fails Survivor - MAM is the Only Hope

Your generous donations will make a meaningful difference in a crisis case: Two days ago at 3:39 a.m., we received a heartbreaking text from our client Maria (pseudonym to protect privacy,) a survivor of murder. Just nine minutes after her car was repossessed. Exhausted, grieving, and overwhelmed, Maria reached out to her Victim Advocate because she has no one else to turn. Maria’s beloved child, a 17-year-old was murdered in May of this year. Since then, her life has been shattered. She missed two months of work due to the trauma and physical toll of her loss, and though she has since returned to her janitorial job, she is barely catching up. Living below the poverty line, every dollar goes to survival. Now, without a car, she risks losing even that fragile stability. Maria tried to get help through the system that is supposed to be there for crime victims. But instead of support, she has been failed again and again: The Alameda County District Attorney Victim Assistance Program wrongly told her she did not qualify for wage loss. The law allows up to 30 days of wage loss in this case. With help at Mothers Against Murder (MAM), Maria filed directly with the California Victim Compensation Board (CalVCB). Her emergency application was unlawfully auto-denied without even being reviewed. No reason was given. To cover up this mistake, CalVCB executives and legal staff are now demanding tax filings that are not required by law, when they already have everything they need: her employer’s verification and proof of timecards for the month she was unable to work. Maria works for a county government office, so proof of income loss is as solid as can be. If CalVCB had done its job, Maria would not have lost her car. That car was her lifeline!! Now, we are turning to the community to stand with MAM to help Maria. She should not have to go through this alone.
