Eight years ago, Veronica Sandiford was diagnosed with breast cancer. She fought bravely, but cancer recently returned to her jaw and liver, precipitating a shockingly swift decline. Veronica passed away this week.  She leaves her husband Harry and her two beautiful children Max and Tess alone and unprepared for the near and far future. For them, it is a loss that is swift and total; she was at the helm of her family and brought her optimism and love of life to everyone and everything she encountered. Harry and the kids are devastated. Becoming a single parent overnight has been overwhelming for Harry. We hope to ease some of the burden brought on by this difficult moment so that they can focus on taking care of one another. We are also starting a GiveInKind to help the family with food and childcare, but the family is going to need substantial financial assistance. It’s hard to ask for help. Helping Veronica's Family

During the month of May, Jim was not feeling quite himself, and his doctor ordered blood work. On May 23, Jim received a call that his potassium levels were dangerously low, and he should make his way to the ER immediately. Jim was admitted that evening, and since he had not had much of an appetite for a couple weeks, an endoscopy was performed on May 25. The GI doctor biopsied Jim's stomach and told Jim and Mary he was 'very concerned' with what he saw. Given it was Memorial Day weekend, results would take several days to return. Jim went home on Sunday, May 27, knowing he and Mary just had to wait for the results. On Tuesday, May 29, Jim was back in the ER. His legs were cramping, and he felt very tired. Low potassium was the culprit again. And Jim was admitted....again. Finally, on Thursday, May 31, the pathology returned, and cancer of the stomach was confirmed. Jim was released from the hospital on Friday morning. Mary was on the phone with Sloan Kettering throughout the day. They would have to wait until early the following week to hear confirmation of an appointment. On Monday, June 4, Jim really was not feeling well. Eating continued to be a challenge, and he was growing weaker. Mary took him back to the hospital and he was admitted....again. Early Tuesday morning, Sloan Kettering called with an appointment for the upcoming Friday. Yaay! Finally some good news! But Jim had had a rough night, and he continued to decline. Tuesday afternoon, Jim was transported to Vassar Hospital, and there, Jim and Mary received devastating news: Stage 4, diffuse gastric cancer with carcinomatosis to the abdomen. The cancer in Jim's stomach had spread into his abdomen and around his intestines. Absolutely devastating news. Mary and Jim are the best people I know. They give of themselves continuously to anyone in need or any cause - big or small. 'No' is a word they rarely say, and they never ask for anything in return. Now, they really need our help. Jim, Mary, and their four children are facing a frightening diagnosis and are in the midst of a very tough battle. Uncovered medical expenses, regular bills, and daily needs all are looming. Jim is unable to work. And Mary's focus is on Jim and their children, which is exactly where it needs to be. The support and concern of the community have been overwhelming. Mary and Jim are so very moved and appreciative. Many people have asked how they can help. Along with love and prayers, financial support is the best way to help the Hares right now. 42 year old mom Bobbi Jo Forte has been rescuing animals for 20 years. Ten of those years were spent saving dogs from the kill list at shelters in the Southwest. Nine years ago she turned her attention to feral cats and kittens when she became a mom. She even converted her small garage into a shelter which could house special needs or injured cats/kittens until they were adopted. <img class="not-resizable" src="https://2dbdd5116ffa30a49aa8-c03f075f8191fb4e60e74b907071aee8.ssl.cf1.rackcdn.com/5995843_1442162404.4796_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" /> Saving animals was part of daily life. Even her daughter loved to go with her when an urgent call came for an orphaned kitten or stray mom that was pregnant or had just given birth. <img class="not-resizable" src="https://2dbdd5116ffa30a49aa8-c03f075f8191fb4e60e74b907071aee8.ssl.cf1.rackcdn.com/5995843_1442162441.9541_funddescription.jpeg" alt="" width="100%" /> Day or night it didn't matter, she took the calls and gave each animal hope. She provided everything necessary for a comfortable life and found them all forever homes through adoption events. Bottle feeding, medicating, or just bringing kittens back from the brink of starvation was all part of daily life. <img class="not-resizable" src="https://2dbdd5116ffa30a49aa8-c03f075f8191fb4e60e74b907071aee8.ssl.cf1.rackcdn.com/5995843_1442162487.26_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" /> In September of 2014 everything changed. First, her daughter was stricken with weeks of high fever and severe headaches. Weeks later Bobbi Jo went to the hospital with a 104.5 fever. Stricken with encephalitis (brain swelling) she was forced to hault rescue efforts for the first time in 20 years. Exhaustion, balance problems, difficulty with speech, vision problems, hearing loss, and trouble sleeping followed. Stopping rescue was devastating - and necessary. Fearing the worst she went to a Neurologist who ordered an immediate MRI. In June of 2015 Bobbi Jo was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor. Treatment was necessary before the tumor grew any larger. On August 10th she received radiation at NY Presbyterian Hospital in NYC. Her once active life has changed completely. Plagued with balance issues, exhaustion, headaches, and other physical problems she is asking for help for the first time in her life. Bobbi Jo dreams of returning to animal rescue someday and knows in order to do that she must first take time to heal and hope that the brain tumor treatment works. Medical bills and debt are adding up. Please help reach our goal. "Thank you for helping my mom and us."- Morgan Forte 9/18/2015- Sometimes I try and compare my situation to people who have it worse, specifically people who have cancer because I feel like that is the ultimate fear of most people.  A friend recently said "you don't have to have cancer for your life to be completely altered and scary". It's so true. This is such a scary, confusing, upredictable diagnosis and treatment since everyone responds differently. I can't put into words how frustrating it is to be told HOW I will feel, only to NOT feel that way at all and then have totally sporadic and excruciating symptoms. My entire life has been completely altered by this. I am not able to get up and do the things I did. I was a runner for 26 years. I can't run in a straight line and my head feels terrible if I try. Walking around at night is a complete struggle. My eyes are shockingly sensitive to light and dark. The idiopathic pain in my abdomen and neck bring me to my knees and is triggered by sunlight, eating, and sometimes just leaning over. My heart goes out to anyone struggling with this rare diagnosis.  9/20/2015- I am completely moved by the response. This money has helped tremendously! Paying off these bills brings peace of mind. Thank you to everyone who has helped us. 9/22/2015- Mentally preparing myself for the coming weeks. MRI to test for "brain root lesions" and Overnight EEG to test for "Partial Complex Seizures" which might explain the excruciating abdominal pain. My Neuro Surgeon's nurse said she has never had a patient who had Viral Meningitis then Vestibular Schwanoma treatment. It complicates my situation and I can only hope that my symptoms do not worsen.

Animal Rescuer/Mom/Rare Brain Tumor

Hi folks. I've been unemployed for over a year and fell behind on my rent. My landlord has served me with an eviction notice. I've lived here for almost 20 years. I have faith that I will find work soon. I've been successful as a comic book editor, event planner, facility manager and synagogue executive director. I feel that I'm just dealing with a bad economy and bad luck and just need a little more time. I'm homestly scared of losing my home and giving up my dear cats, Buffy and Angel.
